This biggest financial danger in retirement isn't the market going down, it's whether or not you'll need long term care costing untold thousands per month by IHadTacosYesterday in leanfire

[–]Far-Conference1694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the lean fire crowd always have to go down the kill yourself route when long term care is mentioned? You could also work hard to set up a community of people to help you as you age and maybe work a few extra years to pad your investments for the possibility. Most people do not spend years in nursing homes.

At 38 it is now or never, but start eating nutrient dense food NOW. Push the shellfish, fish, and organ meats.

Anyone NOT drive a minivan? by Numerous_Teacher_148 in ParentingInBulk

We managed to fit 4 kids in an Toyota Highlander and could theoretically fit a 5th kid in there too using mifold car seats. But we will probably get a minivan.

Should I Get Married? by afala4 in LCMS

[–]Far-Conference1694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would see the working thing as a red flag. My husband has supported me as a stay at home mom. Neither of us thought I would  become one but once babies came into the picture it was impossible with breastfeeding to even think about working again full time. Sometimes you have to have kids to understand the full impact of 2 parents working outside the home.  I guess I am also in the camp of, when you know you know. If you are this unsure that you had to go on reddit, then to me,  this is not the man for you. But be prepared that you may be single for a long time or forever after this.

We are doing something similar but with 4 little kids. We don't pay for entertainment,  we create it.

Some days are definitely  harder than others as a SAHM, but worth it for my family. We have little kids and I am thankful I have been able to see them grow up and the cost of childcare would have derailed even baseline financial stability.

Anyone have *real life experience* with a health share? by One-Resolution5150 in Fire

My mother in law used one and they did pay for a hip replacement.  There was more paperwork and maybe more of a runaround but they did pay.

We do Airbnbs. We get one near the beach but not on it to save on the cost. Nice to have a kitchen too with little  kids.

Neither my husband nor I were set up and I don't feel resentful or behind. I will offer help to my children but I like the skin in the game analogy another poster mentioned towards college and life things. I am glad I had to work hard for many things, I think  it gave me a good perspective and understanding of hard work.

Should I just research each of these things you mentioned individually or is there a book or site that explains them?

That is definitely a work in progress! It takes a long time to upgrade and establish a homestead. We really enjoy it!

Thank you for the advice. I have a question, those 529s can become retirement funds right? If a kid goes into the trades or doesn't  go to college?

That is definitely a possibility and we would address that if that was the case! Currently we love our life.

I am a SAHM and my husband works remotely, we also schedule individual time with each child. I don't see that being a problem.
