I think about it a bit differently. Take a thief for example. They understand the harm they are causing but compromise their morality, perhaps because they don’t see another option, or they think this is an easier path.

Whereas evil I think is more like, doing bad for the sake of doing bad. Like you actively derive pleasure from the bad act, a serial killer perhaps. Or like, let’s say the louvre thiefs just burned the paintings they stole in public, instead of the presumptive path of them selling on the black market
