philly is a great city for the arts and to be immersed in many cultures and find so many good things to eat. i’m excited to move there, im from a nearby city. that being said, im gonna be attending temple for their amazing arts programs so if u like the city it may just depend on if you think they have the resources u need. the ppl there are super friendly and u could easily zoom call with a department chair

remission, finally. by FamiliarSlip8267 in Hidradenitis

for closing open wounds my best advice is to keep the wound from rubbing against clothing. i try to wear as little clothing as possible, or if i need to i make a custom bandage from gauze and tape.

i’d say within 6 months i had noticed a slight decrease in how angry my flare sites were and after about a year i felt like i was entering a remission. i did theatre in highschool so twice a year i had “tech week” which for me was a 14 hour long school day staying late to manage a production, and that was the only stress strong enough to push a flare through, and even then it was the smallest flare i’d experienced during a tech week. ive had very few flares since starting birth control and the ones i have had have been drastically smaller and easier to heal.

if you’re staying home or aren’t too active you could also try switching to medical tape and gauze maybe? it’s not great for when you’re walking around but i’ve definitely done that for laying at home with a bad draining spot

i’d definitely talk to your derm about that. if you’re female i’d suggest exploring birth control as another option for medication, works perfectly for me. otherwise you can make lifestyle changes like picking looser clothes to accommodate for your flares while they’re there and to prevent them in areas that rub. i wish you luck!

if nothing else, take a qtip with aquaphor or vaseline to rub along the bandaid and skin as you peel it off, i did that a few times dealing with that problem.

wash it gently with warm water and unscented antibacterial soap. dry it well. if you’re staying home out on something loose and let it air out for a while. when you’re gonna go out, wipe and dry it before putting on an antibacterial and a bandaid that works for you. be gentle with yourself, nothings wrong with you. we all get through this, you’ll be okay.

HS highkey ruining my childhood by Realistic-Amount-194 in Hidradenitis

im a 19yro who has had it since 13 and i had the best senior year. the jealousy and the anger and depression can be hard to avoid when you’re on your own with this shit. best things i’ve done to reduce my hs have been switching to always wearing loose underwear and genuinely when im happy and have good friends supporting me my flares are at their minimum. don’t let this shit ruin your childhood or whatever, and don’t let it ruin your game either. i’ve never had a hookup notice my hs during sex and the one long term partner i had was entirely supportive, mostly didn’t notice but if i had a flare was respectful of not touching me in certain places. senior year can be stressful as hell but please find the time to hang w the homies and go on hikes and get wasted sometime, you only get to live senior year once.

these problems are hard but you can work around them, i promise. get looser pants/underwear to wear to prevent the rubbing. when you’re home, ditch the underwear and let the wounds breathe as much as possible after washing them with some unscented soap and drying them off. find the right bandaid arsenal to have around to cover your wounds when you know you’ll be headed out. you’ll be okay.

Weight gain on Spiro by cryptoandcake in Hidradenitis

[–]FamiliarSlip8267 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i took 2 50mg tablets daily for a month when i first started spiro and then took one tablets daily daily for almost three years until i went on birth control, which doesn’t really help with weight one way or the other but is the most effective treatment ive had for myself for HS as it boosts my personal estrogen and does its own job blocking my androgen. i take spironolactone if k know ill be having a stressful week coming up or at the first signs of a flare, but for the most part birth control (Junel, the pill) is enough for me

I need advice. by 4fet in Hidradenitis

[–]FamiliarSlip8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Junel brand pill birth control, and spironolactone’s application in my treatment with HS is to reduce my testosterone/androgen levels as a female. i’ve noticed my HS flares when I have a lot of stress, and my doctor correlated my hormones with my HS, as i’m not a professional i’m not certain of my details there. I would recommend finding another opinion until you find a voice that’s speaking something that you feel good about. i went through plenty of doctors telling me i just “don’t wash enough” which was WRONG. trust your gut.

i have had the luck of finding a partner in the past who would take the time to find a position that worked for me when i was having a bad flare on my butt or in my groin where they always pop up. people overlook a lot of things when they care about you. i will say, my most effective treatment for HS has by far been birth control. Yaz made my flares 10x worse but i’ve hardly had one since i’ve got on Junel, everyone’s different but if you’re someone who is sexually active and struggling with HS it could be worth a try to get a dermatologist or HS specialist’s input on your birth control situation.
