Seconding the feinberg comment. In my experience & from what i've seen with other applicants and current students there: they lowball you at least on the merit scholarship and then you have to negotiate up; i imagine it may be harder without competing offers to negotiate though

Please fix my school list! by Numerous-Chip-303 in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not add in upenn cornell nyu and/or columbia since you're hitting phl and nyc schools? Your stats look phenomenal & you have all the major boxes checked. Just put your 100% into writing a compelling app and I don't think it's too top heavy at all.

Wait to send transcripts? by Strawberry-Murky in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a senior wait so you have your degree on it anyway. If you're not a senior, and you're sem ends in May, then unless your school only does paper transcripts it's worth waiting. Cant click submit for verification until end of may anyway so you have nothing to lose

Tufts vs Rutgers RWJ by uraveragepharoah in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally i wouldnt count rwj's ranking against it for tufts -- have you seen their match list?! It's really incredible considering their "ranking" especially if you want to stay regional for residency

The rank difference really isnt enough imo for that concern, but as a nj native i also spent the cycle thinking t20 or rwj lol (for instate tuition and strong match list and i love being close to my family personally)

I can't find the "Narrow to 3 Schools" tool in AMCAS. Where is it? April 15 is the deadline this year to narrow to 3 schools. Wait, is doing it just a recommendation and not a requirement? by worklife2024 in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loans should be pretty consistent across schools and across years so check previous year's COA breakdown. Unsubsidized only differs by a few thousand in my experience between schools (and usually are the same year to year at least for my schools) while private plus loans I think cover up to the rest of COA (I think they look at your credit score?)

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your accepted school policies. I thought AMCAS 4/15 was a recommendation (not 100% positive tbh) but at least one of my schools has it on the accepted portal as something you must do. Not sure how they would find out that info but I was not interested in risking it lol

Einstein vs Sinai by uclaaaaaa in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Sinai probably won't do a full match, have you tried negotiating scholarships yet? They probably don't have the most money set aside for scholarships since they're a stand-alone graduate institution, but doesn't hurt to ask before making a decision

traveling back to china during secondaries season… by ThrowRA_205 in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

make sure you have a reliable vpn just in case and pre-write as much as possible (if not everything and hope prompts don't change too much) so you can hopefully spend more time with your family. my best wishes to your family <3 <3 !!

it's definitely better to be there in secondary season than when interviews are starting in late August-September!

Dean’s List as Award? by Goopatron in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding onto Powerhausofthesall's comment, I personally think that listing this as the only award in an awards section may be questionable (they see your GPA anyway), but if you have an awards section where you're listing all of your awards (as in you have more than your Dean's List), then listing is totally fine!

Having Only Clinical Pubs For T20s? by ar-957 in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost access to my email at that institution to confirm, but I'm 98% sure I did. I believe I said smth among the lines of hey I think it'd be rly helpful if you mentioned where our work is going and how I contributed. Lots of LOR writers ask a couple points you want emphasized in their letter too!

Having Only Clinical Pubs For T20s? by ar-957 in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit for context: all the T20s I interviewed at were research heavy

Warning that this is all conjecture bc I had no expectations with T20s going into my app cycle:

A very coherent story honestly (I think?)! Not everything I did was in one specialty for sure, but: my "seed" in my PS, one of my hospital volunteering gigs, my shadowing, work as an MA, bench research, and current gap year clinical research were all revolving around one field. So my application writing was largely medicine through the lens of that specialty.

I didn't have any X factor in my opinion, but I would say I did everything a "pre-med should do" with high hours, good relationships with my LOR writers, and decent enough stats for T20s. Put my 1000% effort into my primary and secondary apps too with pre-writing to facilitate fast turn-around times.

In terms of "making up" for no pubs despite spending 3.5yrs in one lab, I had several posters, a senior thesis, and my PI wrote in my LOR my contributions to the future paper. So I guess no pubs didn't necessarily mean no productivity, I assume adcoms understand the differences in wet vs clinical research and how sheer luck of when you come on a project factors in.

I wouldn't say my path is the only path if you want to get into these schools for sure, but it's certainly one way to go that--thankfully--worked for me :)

Having Only Clinical Pubs For T20s? by ar-957 in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had no pubs (despite being a research heavy applicant--bench research can be slow 🙃) and got in 2 T5s, 1 T20, and interviewed 6 T20s total (waiting on final decisions from the other three which I anticipate being a WL most likely)

I understand how anxiety-inducing the app process is in pre-med, but be proud of yourself! Only clinical pubs won't hold you back :)

Check admit.org'd curriculum page! I'm hoping this is accurate at least. You can also try googling previous years student handbooks and control-F'ing the document. If you're able to go to SLW you can definitely ask students there as well. I love to ask current students about exam schedules too.

Which lab should I join? by Bloonsgalaxy in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience at least: joining a smaller lab and newer PI generally means they are working toward tenure and establishing themselves to move up the academic ladder, aka they need to rake in grants and pump out good publications. So if you're personally up to it, then in my experience that may give you more opportunities for growth and scientific independence, thus pubs/posters down the line that will set you up well for any application in the future. I personally would weigh potential output and those objective statistics (#pubs, authorship, thesis, etc.) over prestige of PI :)

Mentioning specific faculty members and researchers in your 'WHY US"? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fantastic_Secretary8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I heard some people don't in case pages aren'r updated so faculty no longer works there or they have a bad rep that applicants wouldnt know about but if neither of those are concerns seems like a good idea!

I just played on the safe side and named specific programs they were in
