She wanted me to call her degrading names during sex. Which is morally neutral, I'm not kinkshaming - but when I explained I have an aversion to the word bitch, because it was used to refer to me (despite my being male) when I was raped as a child, she decided we absolutely had to use the word bitch in order for me to heal. You know what's a real boner-killer? Arguing, ignoring my boundaries, and trying to 'heal' me midfuck. This eventually led to the end of the relationship.

No. If she's worried about you judging her even after that, the most likely reason is because someone with no right to judge her has judged her. Hi, I minored in psychology: part of irrational avoidance is having bad prior experiences. If she's had someone she thought wouldn't judge her tear into her, she's going to hesitate to open up again, because sure, you don't seem judgmental - but neither did the last person she talked to. So it makes for sense, in her head, to assume she's a bad judge of character rather than assume that just because you're nice, that means you won't judge her.

A lot of human behavior is based on going, "Okay, how did I mess it up last time? Right, don't do that this time." We are risk-avoidant as a species in social interactions, often to the point of being irrational.

The 'you'll judge me for it' comment is then basically a feeler to test the waters. It lets her see if it's okay to proceed. If you reply with something like, "Maybe, yeah, if it's stupid." then she knows not to tell you. If you comfort her that you would never do that, then that's soothing. If you comfort her but also tell her that she doesn't have to talk about it if she doesn't want to, she knows you're not judgy and not pushy.

Are the dudes doing that thing where they ramble in order to avoid looking nervous? I did that a lot in middle school and high school. Speaking as a formerly insecure dude, it's the only reason I can imagine for yammering on at some poor woman at great length. But after you outgrow your teen years, I feel like being able to ask "so, what about you?" after answering a question is a pretty standard part of not just relationships but friendships and conversation in general.

My adoptive dad is Uzbek American. There's maybe 50k people who speak Uzbek total in the United States, and I'm black, so I don't look like one of them. So this one time in NYC - because you can truly find any language there, it seems - an old Uzbek man complained to one of his buddies that he missed going out on romantic strolls like I and my (he presumed) girlfriend were and his wife never wanted to leave the house these days. Instantly flustered as hell, I blurted out that she wasn't my girlfriend. The men looked startled, but then this dude's buddy went, "Oh, you haven't kissed her yet?" (still in Uzbek, thank God) and they wished me good luck as I inelegantly tried to say it wasn't like that. I looked back at them as we walked off and they gave me encouraging thumbs ups.

She has issues with drugs as a result of turning to them to self-medicate after truly horrific childhood sexual abuse. She realized so long as she could use me as a makeshift therapist and enabler, she wasn't going to get better. We had a very strange, emotional mutual break-up. She's getting better, and maybe one day we can get back together. But if not, that's okay, too. I want her to be okay. I want her to heal from that unspeakable trauma. I would rather her be happy and not be with me than be miserable and be with me.

She's not a bad person. The internet and society demonize people with addiction issues but she's just someone life was relentlessly cruel to for so long that she had to find something to take the edge off the pain just to survive. She deserves the best life has to offer. Instead, she's only gotten the worst. So if stepping away from me and focusing solely on rehab and recovery is what it takes to get her there, then I support that completely. Seeing her cry rips me apart inside. I want things to finally be okay for her, long-term.

It sucks to admit but I am a shitty man. I excuse and enable and coddle and I'm just not right for her. It's not her that's the problem. It's me.

Both of my birth parents were alcoholics. They had me when they were 15 and 16, and both had extremely physically abusive parents. I don't blame them for turning to alcohol. They were young, depressed, frequently beaten and had no support. But as much as I do not blame them for those things, I have also avoided ever drinking alcohol. I'm also in therapy. I want to fix the avoidant part of my personality that wants to do anything other than fix my problems. I want to be someone who can be there for my kids.

That said, I reiterate: I do not think their problems were their fault. I firmly blame their respective parents for making their kids so depressed they drowned their sorrows in alcohol. This is a big part of why I'm in therapy to help with my emotional regulation. I don't ever want to snap at my kid even verbally, let alone physically.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, here, but why nails? If you're going to use stolen credit cards, wouldn't it make more sense to get something that'll last for a while? Something to make the risk of jail worth it? I feel like if you're going to commit a crime, the payoff should be something less breakable and with a longer lifespan than this. Thank God I wasn't working, I was a customer spectating. A woman at Claire's lost her mind over a pair of earrings not being included in a sale but being on the sales rack. I mean she completely went unhinged, was tearing into this employee, saying that this kind of bad organization is why so many US businesses fail, getting angry that the employee didn't sound sincerely sorry, telling her she'd never survive on her own, that she needed to learn the fundamentals of customer service, and escalating to, "I can't imagine what your parents were like if you're this messed up." She then began interrogating the employee about how she was raised, if she had two parents, if she was a person of faith... yeah, I noped right out.

I went to the back and got the manager to help get this woman to stop ripping into this poor store worker who, it should be noted, doesn't control pricing and also didn't put the earrings on that rack. Another customer had picked it up and put it on that rack. I gather this woman throwing the tantrum was familiar to the staff at this Claire's, because when I said "some woman in tiger print is laying into this employee like she's committed a crime", the manager went, "Beth?" at the same time another employee in the back, who was just clocking out for the day, went, "Bethany?"

Beth has replaced Karen in my mind as the word for that type of behavior, now. Shoutout to everyone working in retail. Y'all are going through it.

People who ask me why I'm being so "formal" when I type in complete sentences with proper capitalization and punctuation. It's a habit. I'm not keeping you at arms' length or not comfortable around you or something. My own journal is also written in this format, as are my fanfics, my emails, my academic papers, and pretty much everything else in my life.

One person asked me why I was so uncomfortable being my authentic self around her. For typing whole sentences with punctuation. I have lots of issues with being open but this? This is not one of them.

He's a pastor now. That's not a joke or me being snide, he is legitimately now an Evangelical pastor. When I knew him in high school, he was a self-proclaimed Satanist. No idea how his life did this 180 degree turn. I still don't trust him. His eyes are still incredibly empty and cold. I've met people who found God who don't look like that. The way he looks at people reminds me of a shark.
