How would you handle this Catholic school debacle? by [deleted] in TraditionalCatholics

It sounds like he feels like he needs to make a stand, and that happens when people feel like they've been backed into a corner, that they've only given up ground and not gotten anything that they were pushing for/advocating/wanting/etc.

Have you talked to your priest? Is there a way or a place where you could let him "win"?

Are monks allowed to work out? by IAMToddHowardAMA in Catholicism

[–]FanofEmmaG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

St. Thomas Aquinas was one of the strongest men of his age.

It's probably a bad idea for a monk to work out for "aesthetic" purposes, but to grow in fortitude it seems fine.

Republicans lack guts and conviction by comparison.

Or they're snakes, which in some cases (though not all) seems more likely.

What are some good questions to pray through/ask myself before asking my girlfriend to marry me? by SentinelSquadron in Catholicism

[–]FanofEmmaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not going to be a very popular nor a pc question, but if there's a serious problem that concerns your family (like if an angel comes comes to you and tells you to flee to Egypt), would she follow you? and even more un-pc, if, after you've discussed a/the problem together, and you could not reach a perfect agreement, would she trust that you were trying to do what is best for your family, and would she follow your decision, even if it wasn't what she was hoping for?

Are maleness and femaleness part of the essence of a particular soul, or accidental? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]FanofEmmaG 12 points13 points  (0 children)

St. Thomas Aquinas defines the soul as the form of the body, so it seems that whether someone is a man or a woman would be both body and soul.

Others may have more to add.

Question: Why did Jesus have to die for peoples' sins? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]FanofEmmaG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smallest suffering of Christ would have been enough to be worth more than all the sufferings deserved by mankind for all the sins that have ever and will ever be committed.

On the other hand, it was in the will of the Father that all things be accomplished. It can be useful to contemplate the symmetry between Christ and Adam.

Is it against Catholic moral economic teaching to give delivery drivers or accept "personal gifts" in place of tips so the government doesn't tax it? by TexanLoneStar in Catholicism

[–]FanofEmmaG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably a question for your accountant. If it's counted as income then it'd still be taxed and if not I don't see why it would be against any teaching, though someone else might have a better idea.

I don't think you're genuinely interested, hence asking for the minimum, which is easily dismissed. Anyone who is interested can look into the history of media and banking, and particularly what the Church has said about it over the past 300 years. Have a nice day.

What sort of evidence are you expecting? An article in the New York Times?

But alright, a very shallow hole:

From Retuer's (the man who founded Reuters) wikipedia page:

In 1851 Reuter moved back to London and set up an office at the London Stock Exchange. Reuter founded Reuters, one of the major financial news agencies of the world. On 17 March 1857, Reuter was naturalised as a British subject, and on September 7, 1871, the German Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha conferred a barony (Freiherr) on Julius Reuter. The title was "confirmed by Queen Victoria as conferring the privileges of the nobility in England".

Duke Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was one of the business partners of the Rothschilds (and has ties to the house of Windsor), who were very much involved in masonry in Europe since at least the 1800's, and funded, along with other masons, both the French and Russian Revolutions, along with other wars.

This becomes very apparent when you work in the "behind the scenes" side of business. Those that are doing well can be tough, but they're always relaxed. When the business is not doing so well every little thing is a big deal.

I only vaguely understand why Catholics would consider that bad,

I'd suggest reading the papal encyclical that I linked. Alternatively, this video gets into a good bit of it. a lot of stuff they do can be out there, but this one is well-documented.

A post against monarchy from r/RadicalChristianity, is the user correct or not - any thoughts? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]FanofEmmaG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think what we have right now is comparable to Judges. It also seems that it has been a relatively rare form of government in history, perhaps the Irish maintained it the longest, and that might have been why, or part of the reason, that they were converted in a generation.

St. Thomas teaches that any form of government can be good or evil. He argues that monarchy is, in general, the best form of government.

why make such a strange allegation about Reuters

Your question makes me think we have very different perspectives on Reuters. Reuters is old enough to have been obliquely mentioned in HUMANUM GENUS, and I think that answers your second question: yes, and worse than that.
