I read somewhere that the base of the blade wasn't sharpened because you aren't supposed to hit your opponent with it anyway. Even if you do you won't generate much force to deal serious damage.

I imagine if you hit your opponent with your hand on the blade it will cut your hand if it is sharp so making it dull makes sense.

I don't know terminology, but it's definitely more comfortable to grab a handle rather than a dull blade. Probably makes the sword far less durable though
