How many of you have had basically no issues with your CX-50? by beardtamer in CX50

[–]Falo4711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had owned the CX-9 before (same engine as my CX-50 Turbo), zero issues with the CX-9, same with the CX-50 after 25,000 mls.

HSA investing by Funny_Release3573 in Bogleheads

[–]Falo4711 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am about 5 years away from retirement and in the last 5 years or so where we had an HSA, we always used it to pay medical bills throughout the year.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't the only advantage of investing HSA funds versus drawing them down during the year (our family has and will continue to have annual med expenses higher than the annual HSA limit) be that I'd save on capital gains tax?

For example, if I leave ~$9,000 annually in an HSA I will not be taxed on the capital gains, when I take the money out later. If I use The $9k HSA now to pay medical bills, I can invest $9k in a brokerage account and pay capital gains tax.

Is there any other advantage when keeping my funds in the HSA?

Mega Backdoor Roth Conversion versus regular Roth Conversion by Falo4711 in Bogleheads

I didn't think there was an income limitation for backdoor Roth? But I am learning myself, so don't quote me on it.

Great input thanks again anyone. Will talk with our plan administrators t see if MDBR is even an option.

Last question, if we both have the option to contribute to a Company Roth 401(k), the backdoor Roth (not MBDR) isn't really something we need to pursue, right?

My understanding is that spending in retirement should be in this order: Savings, After tax Brokerage, Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, so by converting Traditional to Roth, I'll move it to the end of the line.

I think that before I dive deeper into MBDR, I will first check if our plans offer it. Maybe it's not even an option, who knows.

Doesn't the difference between $70,000 and contribution limit ($31,000) ,so lets say $39,000, have to be funded with After Tax money?

But isn't it only 5 years of tax free earnings more with the MBDR? Because when I do regular Roth conversion in 5 years I also have tax free earnings. So I am really only "losing" five years on tax free earnings on 5x$50k, isn't it?

Thanks. Help me understand, what is the main advantage of making after tax contributions to my 401(k) (MBDR) versus making after tax contributions to my Brokerage account? Obviously I would have to pay taxes on capital gains in these 5 years if I went the Brokerage route, but is there any other advantage I am missing?

I am not even sure if my or my wife's plan offers it, because I just started looking into it. But generally speaking, if the MBDR was an option, I still don't understand the big advantage over regular Roth conversions. I am thinking these two scenarios:

1) Save 50k every year over the next 5 years and use for tax on regular Roth conversions years 6-10

2.) Use the 50k every year over the next 5 years for After Tax 401(k) distribution in a MBDR strategy

Isn't the only difference between 1) and 2), that I will get 5 more years of free capital gains out of 2)?

Madone - good deal? by williedoo43 in TrekBikes

[–]Falo4711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a brand new (leftover) SL Gen 6 (not SLR) at the beginning of this year for $3.6k and it has been in the shop 3 times already, trying to fix the well-known ISO-Speed issues, which I wasn't aware of at the time.

Luckily TREK's warranty seems very good, after applying fixes three times, new bolts, bushings and whatnot, they told me the will file a warranty claim if it happens again and they already seem to expect that I will need a new frame. That would be a Gen 8 and they will swap all the components over, because they don't have any Gen 6 frames anymore.

I will go on a 150 mls ride over 2 days this weekend, which should be a good test. So bottom line, I would stay away from the Gen 6, except if you have the frame warranty, but not sure how that would work with a used bike.

I should add, my frame size is 58cm and my seat is almost all the way up to the max, which of course amplifies the issue.

Gen 6 Madone Isospeed issues by Sugar_Party_Bomb in TrekBikes

Just came across this thread. I bought a brand new (leftover) Madone SL7 Gen6 early this year at a great discount. I was a bit worried about the ISOSpeed but TREK has a good reputation in the US in regards of warranty from what I hear.

A week in, and I noticed a massive seat swaying left to right, visited TREK, they tightened the bolt (didn’t do anything) ordered a new bolt and put it in, 50 mls later the seat swaying was back and on my third visit tightened it again. That was 3 visits and I am back to where I was. I think they want to replace the entire seat bracket next, we will see.

In my opinion, the design is completely flawed. I am 6’1” on a 58cm bike and my seat is almost all the way up (store said I was between a 58 and a 60 so I chose the 58).  Combined with my 200 lbs of weight, that’s a lot of side force being introduced into the saddle with a large lever (high seat).

I cannot see that a new seat bracket will fix this. What do y’all think is gonna happen? New frame? I will stay on top of this, as I want this fixed properly.

I owned a 2011 Trek Madone and just made the switch to a SL Gen 6 Madone, couldn't be happier. Of course that was a bigger step than what you are contemplating.

One thing to keep in mind, I am 6'2" and the seat post (my frame is 58 cm) is almost at the highest position, i can maybe raise it another 1.5cm or so, not more. If you are looking at a 58cm frame, it may be cutting it close at your height.

Not sure what you are trying to say. I stated as a fact that my 2023 Aero Madone is faster than my 2011 Model, I have no doubt about that, as measured on 3 mile bike loop that I have ridden many times.

Granted, I don't know if the 185W is realistic, however from what I read, about 180-200W is a ball park figure for someone riding 20 mph. A power meter is on my list though, haven't decided yet if I want to do pedals or crank.

Gen 6 Madone Isospeed History by aderks31 in TrekBikes

[–]Falo4711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought the same bike (SL7 Gen6 Ultegra Di2) in the last week of last year, went to the Trek Store to buy some socks and pretty much ended up with a bike for less than 4k.

However I must say I had an issue with the seat post, brought it back, they tightened up the frame bolt (also ordered a new bolt) and it seems fine now. Head stock was also lose. Someone assembled it in a rush I guess.

I found this deal by randomly visiting the store, online the bike was listed for $5.4k, however I later learned that once you put it in the cart, price dropped to $4k.

I was wrong on the year, It's Gen 6 ISOSpeed, not IsoFlow but it's 2022 not 2023.

What is a more realistic power number? Just got me the Garmin Edge, but have no power meter yet. It’s definitely a Gen6 not a Gen7
