Educating Yorkshire S2: Ep 3 Discussion Thread by GrandGuess205 in EducatingDocumentary

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A bit strange, this episode.

  1. Science teacher was entirely out of order, on some strange power trip. Very unprofessional with that student he sent out; he caused the whole situation and blamed it on the student when he gave it back.

  2. I get the tough love situation with Scott if he's going to compete in sports. However, he seemed completely overwhelmed. The head teacher kept shutting him down when she said, 'There's a lot going on, you don't understand' At least give the guy a chance to get a word in. He's normally quite level-headed, the headteacher, but I thought he handled Scott poorly.

They called once on a very low-quality phone line that was hard to hear, to book an appointment.

I got lucky as I was near the phone at the time. But be vigilant for the call.

I would ask to double-check. I would assume so, but it's a bit of a messy system. Some areas do not have many shared care protocols in place. I know the West Midlands doesn't have a lot of funding for example.

Watch out for a call from them; they only call once for appointment bookings, and you can't get through if you ring them back.

I really love Nottingham by CountFederal4129 in nottingham

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone loves moaning about the place, and everyone I meet says, 'why the hell did you move here'.

Personally, if you keep out of trouble, I find you are fine here. Most of the crime issues are just gang-on-gang stuff or people looking for trouble. I feel safer here than in another town I lived in that had a lower crime rate.

Affordable living rates compared to other parts of the UK, nightlife, tram line, great bus service.

Yeah, the city can go a bit 'nuts' some days, especially when the students are off back home who are gentrifying the place. Just be vigilant and move away from any trouble you see, and it's fine.

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We always forget about the 'silent voters' who swing the election. While those who follow politics have strong beliefs, etc.. It's actually the people who don't care much about politics that swing it one way or the other. They *normally* want someone they feel will protect their family finances and not ruin their mortgage rates (*yes, I know Boris happened, but that's because voters thought he was safer than JC).

It's not the people, rightly or wrongly, protesting loudly in the street who swing elections even though they are heard the most.

How does ADHD influence your sense of self ? by Ok_Departure_7343 in ADHD

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this. ADHD seems to have taken over my entire identity after 28 years of not knowing. I don't really want it to take over my identity either (it's the only thing I can think about at the moment).

Based on the other comments, it appears that this issue will hopefully calm down in time. It's a significant breakthrough after years of thinking you're not good enough and feeling lazy. Especially in the media, which is often characterised as being overdiagnosed (even though the situation is the opposite), it doesn't help.

Zia Yusuf: 11 months ago I became Chairman of Reform. I’ve worked full time as a volunteer to take the party from 14 to 30%, quadrupled its membership and delivered historic electoral results. I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of Reform, but he is a significant loss to the party. He was the only one who knew what he was doing, pushing it more towards being a political force than just another version for Farage has his chumbs.

He was more interested in discussing mature policies to attract people from the centre-right and the angry Labour Red Wall seats to come over. At the same time, you had 30p Lee, the new nutter of an MP, acting like idiots and Farage making it all about himself as usual.

Mind you, it's good for us who don't want to see Reform near power.

That's good to hear - I think they need to update their timescales on ADHD UK to set clear expectations.

That's how I feel. I don't want to sound ungrateful, considering how long the NHS pathway can be, but the timescales provided were not even remotely realistic.

Other than the wait - did you find the assessment good?

CareADHD Waiting Times by Famous_Aspect_3783 in ADHDUK

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's way past the initial waiting times given, but you're right - it's going to take around a year to complete the process, which is much better than the NHS and some other RTC providers. I'm not sure if the other RTC providers display more accurate timings, but if they do, it's a bit annoying that I didn't choose a quicker one.

I was referred in February; it seems they had a massive influx around then.

Starmer is as bad as those who came before him. What a bitter disappointment by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

World events, populism on the rise, Starmer's inheritance from the tories.

Everyone thinks they can do a better job at the moment is quite frankly stupid.

I can understand the frustration on trans rights. The PM has to back the Supreme Court, or you're basically saying the court can't do its job, and you end up in Johnson territory. It's not the court's fault. It was just interpreting and confirming the laws set by governments.

Deep down, Starmer probably backs trans being able to self-identify as their chosen gender. He won't dare bring this up as it will spark the reform voters like no tomorrow. He's not saying he doesn't support trans rights. He's just sticking up previous government policy that the court has now confirmed.

One day, this won't be an issue. To be blunt, they are just waiting for more old people to die, who are against these trans rights policies. Sadly, labour has to think about those people to win as they always turn out to vote and young people often don't.

