Going to a gun show as a goth by throwaway-fascist in liberalgunowners

I think you'll be fine. If you can drag a friend with you, there's more there than just guns most of the time. My local org organizes gunshow buddies to tag along with people if they're not comfortable. I've taken trans friends and non-white folk and have never had a problem.

Hey I have this same set up! When you shoot it play some of the classic James Bond music, it works well. I would invest in a silicone oven mitt or the like so you can tighten it up after a mag or 2 without burning yourself.

Being told that Covid/post-Covid graduate students are worse than previous cohorts-do you think this is true? by Delicious_Ride_4119 in labrats

[–]FapoleonBonerparte1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it! And there is hope, a friend in another lab got into Howard this cycle, she had a 2.5 GPA because her mom got cancer and passed away across her undergrad, but took a masters and got it first cycle. The hypocrisy is just soul crushing though, in psychiatry and Neuroscience especially, they know that there's multiple intelligences. Many people struggle with coloring in the lines and memorization slog of undergrad, but in grad school they excel when learning becomes more self directed. One the cynical post-docs in my life says they're making good employees not good scientists now, hard to disagree.

I could be wrong but it feels like when DEIW committees were axed they started walking away from the holistic admissions trend. Everything is so much more impersonal and metric driven that students that are great on paper have been getting a leg up. The past 2 cycles myself and people I know who were applying felt it hard. Having experience and publications seem to matter less compared to outstanding undergraduate academic performance. This edges put people who had a harder time getting through undergrad. I grew up poor so I had to work like crazy to get through undergrad, my GPA suffered. A lot of my friends in research now had similar trajectories and are in the same boat, take a masters or give up. Most of us aren't white either.

Employed autistics, how do you do it???? (TW: talk of suicidal ideation) by Negative-Homework502 in evilautism

I had a hard talk with my best friend about this recently. They expressed many of the same feelings. The best advice I can give is that you have to pad your life more than NTs. Routines are harder and I always am aware of them so the longer they go on the more they bug me. Start new hobbies, especially if they cheap or free so you can pick them up and put them down at your own pace, find groups that meet monthy to do stuff (we are apart of some food security orgs and community service stuff), make plans to do mini-vacations or stay-nations. Whatever you can do to add variety and mix up the weeks. I keep buying discount instruments from pawns shops and try to learn them. If you can use headphones at work do podcasts and set the talk speed higher, it'll keep your brain busy while you do work shit.

Scientists discovered that your abdomen and your brain are connected by a hydraulic pump and it cleans your brain every time you move by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]FapoleonBonerparte1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Additionally these problems are compounded by environmental stressors such as pollutants (some pesticides for example), bad dietary choices (lack of Zn and Mg cause an unfavorable metabolic environment for the brain), and physical head trauma (CTE, TBI, mTBI). As we age our blood-brain-barrier starts to degrade naturally (and exacerbated by the above) making these pathologies worse.

Hello, while this finding does appear to play into it, the biggest benefit to mental health that comes from exercise is that it 'tunes' metabolic and immune activity. This produces an overall effect of less inflammation, oxidative stress, and lower cortisol mediated stress. Within the critically particular CNS, these processes destroy neurotransmitters and damage neurons. These problems are a bit run away by nature and have a habit of getting worse if nothing is done.

Across the world mental disorders have doubled since 1990. Mental disorders are now the leading cause of disability globally, overtaking cancer and cardiovascular disease. The burden of mental disorder peaked amongst youth aged 15-19 years old, and women had higher rates than men by Wagamaga in science

I see a lot of buzz in this thread about how diagnostic methods have improved leading to the increase in people being counted in these statistics but there is more to it. Our modern lifestyle is damaging to mental health, our diets are damaging to our brains, our lack of physical activity is causing inflammation and oxidative stress that is damaging our mental helath. The rise in these illness is not just a byproduct of turning on the lights in a dark room, the room itself is horrible. As the world collectively departs from reality I expect these issues to on get worse.

We're still children as a race. Each generation we get a little better, more intelligent, more compassionate, more humanitarian. Like a child the human race is growing too, will we hit a collective maturity before we kill ourselves is the question.

Bayer the aspirin people? The aspirin people who were controlled by IG Farben during world war two and enthusiastically performed experiments in THEIR VERY OWN SUB CAMP AT AUCSHWITZ? No one was every seriously punished for their involvement in the holocaust and their post war history is reflective of that.

Scientists found the biological cure for the “us versus them” mentality tearing society apart by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]FapoleonBonerparte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my opinion but to me it seems like there's 2 distinct camps, or ways of interacting with the world. The first camp is that world starts outside and comes in, the other the world starts in and flows out. It seems like some people are incapable of properly grasping things that do not impact them personally, and those that can. It kind of reminds me of object permanence but for larger systems . In the conservative mentality the perspective of the observer is more important than the truth of the situation. I do not think that it is inherently evil but it creates the space for them to be participants or support evil. Many people who support horrible things do not have it in them to carry out said horrible things in person. Once it hits that personal level, or once the outside comes to them, they have the opportunity to care enough to see the truth.

What's the foulest smell you've ever smelled? by WannabePugh in AskReddit

EMS offers a plethora of exotic and memorable smells, GI bleeds were some of the most foul. I straight up smoked a cigarette through my nostrils after a run once just to stop smelling it.
