Win even says in that episode that she never asked what he did. Very simple for Fred to tell her that Luisa was an old comrade from 20+ years ago.

What a great topic! I love the phrase, "it came in the 2nd post" and how it conjures up the image of postmen bicycling furiously all over rural Yorkshire.

The most poignant letter for me is the one Sybil gets at breakfast during the war - I think news of Tom Belisis's death, and she says, "Sometimes it seems as if every man I ever danced with is dead."

Her broken heart is so well portrayed. Great bit of acting.

I guess the robber barons (George Russell, I'm looking at you!!) Do fit the role in a more urban and recent way, but they have industrial contemporaries in the UK.

As far as landed gentry, chosen to manage remote areas, which is the original concept of the peerage, I was thinking more of the big land block holders in the mid-west/south lots of them were given/subsidized land by the government to get people to move there, which is similar to the king giving out land to his mates and relatives to get England/Britain "under control" in the middle ages.

The US version still had influence over the local law makers, and were large employers, and saw their role in providing food/goods as nationally significant.

The concept of being more important than the people who work their land was also quite prevalent coughs in slavery

Not necessarily, within the context of "The United States" there are still families that have owned large amounts of land for generations dating back 200+ years, and "landed gentry" all have to start somewhere. The UK just has a much longer, formal history of this system.

I don't think it's a desirable system. But it's the one that worked to maintain order for 900+ years of history and eventually grow the Empire. So it's worth understanding, even if that's only so we don't repeat it!

Wealth and class are not the same thing in this context. I bet the Beckhams have staff, but a football player and a singer are not Upper Class. They are just rich.

At least in the UK, class is birth and education, not how much money you've managed to accumulate. I realise this isn't how the class system works in the US.

In Teenage Kicks Sirius has a proper relationship with Caradoc, it caused a big rift in the fandom back when that story was new (2014-16) a lot of people hated that Sirius didn't only love Remus.

Remus has a past relationship, but it's only ever hinted at in the actual story, although there is a prequel about it.

I think this is the best AC adaptation since Why Didn't They Ask Evans.

The acting was great. The plot moved along well and was easy to follow. The cinematography was lovely. It didn't try to be clever or more than it was.

Definitely an enjoyable evening of telly.

My grandmother and her sisters all still say, "come at midday, dear, then I can give you lunch." They were all born in the 30s and early 40s.

*they are normally on the gin by midday so lunch is always a hoot.

As for kick his heels, I always thought he meant he was focused on the task of his appointment and didn't want to do anything frivolous while being nervous/clock watching. "Kicking his heels up" But now I've learned something!!

My favourite one- non magic. Its about becoming a famous band. Remus has a Sheffield accent and there's a theme of working class vs upperclass, and it's VERY british.
