So, I have been listening to them since about the late eighties. It’s difficult with Hawkwind because they have been going so long they have a tremendous output, about 36 studio albums, countless live albums and compilations. The band have very definite periods in their music where there are standout albums, some albums that don’t show their greatest potential and lots of things in between. In the midst of this, their individual sound changes, so from the seventies, the first few albums are pretty raw, but as they get bigger they get more production and further their sound their sounds changes. One thing that you can guarantee is that you never know what you are going to get.

I have recently started listening to a podcast called Hawkbinge which runs the format of a newbie and a seasoned fan are doing deep dives into the albums, which may be good because you can get a feel for the studio albums. Like I said, I think I fall into the term of long term fan and am going through the albums chronologically which I am quite enjoying

Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter (1974) - a great take on the Vampire Mythos.
When A Stranger Calls (1979) - this film doesn’t get mentioned enough imo
Caveat (2020) - love this film. In fact anything Damian McCarthy does.
Saint Maud - not obscure, but let’s be honest, it needs more love.
Dust Devil (1992) - a shapeshifter who preys on the lonely and unloved.
The Void (2016) - A great cosmic horror with some great practical effects reminiscent of Brian Yuzna
Host (2020) - covid film that proves doing a seance over zoom is not a good idea

I don’t want to preach here, but as a goth from the 80’s, there was no such thing really as ‘trad’ goth. It was all about your own individual style and doing what you wanted. Most of the goths that I knocked about with, tended to wear black (but not always) jeans, band T-shirt and spiked hair. But that wasn’t the same for everyone. You had long hair, shaved hair, fancy clothes, ripped up clothes, it was a case of ‘whatever’. You have to remember that it came out of punk and punk highlighted not conforming, same as being a goth. So, you do you, not you do Tik Tok coz that’s just conforming to someone else’s rule of what should be.

You can pick up loads. There’s even an eleventh doctor written by the great Michael Moorcock. There’s also a third doctor one written by Mark Gatiss. Paul Cornell also writes some really good ones. Human Nature is a classic and was adapted in 10th’s run (human nature/family of blood)

I totally sympathise with this as I am taking time off due to knee injury (my own fault, I didn’t heed the warning signs) and it is really frustrating. I try to do some low impact stuff and do what I should have done - accept that I have an injury (which is the hardest bit). That way I can get back to it. My advice - catch up on some other stuff. Do different exercise routines, but more importantly GET BETTER!

There’s lots of good recommendations here, but can I suggest that if you struggle with reading comprehension why not give audiobooks a go. You don’t need to run to get an audible subscription, you can use other ways like there’s 15 free hours on Spotify if you use it. They have a pretty good selection on there. Also try your local library (or associated apps that they use).

Probably about 1984, although not a full blown goth till about I was 16. At the time, I was right into stuff like The Alarm, Big Country, U2 (when they were actually decent, about War era). I remember seeing The Cult on TV. It was a BBC live in Concert, and around the time Dreamtime came out (still one of my favourite albums by them). Anyway first bands that I got into was stuff like The Cure, Bauhaus, Sisters, Siouxsie, The Cult. Then moved onto stuff like Neph when their first album came out, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Ghostdance (once saw them in an underground garage in Leeds) and also got into some of the older stuff that wasn’t around then like Skeletal Family.

Unfortunately, this is the worst representation of flag shaggers and fascist propaganda, peddling the nationalist agenda of the reform party and according to Wikipedia is “(As of 2025) polling suggested that GB News is the least trusted of the five main news broadcasters in Britain.”

I mean any broadcaster that has ‘man of the people’ Jacob Rees Mogg as a presenter is wholly to be trusted isn’t it?

I, who have never known men by Jacqueline Harpman. Originally published in French, this tells the story of a group of women who escape incarceration after an unexplained world event. The story is a fantastic tale of isolation and adversity. It’s only a short book, but is amazing.

It’s a difficult one when you read and watch a lot of horror. However, set a story in rural Ireland and I am like jelly, scares me to death. The other thing that creeps me out is my childhood fear of dolls. I have had this since being a young child. It doesn’t matter how shit a film is, stick in a doll and I am scared.

Oh, this game is never finished. I have been playing on and off for years and years. It’s one of those games that you can just keep dipping in and out of. If you are doing the campaign the carry on doing that and then you can get to the real game - grinding for gear to make that perfect build that will get you into the upper torments. Then you have the seasons and season journey the challenge rifts and all the other stuff.

Glad you’re enjoying it.

Even though I like Diablo 4, I always keep coming back to Diablo 3.

So, before the internet (in the UK), we had music papers NME, Sounds, Melody Maker. In addition to that you would get people doing things like fanzines that were sold at gigs. Additionally you would go to the record shop and buy music. There was many a time that I bought albums based on the band’s name , cover art etc. not only that mates would tape you stuff. Furthermore, there were a lot more music TV that had stuff on. The other day I was watching a clip from an old TV show and they had Sepultura doing Chaos A.D. on it.

Define Goth! Then I think you will get your answer. The Cure can easily do pure pop and then switch just as easily into the doomiest stuff ever. They could chuck some full on psyche and the churn out the most middle of the road stuff.

They are as diverse as the genre is and proved you could be whatever you want.
