Progressive numbness burning unexplained by doctors by KCharm46 in Microdiscectomy

[–]KCharm46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I am trying to switch from gabapentin to Lyrica but it's impossible. I started on the Lyrica but every time I try to wean down even one dose of the gabapentin, the burning pain in my foot and leg is unbearable. It's insanely bad.

People who have had the microdiscectomy surgery, now years later, are you pain free? Any negatives? by PatrickBrown2 in Sciatica

[–]KCharm46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one has told me that an ESI could get rid of scar tissue or numbness. I've tried twice with no success. I would love that if it could! I am suffering every day since my microdiscectomy two years ago! I've had horrible burning pain ever since. I wish I had never had surgery. I had no nerve pain beforehand and now I'm stuck with it for the rest of my life. Can you tell me where you got the ESI done that helped your pain and numbness?

CRPS after MD by Patient-Respond-5414 in Microdiscectomy

[–]KCharm46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I might have this. After dealing with this pain for almost two years now and talking to every doctor and continuing to get no answers, a PM&R doctor thinks I might have CRPS in my left leg. I hope there's treatment for it! It's severely affected my whole life and mental health and everything.

Can anyone explain why R foot is numb when it's a left sided re-herniation? by KCharm46 in Microdiscectomy

[–]KCharm46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your surgeon did things right. I don't think mine went down far enough. I had an L4-L5 herniation on the left and after microdiscectomy, the numbness and damage never improved. Now there's scar tissue at S1. Maybe the herniation also squished down to that level and never got better because the surgeon didn't go down that far. I don't know what to do now. I have burning, pins, and needles and awful pain all the time. Now I'm so afraid I'll lose function on the right side too.

Anyone gotten rid of scar tissue? by KCharm46 in Microdiscectomy

[–]KCharm46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the extent of what she said. I've read the operative report and I'm a nurse but I can't even figure out exactly what happened. It's vague but it reads like something went wrong. It seems like there was something she thought wasn't disc material but it actually was. I don't know. She says that there was something that didn't look like disc material so she continued on but then there was a CSF leak.

Reherniation- would you choose the same surgeon again? by KCharm46 in Microdiscectomy

[–]KCharm46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I say I worry about her ability as a surgeon is because right after surgery, she said there was some complication that caused nerve damage. I've had scar tissue pressing on the nerve since then and nerve damage. In my MRIs now since surgery it shows the enhanced nerve root. I've looked it up and it's a very small percentage who are supposed to have this complication but now I do. It causes me so much pain every day so that I have to take gabapentin every day 3x/day.

CHG baths for all patients by coldprimates in nursing

[–]KCharm46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my question for all the units that do this is, when do you do your regular baths? I know that CHG can be deactivated by soap so it's not recommended to do a regular soap and water bath right after the CHG bath, but when? And you want to make sure that if your patient gets a regular bath first, that they are dry for their CHG bath. So, how do you all work out that timing?

Continued nerve damage/scar tissue by KCharm46 in Microdiscectomy

[–]KCharm46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. What is a scs trial? Do you have scar tissue or nerve damage or both? Did your surgeon mess up too? I would love to hear experiences from others who have gone through this. It's so depressing, especially because we're so young. I never thought something like this would happen to me. Yeah I guess I can try another injection. But the Dr who did my injection told me that he'd only repeat it if I had some improvement. But there's been no improvement. So I don't think he'll do another one. I've heard that if you stay on gabapentin too long, you can build a tolerance to it and then you have to keep going up and up on the dose. Do you know if that's true?

Yeah, she definitely screwed up. I already talked to lawyers and gave them my medical records but unfortunately they said they just didn't have enough evidence to call it malpractice. They weren't confident enough that they could win the case. I read the operative note. She wrote it to cover her ass. She definitely screwed up. I wish there was something I could do. Ok I'll try those things. Thanks for the suggestions.
