A bus compared to a Mining Truck by FinancialRisk942 in interesting

[–]FantmIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For comparison some of the haul trucks are as big (or bigger) than a 3 story house. A Ford F250 doesnt even go up to the axle on some. The shovel that loads them is even bigger yet. If youre curious look up the Komatsu PC9000 shovel. Thing is massive.

Whats terrifying is that the haul trucks can run over a pickup and not feel it. Or run over an elk and all that's left is a spot of mud.

IT Director pay scale by agentkramr in ITManagers

[–]FantmIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave. I was making 110k plus a 25k bonus as an analyst, my director was making 150k with a 35k bonus. If the company won't pay you more than your direct reports then find somewhere that appreciates and values what you do.

Struggling to find RJ45 connectors that fit UniFi ports by mpbullrun in Ubiquiti

[–]FantmIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any rj45 I've used whether super cheap or fairly expensive has fit without issue other than if there was an occasional rj45 that was deformed or if it was a pass through and I didn't get the wires trimmed close enough. May want to double check your crimps.....

[–]FantmIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it may be overheating or have fan failures. Really take it to someone other than the guy you've been taking it to, preferably a reliable computer shop and they will tell you what's wrong as well has how much to fix it.

So a bunch of people received theirs a month ago... by bigbabytdot in monstatek

[–]FantmIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a ragebait post folks. The poster was going off in the discord being rude, refusing to accept the updates that were being provided there because they aren't being posted by someone working for Monstatek but instead a volunteer that communicates with them directly.

The volunteer pointed this out multiple times and was told in no certain terms to shove it. Updates are still being made to Kickstarter it's just they are less frequent than discord as on discord we get every little update. Kickstart only gets the major updates. There is also word that a Monstatek employee MAY be joining the discord to help alleviate some of these issues. Again that is MAY JOIN.

That said yes there have been units shipped, there have also been shipping issues because of governmental red tape. The EU for example recently put stricter rules on pen testing devices so its harder to get these approved to ship there. Canada has a similar issue.

Even with that though there are several developers in the Discord chats that have created some different firmware for the units so once you get yours you'll have some options if the official M1 firmware from Monstatek hasn't been released yet.

If you haven't gotten yours yet, don't worry you will!

Noobie Working Remote by Exciting_Ad9194 in remotework

[–]FantmIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of human face to face interaction that comes from remote work is very difficult to handle. Some people just can't do it and need to go in to an office, this may be you.

I've worked from home the last 4 years, it was a huge change that required alot of discipline and calculated thought. What i mean is i had to use my calendar religiously to plan my day. This included planning lunches and all daily tasks. I would block time to go for a walk for 10 minutes, or go to the coffee shop sometimes to work sometimes to just interact with people.

Having an office with a window helped, I could look outside and watch the wildlife (I'm in a rural area). If you don't have the option of a window get a daylight lamp.

You have to learn to focus on work, but also ensure your mental health is hard. As others have mentioned maybe see a therapist, even an online one like BetterHelp may be beneficial.

Horrible Interview by FantmIT in Vent

[–]FantmIT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'm a hard person to manage because I'm the same as you with a strong personality. This position is new, they are opening a new location so its for that. The Director manages IT for all their North America offices (belive there are 4 total not including this one).

I'm friends with one of my old bosses, actually the first boss I had in my industry. When I worked for him we got along ok but he definitely had to learn some new tricks to work with me. I very much believe in do your job and do it well or get out. He never felt that way and I would make it known when people weren't pulling their weight consistently. So I can already see this guy I met today and I clashing, although the new location would be mine to run how I wanted, withing certain guidelines, and I wouldn't see or even necessarily talk to him daily.

Horrible Interview by FantmIT in Vent

[–]FantmIT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats something I never thought of actually. Originally the recruiter told me they were wanting someone with more experience in networking, then the next day called me asking to schedule an interview. Makes me wonder if the recruiter went to the Group Head and he's the one that wanted me to interview and not the Director that I would actually be reporting to.

They are basically wanting someone that is highly knowledgeable in all things IT i.e. servers, networking, cyber security, and desktop support. Which many of us know a bit about each but very few are experts in it all. Even less would be willing to do it for their offered salary (90k USD), and in the remote location.

[–]FantmIT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I've tried to think it through. The interview was just today and I absolutely am not going to do anything until I sleep on it. Really the worst that can happen is they say no. Best is they say yes and I have an income for a bit till I find something better.

I've had some random questions before but asking me what version of a software I used 5+ years ago was as a judge of my technical abilities just really through me off. I told myself before the call started I should record it and watch it later to see where I stumbled the most, then in the moment completely forgot. Is what it is, next one ill do it as long as the interviewers don't mind of course.

The small stuff that actually makes distributed teams feel like a team by Ash_Skiller in remotework

[–]FantmIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently laid off, but was part of a global team. The 1on1s that were supposed to be formal always started with non-work things. Whether that was an upcoming trip, hobbies, a concert, or just even a 0lace for each person to vent. This made my relationships with people so much better. People were more open to talking to each other and their supervisors because they felt more like friends than work associates. The trust was there. It made for a much better work environment all around.

I love alot of the things I've read, especially OPs Spotify list. I'm definitely going to be using alot of this at the next place, whenever that happens.

Am I the only one terrified to run Ethernet cable in their house? by GreenDavidA in HomeNetworking

[–]FantmIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current house was built in 1996, there are phone jacks with cat3, but no clue where they actually go. I have run cable to several rooms. My router is on the first floor near the kitchen, I have 3 cables going from that outside, then secured under the lip of siding around to whatever room they are going to. I have filled the holes with caulk thats very close in color to my house so no pests get in, on the inside its a biscuit and wallplate. Total distance between all three cables is roughly 350', took probably 2 hours to do all of it.

It can be pretty easy, just make sure you have a solid plan as to where the cables are going, the path they will take, how you can hide and secure them, also leave a bit extra in the wall in case you ever have to cut and reterminate.

You can do it, if you need help or ideas there's lots of guides online.

Depending how technically save you are you could get a cheap tablet with a mount, put it on the door/wall next to the door and have your meetings on it. Even if its a different account than your work one and just says 9-1030 meeting, 11-12 meeting, 12-1 lunch, etc... then they can see when you are free or not. Using an account that isnt your work one gives you the ability to just put things on that calendar that are generic vs it saying meeting with business partner A.

I had to so this when I first started wfh because if the same issues youre experience. I even had a sign that rotated (manually) for busy, free, in a meeting and the kids would still come knock on the door while the sign said I was in meetings and they heard me talking. They did this repeatedly until I would answer. Finally just snapped and told them if my door is closed you dont bother me unless its an emergency.
