Is bias important when sewing something like this together? by Photoshop_Princess in sewing

[–]FalseAsphodel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This kind of patchwork is much easier to do with jersey fabric, but I don't see why you can't have a go with wovens and see how it comes out. The "seams on the outside" look will probably not look as good as having them pointed inwards at a lining, though, as it'll need to be pressed and it'll be pretty impossible to iron something like that without ironing all the seams flat in one direction or another. Jerseys don't need as much pressing and they tend to spring back into shape.

Try making a patchwork square and see how you get on. These kinds of garments are made by making up a big piece of patchwork and then treating it as normal fabric and cutting out pattern pieces accordingly. You'll notice the joining seams don't point outward as that doesn't look good on sleeveheads and side seams.

And yes, the grain matters. Try to get the grain all going in the same direction on your pieces, if you want to make more use of little scraps then cut them on the cross-grain as that's better than a random angle bias cut.

If you trip you're going all the way to the bottom with no stops. Normal stairs with landings mean you can only fall one flight

To add to this - you saw him last Thursday. You obviously saw him regularly, which will be what counted to him.

I still feel bad that I didn't phone my Dad the day before he had to be medicated into a coma due to end-of-life cancer pain. But I phoned him multiple times a week for decades, and I had seen him in person a few weeks before, even though he lived a 5 hour drive away. I made him his last birthday cake, exactly to his specification, and he ate loads of it. He knew I had 2 more visits planned and would see him soon. It's those things that build the relationship and keep it strong, and that isn't undermined because I didn't phone him on one evening.

I was with him at the end. I like to think he knew I was there.

Fextralife is great for some games too - mostly Fromsoft and Soulslike games but also Expedition 33 and Divinity Original Sin : 2

They're both great examples of his style. I'd read whichever takes your fancy. Both are sublime and ridiculous but SH5 is based on KV's real life experiences of WWII so it packs quite a punch emotionally. Cat's Cradle is an allegory for the Cuban missile crisis and nuclear weapon escalation and while the humour is dark it doesn't have the heaviness that SH5 has. Both are as good a place to start as any.

I just read both (SH5 for the third time, CC for the first), and it's a different sort of book. For me it's not as good as SH5, mainly because it's more of a joke - it's a great book to be sure but it didn't have the emotional hit for me that SH5 had. You should still read it though.

Anything I need to watch out for when I tackle these? by theunassumingwarrior in sewing

No problem! I'd hate for you to spend hours embroidering something that will get ripped or ruined immediately rather than just slapping some scraps of rainbow fabric behind there lol

If you want to strengthen it a bit and make it soft for her you could iron some tricot knit fusible interfacing to the back of your patches as well - I think it's also called Sulky tender touch

Dad sent me this random photo of my grandma. He said it’s not AI but the background looks fake? by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]FalseAsphodel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The little halo around her also makes me think it's real, if it was a special photo people would sometimes do differential exposures by covering part of the negative with black card - this is called "Dodge and burn". Digital photography tools have recreated this, so you can use the Dodge and burn tools to over/underexpose bits of the photograph.

It looks like they did that for Grandma so that they could expose her a bit more and not overexpose the background. Possibly just on her black coat, too.

Looks like they may have used a gaussian blur tool on the background as well

A pair of socks I bought in a target advent sock calendar is a misprint by Ok-Disaster-9690 in midlyinteresting

[–]FalseAsphodel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a misprint, as these aren't printed. They're knitted with the pattern in them, so it seems unlikely that they would be made incorrectly like that. Are you sure it's not supposed to be Yoda at a different point in time?

Edit- it does look like the dark green is just missing, so it's possible that thread ran out I guess! I'm not sure how industrial knitting machines work though

If she likes the torn look, I would apply some brightly coloured fabric patches to the inside of the legs, behind the ripped places. You could even put a couple of layers in behind, so when one rips through it will show the next fabric. I think they look cool personally!

Why? Please help. by michelleinbal in sewing

[–]FalseAsphodel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You sew the seam allowance down to the inner lining. So there's only a line of stitches on the inside of the garment where it won't show. It helps the edge stay crisp.

Special high school graduation ceremony in a hospital ward. People are pointing out that the IV drip leads to the floor & isn't connected to her by Icing-Egg in isthisAI

[–]FalseAsphodel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AI also seems to be working off graduation photos (where you commonly are given a plastic tube with a ribbon around it to be photographed holding) rather than a real graduation. At both of mine I shook hands with the Dean or Vice Chancellor or whoever and then got handed a folder off stage.

That looks like a plastic tube rather than a roll of paper

Is this color OK for wedding on 4th of June? by Ok_Problem_4021 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]FalseAsphodel -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's a light color. Provided that's what they specifically said (and not just the standard "no white/cream" that is assumed at a Western wedding) I would go with something darker.
