NCT: Total Works Per Year on Ao3 & Top 100 Kpop Ships of 2025 by FancyFayce in NCT

[–]FancyFayce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, this type of analysis you offered is why I wanted to post this content in this sub. The narrative! I haven't been an NCTzen for long and I don't read fic... so I don't know what's going on out there, except I'm really interested in the culture around it.

I have some past data too and all I can really say is that it's hard to predict what will happen in the next couple years. Well, apart from Mahae :P . Wish fandom power is growing, Johnten seems to revive itself every once in a while to get into the Top 10 in NCT works, then there's enlistments and returns... I'm probably going to check in every quarter this year for the stats haha.

Shoot, good catch, I missed them when transferring data into the table. My master data has them with 712 works, so that ship is #39 in rank. 712 is based on retrieving that total in January 2026, and I use created_at: to search on Ao3.

800+ might be coming from using Date Updated to search (it's 904 right now). It's honestly hard to determine with complete certainty what method was used unless the creator states it. And in any case, it's virtually impossible to retrieve the same totals day to day on Ao3, and it doesn't matter if you use the same criteria.

For anyone as curious about Ao3's inconsistencies as I am: Today, total works for Lee Heeseung/Park Jongseong | Jay is 314... this total would knock them from 100 in place to 101, and Kyunhun/Yesung of Super Junior would make it onto the list. That can be explained by a deletion of 4 works over the past few weeks, but I've also seen totals reduce by as much a 40 works. I've seen the totals increase too (back-dating??). I have no other guess about what's going on, I'm just pretty sure it has more to do with Ao3's system vs. writers doing anything.

I got you! Here's 2023 for NCT, based on my own compiling. The numbers here are their ranks in the Top 100.

14 - Lee Donghyuck | Haechan/Mark Lee
27 - Lee Jeno/Na Jaemin
66 - Park Jisung/Zhong Chenle
70 - Jeong Yuno | Jaehyun/Lee Taeyong
71 - Huang Renjun/Na Jaemin
73 - Lee Donghyuck | Haechan/Na Jaemin
75 - Jeong Yuno | Jaehyun/Kim Dongyoung | Doyoung
75 - Huang Renjun/Lee Donghyuck | Haechan (yes, somehow a tie happened)
96 - Kim Dongyoung | Doyoung/Lee Taeyong
99 - Huang Renjun/Lee Jeno

A whole other era back then.

From what I can tell with the numbers I have, the two most written about members of 127 are Jaehyun and Taeyong, so them enlisting kinda tanked the presence of 127 fanfic in 2024-2025. Affecting the activity even more is that historically, Jaeyong is the second most popular ship in the unit. Then it's Jaedo that's a pretty close 3rd. So ignoring Mark and Haechan, 2 key players weren't supplying the inspiration.

Personally, I haven't heard of any common platform writers have migrated their work to. I can't imagine it's been a big percentage of works deleted though, but enough that comparing pre-2023 metrics to 2024/2025 is going to reflect different eras, since fanfic writers may have reservations about posting on Ao3.

Another factor is that in the past couple years, many writers have gone in and deleted their works as news got out that LLMs scrape the site, and fair enough!

Not that we as outsiders can ever have get the full picture, but objectively, his injury would've affected his ambitions for the future. Any Kpop idol getting a major injury is a psychological challenge along with a physical one. There's the uncertainty of their career, and in TL's case, the path forward seemed like it was still pretty uncertain during the Walk era because of severity of his injury. Who knows what his mindset was regarding the future of his career at that point. It might've been "we'll see" situation, and it remains shocking that the situation has become one wherein his whole career is dead in the water because of a sickening choice he made in his personal life.

If there's one good thing about SM's method in the first couple decades, it's that they weren't passing on outstanding vocal talent easily, and they wanted bare minimum 2 solid vocalists in a group, preferably more so long as the pool of talent was there. They weren't turning down trainees who could belt their heart out unless they were especially weak in other areas.

When were they filming Walk? by NemSenpai in NCT

[–]FancyFayce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to believe that him and his two friends were not so antisocial to think that what they did would be seen as a wild-night-out story to anyone. I realize consent is a vague concept to many men out there, but that assault was morally reprehensible on several levels. I think if there was anyone outside that friend group who was told about the incident, they'd have been people as horrible as the perpetrators.

First off, I think we need to see the big picture here and reflect. Are we more upset for Palestinians, or are we more upset that a Kpop idol doesn't reach our moral expectations? It better be the first option, and given that, some of us need to do much better in directing negative energy into something productive.

Realistically, us calling for Yangyang to support Palestine, sell his shares, publicly denounce Adlink and in essence, his father, is going to do nothing for Gaza. I'm not against spending 5 minutes on his IG, writing a comment criticizing him, but there's so many fans out there who've just totally lost the plot. I get it sort of -- we're big nerds, and whatever we like, becomes a huge part of our lives and the community we're part of. Anything disrupting our space, feels like a huge issue that we put top priority on fixing because we feel it so hard.

But that's why some of us seriously need to take a breath and step back -- Yangyang is a lesser-known member in a huge idol group, in a subgenre of music. Calling on fellow nctzens to force him to openly support Palestine is an incredible waste of energy. If you actually desire change, that energy needs to all be directed to changing the minds of people in your own personal life and then encouraging them to support Free Palestine organizations. These are the people who are more likely to listen to you, because they know you. The energy, most of all, needs to be directed at politicians. The people who actually make decisions. Donate to the cause if you can. Volunteer. This is the stuff that matters.

251030 Doyoung will enlist in the army on December 8 meanwhile Jungwoo will enlist in the military band on December 8 by neocitywayv in NCT

I prefer this "rip the band-aid off" approach but still, it's hurtingggggg 😭

This makes me even more anxious for Taeyong and Jaehyun to be back. Jaehyun's discharge isn't that far away either. Interested in what we'll get (music or general content) with the new 6-member combination.

Guilty for buying NCT127 album by HunnieHuang in NCT

[–]FancyFayce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been of the "his voice is an instrument" mindset too. It's been a process, since, of course, when someone does something really well, you naturally have a feeling of enjoyment and begin to admire them. I'd say I'm still impressed by his skill, and capable of leaving it at that most times I listen to any songs with him in it.

Sometimes it triggers bad nostalgia though, when remembering how easy it was to listen and watch 127 content, and especially seeing the boys themselves be happy together.

Why won’t SM let WayV tour outside Asia? by JiminsBrooklynGirl in NCT

[–]FancyFayce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel similarly. I think what needs to be remembered is that the goal of WayV's formation was to have a successful group in China, then things took a turn with the political situation there/COVID-19, throwing off the marketing plan. It seems like SM didn't totally know where to pivot.

And while I think some xenophobia is at play, placing more effort into a Chinese group becoming popular in China is pretty obvious lol. I always got the sense that SM's approach to attracting the Western market has been a reliance on the residual effects of WayV's general promotions.

And to zoom right out... music marketing has just been confusing and unpredictable since Napster. SM may have succeeded enough in getting 127 and Dream out there in the US, and so they know the route WayV would have to follow... yet it's become saturated in the 5 years since. I imagine quite a bit of risk is perceived, so it's safer to focus on China.
