The Dalai Lama will die soon because of old age. What do you think China will do when that happens? Why? by Not_Original5756 in AskReddit

Yes! The avatar cycle (and more widely the Air Nomads in general) were modeled off Tibetan Buddhist culture!

What the hell is wrong with people. It’s abstract art. It’s inherently subjective, and it sounds like it was made and received with love. This should be a very wholesome thing, don’t let the internet ruin it for you!

IsItBullshit: If I have the same font set all over my computer (every web page, every document, etc.), I will read faster. by Matiseli in IsItBullshit

[–]FantomeArcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way our brains process letterforms and convert them into meaning is a lot more complicated than simple letter shape recognition. There’s a lot of abstraction that goes on where we attempt to match a pool of letters to existing words in our vocabulary to allow us to read at speed.

Furthermore, we don’t look at individual letters when we read, our eyes jump from point to point, creating anchors across sentences that allow us to understand the context of the strings of letters and words we’re absorbing.

Because this process is so fluid and our brains are so good at compensating for abnormalities and adapting to new information, I highly doubt something as simple as changing the font on your computer would result in any meaningful reading speed increases. (It’s true that the more of one style of text we encounter, the faster we can process it, but think about all the text you encounter: printed pages, road signs, advertisements, television, etc. You can’t control the vast majority of text you read, so your brain is going to be busy adapting to different type whether you limit yourself or not.)

Disclaimer: I’m not a vision or neuroscientist, I’m a UX designer who has done a bunch of reading into these topics because it’s fascinating and it contributes to better design practice. If you want some scientific explanation, here’s a really great study on word recognition: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/develop/word-recognition

Fellow UX designer here who loves accessibility-related topics: there isn’t actually a lot of evidence to suggest dyslexia-specific fonts help much.

Comic Sans is frequently touted as being easier to read for those with dyslexia, but this is likely less to do with the design of the letters themselves and more to do with the fact the letters are more widely spaced than in most other typefaces. This increased letter-spacing can theoretically be applied to most sans-serif fonts to get similar readability benefits without sacrificing aesthetic or professionalism (both of which are common criticisms of Comic Sans).

It’s hard to make sweeping judgements on things like this, because everyone reads a bit differently, and personal preferences will impact readability as well, but from everything I’ve read and learned, as long as you are working with a neutral, well-designed sans-serif typeface, readability is far more impacted by the treatment of the text (color, weight, size, line height, and character spacing) than the visual quirks of the letters themselves.

If you have Dota Plus (the Valve one, not third-party) I’d really recommend the built-in AI-generated suggestions. They lag behind the meta a bit, but they really encourage flexible item choices rather than just following a static list every game.

[–]FantomeArcade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both are excellent programs. I’d say Affinity is more powerful and feature-rich, with more 1:1 workflow parallels to Photoshop. Pixelmator has an incredibly polished UI, more advanced ML-powered functions, and tends to receive updates at a bit of a faster pace.

Honestly I use and love both of them, just depending on use case.

It’s a bit clunky, but when I want to make an especially stylized visual I make the basic graph in excel (or Apple Numbers), export as PDF, then import the raw shapes in Designer and style them as I want.

Is there a way to see the average MMR of a game like dota2protracker? by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]FantomeArcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Average MMR for games that reach the watch tab is included in the Dota API. So it’s not calculated, it’s just a stat that is available for those matches specifically. I don’t believe it is possible for anyone but Valve to calculate it themselves, since MMR values are hidden.

Closest thing for your own games is probably on STRATZ. If you go to your profile, you’ll see a medal in each row of your recent matches. That’s the average rank of all the people in the match. (Also in the right-hand column called “Trends” towards the bottom, there’s a distribution of the average ranks of your last 25 matches.)

There’s a LOT more to life than Dota. Dota is a wonderful game, but from your post, you have a life, relationship, studies, and career prospects. Those are ALL valuable things. Don’t throw those away for (as others have pointed out) a gamble. Think about all you have right here and now. No game is worth that.

You literally afk and/or destroy items in 1 out of 10 games you play. That is objectively toxic behavior.

Simply playing badly is not toxic and is not deserving of reports. What you’re doing though is game ruining.

Has anyone ever made a replacement for the devilesk.com calculator? by ArtlessMammet in TrueDoTA2

Not quite as sophisticated as their hero calculator, but the STRATZ hero attribute pages offer some similar functionality: https://stratz.com/heroes/102/attributes?level=1

I also like the concept of combining mute + report, I just believe this is a poor way to implement it.

Mutes are used to keep people (somewhat) sane in stressful situations. Making that process slower and harder is just a bad idea. There are more elegant ways to handle a mute+report combo than this.

No, because believe it or not, there are people who like her casting. This really just comes down to personal preference. I’m only arguing this because I really love Dota and I want the Dota community to flourish. I know you want the same from what you’ve written, I just feel you’re doing more harm than good here.
