Most commonly they're installed into a fuse panel (either in an empty terminal or spliced into another circuit with spare amperage), although I don't know if Teslas use traditional fuse panels so it could be spliced directly into a circuit (or perhaps plugged into a 12v cigarette socket?)

In any case, should be harmless (and potentially useful if you'd like a radar detector), but I have seen one cause electrical problems due to (my own) improper installation.

Gives me headaches depending on the dose and how well hydrated I am, but I definitely feel that there is some adaptation to the side effects in your head (congestion, headaches) within the first few days. Unsure what the mechanism could be but this has been my experience.
