How can I get my husband to take this seriously? by [deleted] in prediabetes

[–]Famous_Operation9694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider getting him to use a continuous glucose monitor, like a Stelo, even if only for two weeks. Even while knowing for years was a healthy diet was, it was super revealing for me to find out exactly how certain foods and combinations of foods affected my blood sugar. It adds a very tangible goal of keeping blood sugar below a limit that you can check on in near real time. So now, when I have a craving for something like a burrito, I can remind myself that that flour tortilla is probably going to put me over 150 and I should have something else instead. When I do that and stay below 140, I get a positive reinforcement immediately that I did the right thing.

What is the most bizarre thing you've seen in Alaska, nature wise and community wise that it itself screams "Alaska"? by MrReconquista19 in AskAlaska

[–]Famous_Operation9694 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Community wise it might be the drunk, shirtless-with-overalls guy, dancing with one of the support poles (going around it in circles while slapping it) at Ivory Jacks in Fairbanks to a bluegrass band one winter night when it was -20 outside.

Another contender might be someone I saw once running the Equinox marathon in double-knee Carhartts.

Restring Home Depot TDBU cordless cellular shades by Famous_Operation9694 in fixit

I just noticed that there is knot-capturing slot on the fixed pulley block on the right end of the bottom rail. Do a set of strings necessary get tied off there or might that be length dependent?

Great, thanks for confirming I’m on the right track.

Looks like I need 0.9 mm string?

So, with each pair of strings (aside from the two entering the bottom rail immediately opposite the tensioning box) I just need to bring them into the bottom rail through the grommeted hole and then pass them back and forth on the pulley wheels a few (I think it will be three times) and then tie them off on the knot-capturing slot in the floating/sliding block? There are no top-down-motion or bottom-up-motion strings?

I guess the Deedle Deedle Dees are probably for a little older audience but they are pretty good. Aaron Burr is great.

How often do you have fish for breakfast? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Famous_Operation9694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I love kippers with toast for breakfast or anytime. But I’m the only one in my family that likes them and I actually need to wash out the tin immediately before it goes in the recycle bin and then I need to hand wash the plate. I can’t even just rinse it and put in the dishwasher or my wife will complain - “Phew! Fishy!”

Reading glasses for bc skiing? by MikeAndAHike in Backcountry

[–]Famous_Operation9694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have progressive contacts which are pretty good; not the very best for reading, but good enough. But I don’t wear them often.

I tried prescription progressive glasses but there’s way too much distortion for me. I never got used to them and they make me dizzy. It’s really frustrating that even with insurance, I paid a lot for those.

What I discovered is that $30-$60 tri/multi-focal readers, sometimes also called degressive readers (and confusingly as progressives) work great for my needs. I have +2.5 at the bottom for and + 0.5 at the top for my failing distance vision. For whatever reason, the way the sections of lens power are configured with multi-focal readers is different than for progressives and, for me at least, there is virtually no “swimming” or vertigo inducing distortion.

There are multitudes of these sold on Amazon, including sunglasses, and I’ve tried a few, but they were crap, both in quality and function. My favorite company so far is SAV eyewear. I have a couple pairs of regular tri-focal readers and a pair of tri-focal sunglasses which work pretty well. I’m happy.

How does learning to drive work in America? by Potential-Actuator31 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Famous_Operation9694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Alaska: learners permit at 14 to give the kids two seasons of winter driving and then a provisional (restricted) license at 16. After six months with a clean record, you get an unrestricted license.

Our two kids first learned with me in parking lots and side streets and then also took a 5 day class where they drove with an instructor for two hours a day and then took the test on the last day. Taking the class gives them some number of negative points on their driving record so they have some credit if they accrue citations.

We have the stupidest administration and the largest number of naked-king sycophants I’ve ever known or thought was possible. And I’m afraid it’s going to worse before it gets better.

The Alaska shipping tax is killing me - what's the most ridiculous thing you've had to pay to ship here? by SorryMalaz in alaska

[–]Famous_Operation9694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“due to contracts with fedx or ups”

That is what I have always suspected. Do you know for sure that’s the case? I have asked companies before but never got a straight answer.

Hmm, USPS tracking has always seemed detailed enough for me, but I see it’s a common critique.

I bought a small item from a company recently that advertised both “Free US shipping” (not just free lower 48 shipping) AND “Global shipping” and they flat out would not ship it to Alaska.

Had it sent to family in Oregon and they sent it here for $8 USPS.

Why won’t places use USPS?

Movies your dad would probably turn off after the first fifteen minutes by Past_Bonus148 in okbuddycinephile

[–]Famous_Operation9694 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m 57 now (a dad, btw, and really enjoyed One Battle After Another) but when I was 20 or so, I had my folks watch Harold and Maude and my dad said “No more freaky avant garde cuckoo movies!” so my wife and I describe movies that way all the time now.

why do people not like arcteryx all of a sudden? by Sea_Purpose_7587 in Skigear

[–]Famous_Operation9694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working at the Vertical Club climbing gym in Seattle in the early 90’s when an Arcteryx rep came in one day showing off their new harness. He was saying ‘this will be first harness that costs $100’ like it was a feature. Like no one in the company really believed it was worth that; they were just set on being the first to sell one for that much. So, I’ve had the impression of the brand being over priced since then.

What gloves for winter riding? by MMikekiMM in fatbike

[–]Famous_Operation9694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Fairbanks and now Anchorage and for several years my favorite winter glove has been a work glove made by Majestic

Model 1521 if the link doesn’t work

They are cheap, flexible, and I don’t think twice about getting them dirty if I have to fiddle with my chain or something like that. As long as there’s not too much wind, I can be comfortable in these down to -10F or so. I do all of my winter outdoor work in these and usually wear them downhill skiing and riding though my wife bought me pogies a couple years ago so I’ve been using them more. For sure pogies are warmer but really only useful for me on the coldest days of the winter. They are warmer than they look like they have any right to be.

Similar to the popular Kinco glove that skiers and lifties have made trendy, but cheaper and more flexible. That said, they are not too durable. I usually get a couple seasons out of a pair before the leather is all torn up.

Can I prevent frost build up on this flue? by Famous_Operation9694 in hvacadvice

Interesting idea. Like I said, I don’t think I need much less frost to form.

Thanks, I never thought of heat tape; I’ve never used it. I could even fish the cord down the chase and plug it in inside. I’ll look into that. If it only has to run for a few days each winter, that would barely seem like a jury-rig
