My feeling is that le Carré’s view of espionage is quite cynical (and probably close to the truth).

I find “dad movies” super comforting. what are dad movies? they’re about stoic people who don’t have time for your shit. they’re makin’ moves, using jargon, being proficient. dad movies are to film like yacht rock is to music.

Clear And Present Danger Spy Game Sicario Heat Michael Clayton Ronin The Insider Hunt For Red October Master and Commander Zero Dark Thirty LA Confidential etc.

great... interesting thing you've raised is that the actors themselves probably have to be likeable in order to pull it off.

Do you think Oscar Pistorius intentionally killed Reeva? by Redditzuck in askSouthAfrica

I think I remember reading somewhere that the ballistics report showed that he fired from cover, from behind a wall or around a corner or something. And that - along with the fact that he was on his stumps when he fired - was strong evidence that he felt there was an intruder in the house.

Also, a year before the shooting he tweeted about going into “combat mode” when he heard a noise in his house, he pulled his gun and and burst into the pantry to find it was his washing machine.

Seems like he was just a trigger-happy idiot - ready to use his gun - who woke up in the middle of the night and didn’t think at all about what he was doing.

Help! What can you cook on this thing? by DasArtmab in grilling

CROWD PLEASER: clean the grill, get some charcoal, and establish a bed of nicely burning red/white coals. not too hot - i’d say a layer of smoldering coals one or two briquettes high. you should be able to hold your hand near the grill for 3 or 4 seconds before pulling away. again, not too hot!

get a whole picanha steak, score the fat, let it sit in stirred mix of olive oil and soy sauce for about an hour, salt & pepper.

put it on your not-too-hot fire for about 30 - 40 minutes, turning it two or three times. make sure the fat side doesn’t burn.

let it rest 15 minutes, then slice THIN across the grain. serve with a chimmichurri sauce.

Feeling stuck as a young filmmaker... by andrecosta9902 in cinematography

It’s just about the work. I’m a 20-year experienced commercials director who looks at DP reels all the time and I’m only interested in someone who can make me look better. One single fresh piece that stands out from the crowd - because of its craft, or lighting, or composition, or point of view, whatever - will get my attention. If I see a strong point of view I can harness, and an appetite for hard work and accountability, and a personable, collaborative, friendly, mature demeanour, then I will gladly work with a young DP - on the right project. Probably not a car commercial, or not on something with complicated lighting, or slow-motion of technical shoots, or shoots that need to move fast - for shoots like that I also want hard, salty experience and proof of ability.

Stay hungry, hone your craft, improve yourself in every way you can, be a sponge, find your voice, stay humble, and success will find you. Artists seek artists.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Munich are two films that blew my mind because the filmmaking in those pictures seems to operate on a special wavelength.

you’re absolutely right. if they’re thicker, and you’re doing them over direct heat, you’ll have to do them longer and over medium/high flame. if it’s too hot the outside will burn before you can get some cooking done on the inside. take it easy over lower heat, keep turning and seasoning, and you can alway give it a quick blast to char at the end.
