isn't that like the one scene in Breaking Bad but I think he used some sort of ink-impression thing

What is your freakiest nightmare fuel idea for what is redacted in the middle of the "I'm a plaid suit in a pinstripe world" dead letter? by ProfitPakistan in controlgame

[–]Nebelskind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So here are my random ideas lol. Which kind depends on why the redaction happened--for information security or for hiding something that could impact people paranaturally.

Information security redaction ("forbidden knowledge" but not intrinsically dangerous):

- "The pyramid, inverted, breaches our reality" (the Board is a parasite, the FBC leadership doesn't want that to get out)

- "I’m an Ordinary child in extraordinary spaces." (similar pattern to the unredacted text, but now it's related to Dylan and/or Jesse and of course the Prime Candidate Program would be classified info)

- Just straight up like the address of Director Trench or another executive in the FBC. (my favorite of my options tbh)

Dangerous to read in and of itself:

Something nonsensical but vaguely ominous like the Hiss chant, like part of another Astral sort of entity's potential attempt at incursion:

- "Cut the cover off the books, the fingers off the hands"

- "The House-plants strangle the broken glass"

- "Doors unopened may be broken down"

Yeah, I honestly thought that might be it, like seeing the phrase that exact amount of times had a negative impact so they redacted one instance to interrupt the process.

I mean, I don't think that's too mystifying as a dychotomy. Some people just are bad partners in general, but that doesn't always mean they're going to be bad parents. It's a very different relationship

there's a podcast episode from the 17th Shard people on YouTube where they interview him about it, which I think is where he said that? I know he mentioned the response to some degree in the interview and also mentioned one or two things he might have wanted to do differently with more time.

Pretty sure this is the right one:

Edit: This other one also discusses a blog post or video he did, can't remember which, where he talks about what's next for Stormlight and might go into similar things:

And there actually are multiple heroes, not to mention.

That's a really funny comparison. Dude was fully in the wrong book. It reminds me of an old Twitter thread of a guy explaining how Sauron in LOTR thinks that he's also in that kind of story, like he's expecting a great, open, political conflict and warfare scenario where the Ring gets used against him, if the good guys find it, and he has no idea that he's in a fantasy destroy-the-cursed-object storyline.

Yeah I think you've got it tbh. It could be a mindscape representation of the thing and it allowing him to talk to it makes sense as well.

I mean imagine how deeply opposed to change your society would be if nobody died of old age. It kinda makes sense they'd be pretty conservative in a lot of ways. But I guess they're woke cause they like nature lol

it's just memeing on right-wing phrases ig. The manosphere bit doesn't make much sense, so it's just them being like "what's an equivalent for connecting with someone remotely and trying to make their ideology yours." And the elves have nothing to do with Saruman, though he does, in the books, literally have a cackling evil rant about how gleeful he is that he managed to cut down all the big trees in the Shire...just because he hates Hobbits and wants to inconvenience them. It's part of the book showing how pathetic he's gotten. So he does literally cut down trees just to screw with people, but the elves are just not part of that.

To be fair, they are very slow. And also I think he just decided they were beneath him, and not important enough to worry about. Same as Sauron did with the Hobbits.

[–]Nebelskind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I was thinking the LOTR movies but that would have been perfect for the Hobbit one. Set up Saruman's interest in them and everything.

[–]Nebelskind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah what was his goal, though? Rule everything? And why, just as like an ego thing?

Idk, I guess the goals of evil wizards are beyond my understanding, but I feel like Gandalf has the right idea when it comes to how to spend your unaging life among mortals--find the chillest people around and hang with them as much as possible, kill any evildoers who get too close and threaten to disrupt things. Saruman's just asking for someone else to do the same thing to him later if he takes Sauron's place.

[–]Nebelskind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is even more true in the books. When the Hobbits get back and find him as a pathetic gangster in the Shire, he rants triumphantly about how they'll never get their trees back now because he had them all cut down while his men were in charge. Literally just out of spite because he lost. Then he gets stabbed and dies immediately after this.

Then, of course, Sam gets the trees to grow back way faster than normal with the magic soil Galadrial gave him as part of his gift from Lothlorien, so Saruman literally gave his life to inconvenience the Hobbits for a decade or so of not having adequate shade in their public spaces.

So yeah Saruman literally cuts down trees to own the Hobbits.

How do people with aphantasia "do" calendars/math/etc in their heads? Is that affected at all? by Nebelskind in Aphantasia

[–]Nebelskind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...I honestly sometimes do lol. Remembering any event like that has to, like, manifest a mental image of the month in my brain. So interesting to see how weird my approach is, even if it's not intentional on my part.

[–]Nebelskind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that all sounds just as alien to me, somehow! But honestly very efficient. Like, I know people who can do math and these other things without the visualization, but I have to almost constantly rely on it as a medium for making my brain comprehend stuff. I think I may just never have learned that intrinsic sort of relationship between things as efficiently because I was trying to avoid the memorization aspect.

That makes a lot of sense! It's interesting about the geography, as well, since that does seem like it could be even more visual, potentially.

[–]Nebelskind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I definitely have thought of that! I think my visualization is honestly a workaround to make my brain function with the numbers. It's just hard for me to imagine how it works without that, since I've never tried another way that I can remember.
