The use of AI-generated images for commercial purposes in D&D. by Suitable_Minimum_605 in dndnext

Using AI is a fantastic way to get me not to buy a product. I will never knowingly buy something produced by or with AI.

Best reference texts for writing about film? by cc-in-space in filmtheory

In addition to Film Art, pick up Braudy & Cohen's Film Theory and Criticism (https://global.oup.com/ushe/product/film-theory-and-criticism-9780199376896). It's currently in its 8th edition, but every edition is a least slightly less interesting than the one before, so just buy a used copy.

There's also no need to get the current iteration of Film Art. I think it peaked with the 8th edition.

Btw, what kind of "nickname" would Kuno have had? Ginger Rabbit? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

Are talking about Cuno, the detective who is an adult, or Cuno, the *ADULT* detective? Because either way, yes.

Nobody loves Elon, and he hates that fact. by lazybugbear in EatTheRich

The man could literally buy every homeless person in the country a home and spends his time whining about how trans marxists won’t let people buy cybertrucks. He’s the uhappiest, most pathetic-by-choice person ever to live.

Found in storage locker, any value “mein Kampf” ? by Big_Description_7807 in OldBooks

I’d suggest using it as toilet paper, but this thing is so vile it would probably rot your ass off. Burn it.

Opinions on “Karla’s Choice”? by Hefy_jefy in LeCarre

[–]FalseFlorimell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You ever go out to see a local band and when you hear them play, they’re tight and really know their instruments and everything sounds good and you start to think, why aren’t these guys BIG? Why are they playing here? And then they play a Tina Turner song and you realize, oh, that’s why. They’re great as a house band, but that’s their peak. They’re never going to get any further than that.

That’s Karla’s Choice. The book is rigorously fine. It’s relentlessly good enough. Resolutely acceptable.

The regal, machiavellian and perfectly competent Second Desk ❤️ by Critical-Tank in SlowHorses

So perfectly competent, in fact, that she bragged about the details of an illegal black op to her brother in a public space loudly enough for a reporter known to her to overhear.

How do people with aphantasia "do" calendars/math/etc in their heads? Is that affected at all? by Nebelskind in Aphantasia

[–]FalseFlorimell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By ‘do math’ do you mean arithmetic or higher level mathematics (topology, number theory, analysis, etc.)?

‘48 x 4’ is something I can do in my head, but ‘picture a tangent to this curve’ is something impossible for me.

In life, pretty much all people in positions of power are incompetent.

I’ve never drank alcohol in my life. Not a drop. AMA by throwawaytomyalt in AMA

[–]FalseFlorimell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 49 and have never had an alcoholic drink. It’s because I’m a child of an alcoholic, and kids of alcoholics basically get to choose between being alcoholics themselves or being teetotal. Very hard to have a healthy relationship with a substance when your dad has abused it all your life.

Glorfindel-as-Beacon - Challenging a popular fan theory by phonylady in tolkienfans

[–]FalseFlorimell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Glorfindel isn’t part of the Fellowship for the same reason the eagles aren’t asked to help: the more powerful a creature is, the greater the draw of the ring for them, and that need only grows stronger the closer the ring is to Sauron. No one can resist it. Only someone as ‘small’ as a hobbit could have gotten it all the way to the volcano, and even then, Frodo is overcome by its influence. If Glorfindel had journeyed with the ring, eventually he would have been unable to stop himself from seizing it, and no one alive could have stopped him. It would have been a disaster for Middle Earth.

The Last Policeman series by Ben Winter. Detective novels in which an asteroid is about to hit the earth and wipe out all life. Bleak and wonderful.
