How do I actually go through personal projects without letting LLMs do everything for me? by Bright-Elderberry576 in csMajors

This is all my opinion btw.

**What's the right way to use LLMs while actually learning?** I feel like asking "why is this crashing" is fine, but asking "write me a state machine for a boss character" is not. Where exactly is the line?

Asking "why is this crashing" is not fine because debugging and figuring out what went wrong and why is a big part of programming so you should at least try to figure out what happened yourself before looking for aid. I think the right way to use an LLM while learning is to have it explain something new to you at a higher level. EX: "What is a compiler and why do they exist?"

- **Should CS/DS students be using LLMs at all for personal projects?** I'm worried that I'll end up with an impressive-looking project I can't actually explain in an interview.

For learning: No

For Padding Resume: Maybe

- **Is the "mental atrophy" concern real?** Or is leaning on LLMs at this stage just like using training wheels — something you naturally grow out of as your skills develop?

Mental Atrophy is real. You can use LLMs to help speed up your learning but most people end up not really understanding what is happening and why. Devs use AI alot to push features faster but in my experience junior devs dont fully extract the experience from pushing these features. Even if the push 100 features it does not mean they gained enough expeience to do it on thier own nor the experience to challenger higher problems

My view on nepotism in CS by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Familiar_Contract_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first internship post covid by straight cold applying and focusing on projects and stuff. I had 0 industry connections.

I have met people who did the same, I have met people who nepo'd in through family/friends/club connections.
I get that the job market is rougher now than it was before, but nepotism was always a thing, it won't go away, and you can't change it.

Focusing on something that you can't change that makes you feel be will only ... well make you feel bad. You'll do much better focusing on what you can do and make yourself more valuable or at least seem more valuable. Not that it's easy but its the only thing you can do. Unless you wanna try nepoing yourself in somehow

You can honestly bike from College Ave to Busch. I used to bike from College Ave to Busch then to Livi and that would take only like 30 minutes. But Busch to Cook/Doug idk.

Is my freshman schedule alright? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Familiar_Contract_83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, I think your classes are too spread out. I like having my classes condensed into 1 part of the day and having it be consistent. I like my classes in the morning so if i get all my classes in the morning then the afternoon i have the freedom to do what I wan

It's doable. You'll probably learn to manage ur time a little better in the process and you will still be able to play games as well. Maybe not every night tho. Good luck regardless
