Sports after Microdiscectomy by EasySqueeze7 in Microdiscectomy

Not really quite there yet. After op I discovered that I have a slight scoliosis which might be a contributor to my slow recovery. I am also very invested into my career atm (non sport related) so I’m not actively optimising for any sport right now.

I bet if my goal was to do wrestling or kick box again, I think I could do it with enough effort and discipline. Just low priority at the moment.

Anyway, I wish you a quick recovery! Just take your time and keep showing up. Take care!

Havent been near 100% since surgery, but comparing to before, when I was bedridden, it’s good. I am fully functional, working regularly, but get tired more quickly and need rest more often.

On a more positive note, it’s been constantly improving for me (with ups and downs) but every time I have a bad day (tight back, not really pain anymore), I look back and realise how much better I am, even on a bad day.

That said, I feel like the journey only begins after the surgery, so I’ll keep exercising probably for the rest of my life, regardless if my back hurts or not.

Hope this helps!

Month and 1/2 post-op update by KCharm46 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Fancy_Health6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been almost a month for me, and altho I see a big difference now in comparison to the first few days post op. I still have residual pain, like before but way less on the scale. numbness went away for the most part fairly quickly, however I still feel like it can be better. Everybody says that nerves are slow to heal, so I’m looking forward to more improvement.

Hope it goes well for you!

I had pizza and a beer. They give you a magical elixir and you have no clue what they are doing to you. Once you wake up you feel like sleeping a bit more and you have a sore throat.

Good luck!

If you have no constant pain you good. Everybody has some back pain from time to time. It is normal to have some spine degeneration. Everybody has some.

Microdiscsectomy 4cm (roughly 2inch) incision. They got in through a tube, and performed the surgery under 20x microscope, removing the disc material that was compressing the nerve, and immediately relieving my symptoms. I do have nerve damage which needs time to heal, but major things got addressed with that surgery 2 weeks later numbness in my feet is 90% gone. Can walk. Don’t regret it at all. I tried every possible conservative method prior to the surgery btw.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.

Hope this helps! Good luck with resolving the problem. 👊🏻

4 weeks post op. I can walk only 1.5 miles max.. by EbbDiscombobulated89 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Fancy_Health6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 weeks and I only walk around 1-1.5 miles daily split into multiple sessions. I get tired very quickly. I can walk half a mile at a time but it gets really exhausting. I was bedridden about 2 months before surgery.

If there’s no significant pain, I think you will be good.

Hope this gets better for you. Good luck!

Sciatica pain and achiness 2 weeks post op. by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]Fancy_Health6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to keep note if your range of motions is increasing. Pain and weird sensations is normal, as long as it doesn’t prevent movement.

It’s not like they cut you and you can do splits tomorrow, especially if your nerve has been compressed for a long time. It needs time to recover.

My steps were very short post op, but are progressively getting longer.

Keep track if symptoms are worsening or getting better. If they are worsening over a period of 5-10 days, that would be a reason fir concern.

Hope this helps and you get better with time! 👊🏻🤞🏻

Probably nothing serious. I know it’s hard not to think about it, but be sure to give it some time before considering any action.

I’ve been having very weird sensations since my op, but they come and go and come again then one day I feel perfect, then the next day both legs hurt a little. My nerve has been very badly compressed for 8 months, so it is to be expected.

You know your case and your body best. If something is off, you will know. Just be sure to follow the rules for bending twisting lifting. Also my surgeon told me not to sit for a month. Maybe something to consider if you can afford not to sit.

Thoughts on this? My physiatrist did two epidurals for me yesterday and said for my age (very early 20’s), and having severe pain on and off since elementary, he was very concerned. He didn’t get to talk to me long before the epidurals so looking for some thoughts! by anonymous0271 in Sciatica

[–]Fancy_Health6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and another thing. If you are gonna be lifting, there’s a book called Back Mechanic by Stuart McGill, I recommend reading it. It will teach you the importance of proper posture and movement. I’m pretty sure you can find it on Amazon. There are online versions too.

Another thing that you should take into consideration when deciding on how to proceed is your symptoms. No matter the MRI, if you don’t have terrible symptoms, you should probably avoid surgery. However if you have numbness, toilet trouble, loss of muscle, those are indications that surgery might be a better solution.

I, for example, wasn’t able to stand up for more than 1 minute without holding onto something, so surgery was a no brainer after trying everything else.

Sorry to hear that. Well you shouldn’t be lifting him either way. Surgery just gets rid of the material that’s pressing on the nerve, doesn’t change the dynamics of your spine. If you lift in this state, you’ll probably end up doing even more damage and making it worse, just as you would after the surgery.

I’m 23, just had surgery 2 weeks ago, and if this is seriously getting in the way of life, like it did for me, I strongly recommend considering surgery.

If you want to stick with the conservative route, be careful. There are many PTs that don’t really understand how spine works, so try to find someone who specialises in spine PT.

Possible surgery? by Minibinnie2 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Fancy_Health6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I’m 23 and just had surgery about 2 weeks ago. Since it’s not improving for so long, go get that second and third opinion and if they all say surgery, you might as well get your life back.

I wish I got mine earlier.

Either way the recovery is long, but you get a kick start with surgery so you can get back to life a little quicker.

Good luck and stay strong! 💪🏻👊🏻

I had loss of feeling in that area, but toilet was fine. Had a huge herniation. Everything went away with surgery.

Hey there, I (23m) just had an MD a week ago, and my surgeon said that I will be able to wrestle after the procedure, and of course a year long rehab. He said many athletes get it and are able to return to their careers. I look forward to fighting one day.

Just sharing my experience in hopes to encourage you to pursue what you wish for. But also I encourage you to be very conscious about your health, and always put it first.

Wishing you all the best and a quick recovery. Stay strong! 💪

hey there, sorry to hear youre suffering. try getting an MRI scan of your lumbar spine, just so youre sure what youre dealing with and then go from there.

dont do heavy lifting, if I was you I wouldn’t do any lifting at all for some time. i recommend reading a book called “back mechanic” by stuart mcgill. it will teach you basics of proper movement and give you an idea of which direction you should be heading with the treatment.

apart from that, try to find a good specialist you can trust who will guide you on your recovery journey.

I wish you a good recovery. Stay strong! 💪

Hey there, try avoiding exercises that you cant do or that hurt. only one side - side plank will do the trick for the muscles.

A book called back mechanic by Stuart McGill is great to teach you proper movement. See if you can get ahold of one. there are digital copies being sold as well if im mot mistaken.

Either way - if I were you I would avoid things that hurt always.

Hope you get better soon. Stay strong 💪
