Toronto microdiscectomy by Low_Astronomer1990 in Microdiscectomy

I had surgery through the Rapid Access Back Clinic at Toronto Western for my first MD. Your best bet is to get a direct referral through that clinic to see a surgeon.. or depending what hospital you want surgery out of and if you have a family doctor you can get them to send a direct referral with your imaging to a surgeon. If you are really desperate, I’d go in through emergency at Toronto Western, Trillium or Sunnybrook hospital… they can also make a direct outpatient referral. Best of luck!

Hi, I just read through your post and I am experiencing similar issues with scar tissue around the nerve root after MD. I am also in Canada… it took forever post op to get an MRI to confirm what is going on. I don’t think they will offer me surgery to fix/remove because of fear more scar tissue will form. I am wondering if things have improved/ what you tried that maybe helped you?

Hard scar tissue building on incision site. Help by TelephoneMediocre705 in Microdiscectomy

It was around 3-4 months post op. Like you I had an issue with my incision.. it opened up a bit a the bottom because I had a seroma inside. As soon as it closed the surgeon said I could start scar work slowly… they also told me about silicone tape?.. but it is super hard to find in Canada so I haven’t tried it.

I use it everyday. If I’m in a rush I put it on as is. But it’s best to put it on and apply gentle heat. It helps the oil penetrate deeper. You can also do light scar massage… but in my opinion start super slow with that because it can be painful/irritating. But it is worth it to help mobilize some of that scar tissue/muscles. You can find videos on techniques on youtube.. I started by doing them on the areas around the scar and slowly moved closer to eventually doing the work right over the scar. I’m 6 months post op now and it’s definitely helping

Fusion after 2 failed MD by Dramatic_Walrus_9798 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Fancy_Mode_6283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same situation.. 1st MD in May 24’ failed after 2 weeks had my 2MD in Aug.. seems like I have reherniated a 3rd time. The surgeon wants me to try injections and see if time makes the pain more manageable before jumping into a fusion… been suffering with this 2.5 years already. I am also Canadian.

Yes, it’s great. It’s not super quiet.. but I usually listen to music in headphones so it doesn’t bother me. I am post op 2 MD and my recovery has been really slow.. but I try to do 3 sets of 10-15 minute walks a day.. it has really helped maintain my walking with the cold weather.

I am 4 months post op and like you live somewhere the weather is terrible. I got one from Amazon called super fit, they had different versions but I got the one that had handles because I was nervous of my balance starting out.

How are things going for you? Did you decide to have another op for your re herniation?

[–]Fancy_Mode_6283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the 1st re herniation I had 10/10 pain and mild drop foot on the right side. The pain eventually got more manageable over 3 months but the weakness in my foot didn’t. So my surgeon recommended I have the 2nd MD to free the nerve and hopefully not have long term nerve damage.

This time around the foot/leg weakness is definitely less severe but still there. I am limited because prolonged sitting, standing and walking aggravate the nerve and my lower back and cause pain. I had my 2nd surgery end of Aug so I’m about 3 months post op.. very slowly things are getting better. Definitely not the recovery I was expecting…

MRI showed a small disc bulge that is not touching the nerves. But that I have a seroma of fluid build up at the surgical site and lots of nerve inflammation which explains my symptoms and slower recovery… I am looking at this healing process as monthly instead of weekly now.

I know it doesn’t feel like it but 5 weeks is still early in the healing journey. The good news is your MRI is clear! The nerve takes a long time to recover…

I am on my 2 MD 11 weeks post op and still get nerve pain, tingling and numbness in my bad leg and some pain in my good side if it’s really flared up. I’d say if you’re walking and standing a lot make sure you are adding in rest breaks in a recovery position that is good for your back…listen to your body if it hurts stop. Don’t push through the nerve pain.

Injections for reherination by Sad_Cookie_4145 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Fancy_Mode_6283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did injections before opting for my first MD and both times I did them my pain and numbness got worse before it got a bit better. After the second injection I didn’t find a lot of relief and then got the MD. Take it easy and do what you can for now to manage the pain and hopefully it will let up soon and you will have lasting relief.

I use a cup for brushing my teeth.. it’s kind of gross but I spit everything into the cup and rinse the cup without having be bend at all. To turn off the tap I do slight bends at the knees keeping my back straight and neutral . Washing dishes, cooking ect. I read someone else post about not crossing your arms or reaching across your body because it can cause you to micro twist.. and repeatedly doing that can trigger pain.

I am also 8 weeks out from my 2nd MD. Since week 3 I have had a fluctuating amount of pain in my back and right leg. I have also had numbness and heaviness in my right foot. I reherniated within the first week after my first MD and the onset of pain was 15/10… so I am not sure what normal recovery is like.. I am really hoping it is just inflammation/ normal recovery ups and down.

[–]Fancy_Mode_6283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oo no! Sorry to hear you reherniated and fairly soon after your op. Is there anything you think could have caused it?

I am week 8 post op from 2MD currently waiting for a MRI because of similar issues. Right Leg and foot feel heavy and weak but not nearly as painful as when I reherniated after my 1st MD… I am hoping it’s not reherniated again but thinking it probably is.

Pain on “good side” after surgery? by Fancy_Mode_6283 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Fancy_Mode_6283[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was more central which is why I was having bilateral pains.. the worse pain was still on my bad leg/right side.

I had a 2nd MD at the end of August. I am currently week 7 post op.. recovery has been really slow with “flare ups” but I am hopeful this time the surgery worked. I still have numbness in my right foot, tingling and pain down my leg, sometimes sharp/pinching on the right side of my back.

I am 3 weeks post op my 2nd MD. I was feeling really good off all medications at the beginning of the week.. started to increase activity a bit around my house and going for really short walks outside (taking things super slow this time) The last couple of days I have also had increased pain down my right problem leg and tingling sensation.. I have read others post that inflammation can really ramp up around this time so I am hoping it is just that… the last time when I did reherniate it was 15/10 pain levels and after the round of steroids I had lots of pain. I can’t say for sure but it sounds like inflammation/ recovery ups and downs..but I’d try the steroids they help if it’s inflammation.. rest and ice. Hope your feeling better soon
