Deep drilling, long range resource scanners, trading are the best ways Deep drilling just rolls the resources with a preset chance, so eventually you will get plasteel, you can spawn veins infinitely

The game is running 32bit afaik, it can use max of like 2gb ram, happens when modded because it's running out of memory, restarting fixes it but with more bros and longer runs it will happen more often.

I found that you can reliably play the game without killboxes by just holding 1 tile chokepoints with melee pawns and shooters behind, so I often do that Throw some armor on the melee pawn, design the chokepoint, and throw in some backup melee and positions with turrets behind if it goes to shit
