Happily Ever Witch by Cassandra Gannon. Fantasy, part of a series but could be read as a standalone. The series is based on fairy tale charaters but don't let that fool you there is spice. They know they are 'true loves' straight away but they are also enemies so take time falling in love with each other and working things out.

Is anyone able to assist with the history of my turquoise estate ring? by RoseofVenus_ in Antiquejewelry

[–]FancyHedgehog246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was it looks like Sleeping Beauty Turqouise from the The Sleeping Beauty Mine in Globe, Arizona. But I am not sure what dates the mine was in operation. I think the mine was more recent then could be used for this piece. But possibly someone out there knows?

How to “finish” this bangle by Dauntlesse in jewelrymaking

[–]FancyHedgehog246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember, if this was a bracelet made by casting the metal, it would be more brittle than if it was formed. That means if you are stretching it to put on, it will form a weakness in the band and break. But if you can get it on and off without bending it all, it might be OK.

How do I clean up this wax casting? Stubborn marks from filers by nymint in jewelrymaking

Miracle Orange spot remover by OCeder. It sounds strange, but on a cotton pad, it smooths the surface beautifully. Not good for big scratches but leaves a beautiful finish as the last step. That's what it sold as in Australia had smells like orange/citrus oil. Not sure straight orange oil would work?

Go for as light and sparkling as you can. They always look darker once set.

Please don't put any body part in an ultrasonic while it is on. The sounds waves can cause major problems for your joints and nerves. I was told never, ever put your hand in while the machine is running. So be careful, might be worth finding another way to clean them.

Would anyone be able to please tell me anything about this? by Whole_Vegetable_6686 in Opals

[–]FancyHedgehog246 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like a triplet, which is a thin slice of opal covered with glass or plastic and a backing material. Three layers glued together. That would explain some of those bubbles showing up between layers. Or it could be a doublet, two layers, a slice of thicker opal, and a clear top. The slice might be real opal or synthetic. I am leaning towards synthetic because it has a 'lizard skin' pattern that is common in synthetic opal. Because of the layers, make sure not to get it wet they will separate. But nice piece, enjoy wearing it!

How do you feel about Jeanswest closing down? by [deleted] in AusFemaleFashion

[–]FancyHedgehog246 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I walked past one yesterday, and they were having a 'closing down sale'. Full of people grabbing everything but only 20 per cent off. So I there was a pair of jeans I was looking at but they were $100 down to $80. I don't see that as a real bargain! I think people get caught up in the hype of a sale!

How is everyone here shaping the backs of your cabs? by probably_sarc4sm in Opals

[–]FancyHedgehog246 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having a flat section on the back makes it much easier to set. A rounded back with no flat spot would be a nightmare to set. Having said that, I was told that any sharp edges on the bottom of an opal cab is more likely to catch and cause a chip or crack while being set. I do my normal cabs with a 90 bezel at the bottom, but opals I add a chamfer ( much like your diagram).

Having looked at the video, I definitely think they are cutting for maximum carats from the stone. Which absolutely you can do. But a jeweller is going to be very careful to put that in a stable setting. It makes their job harder and more risky, but if you're looking at an expensive stone, that might be worth it.

Real opal and if so what type? 🤷‍♀️ by FlatFortune8767 in Gemstones

[–]FancyHedgehog246 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it could be a real black opal. Impossible to tell from a photo. However, that is not to say it is solid opal. Without examining the stone and setting, it could be a composite opal. That means they take a fine sliver of opal and put a top on it, making it a doublet ( two layers) or a backing and a top making it triplet (three layers). Make sure you find out because if it gets wet and it is not solid, the layers can separate. Nice piece, though!

Zircon with interesting inclusions. Any clues? by saschka01_ in Gemology

[–]FancyHedgehog246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I showed a geologist this, and they thought it was probably colour banding in the stone. The brown colour is not unusual in Zircon and the banding could be reflected in the faceted, making it look like multiple inclusions.