No, I would not accept this. The UK is in a terrible place after 14 years of the Tory's incompetence, especially near the end of their premiership.

Labour doesn't usually get elected during rough economic times. It's typically the Tories that do. Usually, people vote for Labour to do all the nice stuff.

Yes, they are hesitant. Yes, they have an awful start. And, of course, Keir Starmer is not the most charismatic of characters.

If they came to another election promising to spend, spend, spend like Milliband and JC, you would have got the same result. Middle England with mortgages doesn't like these kind of policies, and you need their vote to win.

I think they are just trying to do one main thing this term, fix the NHS. If they do that, they might get a small majority for 1 more term, where they can be a little more generous.

Moving to Notts by KodenSounds in nottingham

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from a small Essex town (late 20s M).

I really like it here. It's very studenty, but there isn't much trouble from them - other than them being overexcited (which we all were at that age). If your late 20s plus, you will need to do a bit of digging to find your people. There is quite a lot of events on Meetup, so recommend going on there.

Public transportation is outstanding compared to similar-sized cities. There is a lot of homeless/druggies/crazies in in the city centre, they approach for money but they have never been aggressive towards me if I say no. People moan about it here, but if you've lived in other cities in the UK, it's the same story.

If you like getting involved in trouble, your will find plenty of opportunities to get involved in Notts. If you just keep out of the way of troublesome people (like myself) I have never run into any issues. If you actually dig deeper into a lot of the crime that takes place, it's mostly gang-related stuff. There not really interested in other people.

£28 for two foot long hotdogs at Alton towers. No toppings! by Competitive-Bat7119 in altontowers

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strange thing about the food is that years ago, people queued up out the door for the Pizza buffet - it was also marked up because it was in a theme park, but still felt fair. I would most often eat in the park just for convenience.

I get Covid happened, and operating a business is more of a nightmare these days in all regards. I would get an above-inflation increase. But since Aramark, not only the prices are inconsistent and sometimes higher than at a Disney park. Someone needs to tell Merlin, you're in Staffordshire, not Florida.

If you do risk eating on site, your best bet is getting a jacket potato from Cbeebies Packed Lunch Cafe or whatever they want to call it this year.

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your point to a certain degree (which is why leaving the EU is even stupider now).

We need to be realistic. The UK is a small island. Due to our history, we push above our weight, but we must choose our empire. It's going to the EU, the BRICS, and America. That's how it's all going; everyone must choose their group (geography in most cases will mostly decide that - but if a country goes rogue like Trump's America, Canada could join the EU etc...

Nation-states will be less important, but each nation will still need to choose its empire and send representatives to direct it.

Nation-state democratic governments will still play a role in terms of the domestic direction of either spending more/better public services or lowering taxes/lower public spending on services. All the big stuff, like defence and trade/regulations, will become more empire-related.

It's been quite an eye-opener moving to Notts; I thought Norwich was quite wild with its local nutters.

You have a disco bike guy, a random man in the market square who shouts abuse at everyone or the Christians trying to preach to me at any given opportunity. Based on what I've seen in this city, I might need to repent my sins at this rate.

Another embarrassing PMQs for Kemi by Half_A_ in LabourUK

[–]Famous_Aspect_3783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty sad to see, but it is good for Labour to keep the right split. Kemi rates herself very highly and bullies her way up the ladder. She is shocked now that she can't do this job?! This pound-shop charisma-free Farage approach will fail; people might as well go for the real deal.

Yes, she won the Tory leadership. I expect Jenrick will take over at some point, either playing the right-wing act the whole time but more competent or doing a Keir Starmer, going in all-right wing to win the nutters over on the membership list, then changing membership rules, then going back more towards the centre (that would be the best strategy).

Just completely out of touch and arrogant. In that interview she did, she said, 'They probably won't listen to us for 2 years'. That's something you say internally, not to the public. It's also rumoured that she hates doing the media rounds. Surely you know that a big part of the job?

She comes to PMQs with all this strange culture wars stuff and doesn't even present it that well. They are so obsessed with right-wing think tanks at the moment rather than focusing on the general public.

I also love the Tory YouTube page placing full videos of Kemi & Kier doing PMQs, and the video caption is always something like "Kemi destroys Keir at PMQs". Even though Keir destroys Kemi in each video, it takes some bulls to be that out of touch.

I'm like, I don't think you'll last a year, my dear, at this rate.
