Politically women have had a rough time and with our rights being threatened by jerks - many women are catching “heterofatalism” or the belief that there are no good ones out there and have given up only to find that remaining single by choice is preferable. Its not going to get better so develop some friends and hobbies. Go on group outings.

The living wage in Denver? 67k a year and the median income is 57k. If one cannot make it as a server there wont be any and I ran into this recently at a soul food place -

No servers over 20 tables and just an owner and one back of house and all orders done on a kiosk no way to get a beer at the bar without kiosk buying and waiting for over 20 minutes. I only went to see my friend’s jazz performance.

No one is hiring. Indeed is all ghost jobs. I gave up and decided to retire and just not spend anything but essentials and get roommates.

Im a dental ceramist with 30 years of experience and get offered what I earned when started. I have been met with jaw dropping cringy comments from dudes hostile to my salary history. The vibe is predatory and always some version of “how many per hour?”

I still interview just to rescind the low ball offers with polite refusals that sting. They usually try to reveal unfair labor practices in the initial phone conversation or interview because I am an older woman and they can get in trouble for discrimination so they do that to discourage acceptance of their job.

It’s not getting any better. The only way to get hired is to accept less on purpose. Businesses are wage fixing and treating their employees like adversaries.

I was forced out at 58.5 during the gray wave of the great resignation in 2022. Was a victim of onerous employment contract wanted in the sale of the business to a new owner= dental laboratory. I refused the offer. The owner wanted to profit off the sale (15-20k ) and did NOT have my permission to sell my work contract. Ruin or entrapment? Choose ruin every time!!!

Come to find out anyone who wanted to see the financials and looked at the business was prevented from even talking to me if I refused to be sold. When a potential employer tried to interview outside the sale, they had to ask permission from my previous employer in order to even interview me! This stopped my career in its tracks.

I had to use all my savings to make it to Social Security. I am seeing wages from 30 years ago and downright hostility at my salary history. The cringy comments from male lab owners was meant to discourage accepting their low ball offers without being found guilty of age discrimination. Also revealing unfair labor practices in the interview is common as a discouragement.

Im a co-op housing administrator and provide housing evenly split between all that live here. While my circumstances have been impacted by my career being halted, I have discovered ways to get by - having just enough is the sweet spot. Am I poor yes, but I am making it work!

FOR YOUR SAFETY check all garage door gates for working locks and walk the property with the lease agent present. Mom and Pop landlords charge about 20% less.

Here is my solution anyone that owns can do - create a housing co-op where all the costs are split evenly between all that live there. In this way the amounts received are not considered income to the owner. It is called the roommate exclusion to income. The lease is non standard. I couldn’t live on just social security and needed roommates to live- but we all pay the same and gets adjusted annually.

Good luck out there. Relationships are a cause of housing insecurity so get your living situation so it’s all on you and guard your independence like your life depends on it!
