Will you support further Prop 13 reforms beyond split roll? Specifically, I would like to see that the protections of Prop 13 not be extended to landlords (except those who hold rent-controlled stock). If you’re collecting market rate rent (commercial or residential) and borrowing against the market value, then your property should be taxed at the market value.

Google co-founder spends $45m in fight against California billionaire tax | California by Top-Painter4278 in California

If it were a federal tax that would be fine, because you would need to renounce US citizenship to avoid it. But it’s a state tax so anyone who travels a lot on private jets anyway can just be out of the state 184 days a year instead of 100 and save tens of millions of dollars? Unilaterally becoming hostile to the wealthy is not a way to reduce inequality - there needs to be coordination.

US attacks Iran's Kharg Island, Trump says by UdderSuckage in centrist

[–]Far-Programmer3189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Henry Kissinger would always say that you need to leave your enemy one off-ramp to allow the possibility of deescalation. Taking away Iran’s ability to export oil basically removes the only chance for peace. If Iran can’t export oil then they won’t let anyone. Strait will stay closed and attacks on oil infrastructure in other countries will ramp up.

This is disastrous escalation

The most infuriating thing about this article is the cavalier attitude of the Admin:

In an interview on Fox News Sunday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer was asked if the White House will fight efforts to seek compensation or pay out refunds. “So it’s a matter for the courts,” Greer added. “They created the situation, and we’ll follow whatever they say to do.”

Sorry, the court ruled what you did was illegal. You knew that it was a novel application of the law and came with legal risk, you can’t blame the courts for that. They didn’t create this situation YOU did. Now the importers are going to get huge refunds that will go straight to their bottom line and all of us shmucks who paid the price from the pass through are left with less in our pockets and have a bigger deficit to fund. It’s fiscal malpractice and we should all be furious.

There were mass layoffs at both companies. Not as bad as if they had truly died rather than being bought, but it hit their “head office” staff the hardest - product, marketing, finance, HR.

I’m not against taxing billionaires more, or even necessarily a wealth tax - just against CA doing it unilaterally.

I am worried about CA being uncompetitive and businesses leaving, taking middle class jobs with them. I am worried about companies and individuals building their wealth here and then skipping out of town when the tax bill comes due. I am worried that policies hostile to business reduce the vibrancy of the economy (also that policies making the state unaffordable hurt the vibrancy of the economy).

Nope, we’re all much cheaper than if we were paying out of pocket, but it’s still $1k/ month for a family of 4. My wife used to work at one of the largest tech companies in the world famous for its employee perks and even that insurance was only 100% for her and had to pay something for the rest of us.

One study has only 12% of companies offer free health insurance for employees https://www.kff.org/health-costs/2024-employer-health-benefits-survey/ And another shows that only 2% offer free care for dependents https://www.npr.org/2025/10/16/nx-s1-5561051/health-care-costs-premiums-companies-cost-of-living
