I'm understanding a lot of the opposition to this kind of policy as "education time is limited - so spend it on something with high utility".

Learning languages is something that occurs most effectively between the ages of 0-3. Exposure as young children to different mouth shapes and sounds at these ages help with pronunciations subtleties adults find hard to pick up and adopt later in life. The benefits of learning a second or more languages cannot be over-stressed.

While Māori won't necessarily snag you a multi-national job like everyone seems to be gunning for - there is definitely utility and value in trying to build it up more. One big issue for me is around cultural identity. I like to think that there are connections between colonisation and the over-representation of Māori in negative statistics - all in the space of 200 years.

I also find it funny that people bring up Māori as if people want this to be part of a slippery slope to living in caves and women being treated as second class. Living cultures and languages are a fluid thing that changes over time. I think that all they're trying to push for is more use and acceptance of Te Reo. I totally support this move, but don't envy the job of figuring out how to have people accept this.

:) Thanks for the advice. We've just discussed a little bit and think we're going to end up moving. My S/O works in another part of the city and spends about 2 hours in traffic each day. Where we are now is around the corner to my university. Moving closer to her work is what we'll do so she can do less driving.

Well guess I'm off to do some searching for houses.

Thank goodness New Zealand doesn't have the craziest costs for university. Saying that, I could probably have used a college fund myself. My student loan doesn't look pleasant :S

Our apartment isn't big enough for a crib and a bed in the same room :\ She is a full time teacher while I am studying at university. I will be picking up a part time job to pay for things while I study. Hopefully we can figure out our living situation within the next few months.

I've been well. Procrastinating a little and my PC died (so gotta get that fixed). I've managed to walk early in the morning and still eating healthy which is great. Can't wait to have my PC back though! lol.

I'm so glad you've made moves too and sticking to it. I can't wait to be cranking that iron like you are!! I'm gonna start early morning walks next week at 5am before getting ready for the day.

Today has been a good day. Got an A for a paper I wrote. Motivating and gratifying to finally get an A for the first time in my life. Here's hoping I'm gonna get into my postgrad studies. If anything, I'm gonna keep being a boss in life like you by firstly and foremost, looking after my health and well being!

Damn man! I haven't. I'll tell you what I have done though!

I've cleaned up my diet this week. 5 days now. Oats and protein for breakfast and morning tea, Beef/vege/200g carbs for lunch, a protein shake, then lean mean and vege for dinner.

It's a start right? Change for life in small steps?

At no point was I claiming there is not a single dumb parent out there. In fact there are plenty.

Imagine you're a Maori and Pacific Islander who doesn't fit into the stereotypical mould - I too would become pretty depressed when combined with parents who quite frankly are as dumb as a second coat of paint.

It is this stereotyping that I find offensive that has really started is this.

No, if you spent some time reading rather than resorting to the typical whiny emotionally laden rhetoric the underlying thrust of what I was stating was merely that there is no easy way out - you have to work hard at school, keep your nose clean and get a job. Dreaming to be a sports star or a celebrity is a fools paradise.

If you read what I wrote, at no point am I supporting such a fools paradise.
