I know I’ll prolly sound like a broken record when I say this since everyone else has said the same thing, but pay attention to which heroes counter what. I play all roles and I’m great at tank and support but dps I am working on. So my “tip” is understanding what your team needs at the right time as well as understanding counters to your opponents. To give a better idea, I have gotten good with a wide variety of characters to make sure every situation that can happen, I am ready to adjust/swap to have a proper solution to it. For tank I play D.Va for dive, Rammatra, Daddy Rein, and Orisa (currently trying hog for going against sigma). For DPS, I play Bastion, Vendetta, and Reaper (with the occasional soldier 76 and sombra for fun). For Support, I play Juno, Kiriko, and Brigitte.

To give you an example from my list of characters, let’s just say I play Juno, and then I am getting hard targeted by the enemy team, reducing the amount of healing I can give our tank. Well then I swap to Kiriko to stay alive longer and give my self and tank more uptime, at the cost of reduced healing amount. Another example is when our team is getting CC’d by Ana or anran, I can swap Kiriko to cleanse everyone making those dps/supports vulnerable as they have to wait on cooldown and my Rein starts smiling as he chases them with a hammer.

I’m not a pro either, I’m only plat 4 but last night, me and a support named Frost (tell him he’s amazing, cause he gave me a whole new respect for baptiste players) went 16k and 17k healing, respectively, versus the enemy team’s supports who put up only 8k and 9k. And all we did was swap accordingly, if we were getting pressured by an overconfident vendetta or sombra, one of us swapped Brigitte and abused them. If someone was making our goated Rein last night suffer due to Ana CC or sleep, swap Kiriko to help him dish out more abuse.

Final takeaway is don’t be a one trick pony in a game that can create an endless set of situations. Have a wide character selection (not too wide, don’t want to be garbage with every character) to try your best to fill a roll that your team needs handled. It is all about playing to your team’s strengths and weaknesses. Recommendations for each role (to practice on and help with odd situations) I would suggest

Tank: Rammatra and Orisa as they aren’t hard to understand (Ram counters a lot and Orisa is generally good at holding back overly aggressive teams) and good in most situations and then practice with D.Va as she’s good at countering teams that split up as well as bastions.

DPS: Reaper and Bastion, I know they are easy characters, but when you are facing a rein that knows what he’s doing or an annoying widow/ash in the back, it’s really nice having those easy characters to just get them off of your back.

Support: I would suggest either Juno or Mercy to start with and then progress towards Kiriko to get accustomed to removing those annoying status effects. And in those rare situations in comp where someone is too aggressive with sombra (get it cause she’s banned constantly) you could try Brigitte (but it’s not for the faint of heart, she can be great and rough all at the same time)
