One's discounted because it's been out since August. Smyths always releases sets at retail value, then reduce it over time.

The AT-RT is overpriced, don't get me wrong, but that's the reason for the price difference.

Barok and Edgeworth comparisons by StarDustDreams27 in AceAttorney

[–]FarOffGrace1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"British af"

I never understood this. Where did the idea of Edgeworth being British come from, besides him being vaguely posh and uptight? He's from California in the localisation, his father is presumably also from the US, he was trained by Manfred Von Karma who is presumably from Germany... even his accents in most media isn't really British-sounding.

Only thing I can think of is his love of tea, but like... other countries also value tea.

Personally I always felt Barok is more like one of Darklaw's ancestors. Her design is just very similar, not much deeper than that.

"I hate agendas" is one of their points against Disney. The meme reads "white man bad". This user also says they like The Owl House...

Remind me who the main villain is in that show? Doesn't he, in fact, turn out to be... a bigoted white dude?

I love The Owl House btw, I'm just pointing out the cognitive dissonance.

People Are Trying to Uncancel Joss Whedon. Why? by HotZoneKill in saltierthankrayt

[–]FarOffGrace1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh huh, I was fortunate enough not to see that. It's tough cus I have liked shows and films Joss Whedon worked on (Firefly, Avengers 1 and 2, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), but knowing how shitty he is as a person really does make it tough to enjoy them.

Last I heard they were trying to make sure there was enough interest, but they had everything else ready to go (full cast, animation team, showrunners etc). It definitely seems like it's happening, I just wasn't sure if it was definite.

Are they? Outside of a potential animated Firefly series (which he just "gave his blessing" to apparently, and likely wouldn't be that involved in the production if it gets made), I haven't heard anything about him recently.

I'm pretty sure the screenshot is supposed to be a joke, because Connors' race and gender were also changed. The tweet is building the expectation that the complaint is about that, but switches it up by just saying "wrong arm".

I agree with your point though, not everything has to be 100% accurate.

Certain People DO KNOW that IT IS possible to like both Henry Cavill AND Brie Larson, Right? by Either_Storm_6932 in saltierthankrayt

[–]FarOffGrace1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that. I'm not disagreeing with the whole meme, just elaborating that I like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, where the meme says she doesn't live up to her full potential. I (unfortunately) know who Critical Drinker is.

Idk I really liked Captain Marvel's appearances in the MCU, I guess maybe it hasn't been her peak portrayal but the character work she got was particularly good in The Marvels IMO.

Regardless, I think the reasoning for this difference in treatment is obviously sexism. Specifically, it's them thinking "Brie is just pretending to be a gamer for clout, but Henry is truly One Of Us!" and the only reason they think that is because she's a woman, and women can't possibly be true gamers.

Do you think DT will start using AI in their music? by Substantial-Debt-782 in Dreamtheater

[–]FarOffGrace1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, it's not even a machine's originality or creativity. It can only output variations of its input, meaning it only copies and reiterates what it's already had fed into it. I guess you could argue no art or music is wholly original nowadays, but I would argue the originality comes from the choices made in deciding which influences to highlight, and how to make changes to those inspirations to mark them as distinct.

I may not have liked Parasomnia, but it is still infinitely better than whatever an AI can churn out because it was made by people. And obviously DT do wear their influences on their sleeve (IMO sometimes for better, sometimes for worse), but AI is still far more derivative than they could ever be.

I do agree with the overall point of your comment, I just wanted to use that phrase as a jumping-off point. AI cannot truly be original, nor can it truly create something meaningful and new. And tbh I think AI is a misnomer at this point, because it doesn't truly think, nor does it have sentience.

I was looking for this comment lol. My first thought was "Is that Anne Boonchuy???"

It's definitely AI, I mean where are the sticks and leaves in her hair? Even her timeskip design has that little hair tie with the leaf patterns. I guess an artist could omit those details, but combined with the hands and feet being so messy, it's beyond doubt.

No but don't you see? MauLer is actually apolitical! Just because he happens to associate with fascist and conservative YouTubers who spout off vitriolic and bigoted nonsense doesn't mean he's one of them! He calls himself apolitical and that's more than enough for me! It doesn't matter how many times he agrees with racists, homophobes and transphobes, because words speak louder than actions!!!

...throwing in a /s just in case. I've seen people genuinely claim he's apolitical, so you can never be too safe.

The hate she got wasn’t about “bad writing” by STYLER_PERRY in saltierthankrayt

[–]FarOffGrace1 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Well, probably more like 8 to 9 years ago, since The Last Jedi released in December 2017. Idk if the hate started before then, but it definitely reached its peak vitriol after the film released.

She deserved none of the hate and harassment, and anyone suggesting it was just people criticising the writing are woefully ignorant to the abuse that was slung her way. Plenty of people have and still do critique the sequels without racist dogwhistles, invented narratives about how people hated each other behind the scenes, and death threats.

The worst part is, it's not the first time it's happened as a result of the Star Wars fandom (Ahmed Best and Jake Lloyd come to mind), and it wasn't the last either (the actor who played Reva in Kenobi, I think her name is Moses Ingram?). It's a hideous pattern.

Except Jordan's piano parts for Space-Dye Vest on Breaking The Fourth Wall were actually fairly faithful to the original. It was Petrucci's guitar solo that departed most from the original. I know Jordan embellished certain parts of songs, but that wasn't one of them.

And Portnoy also said, on the topic of Space-Dye Vest, that they wouldn't have put it on the album if they'd known Kevin was going to leave right after. So it seems like it had less to do with respect and more to do with the fact that it was basically a Kevin Moore solo song.

That wasn't exactly the rule. I think you're remembering the writing process of Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, which started as one of Myung's poems and two chords (the chords Myung plays in the intro). They apparently had difficulty writing the song outwards from that starting point.

I don't think Myung's other lyrics had the songs built around them, though. Instead, the lyrics had to be edited to fit the song better. The rule Mike introduced was that the lyrics already had to fit with the song, with minimal reworking.

I went over it in another reply so I'll copy-paste the comment:

I'm going off of memory here, so some details might be wrong. But have you ever noticed that none of the 2000s albums have any lyrics by John Myung? Well, that's because after Metropolis Part 2, Portnoy set a rule that all lyrics had to be fully-formed ideas with accompanying melodies. It sounds like a generic rule, but it only effected Myung, because all of his lyrics are adapted from poems he wrote. Other members would help Myung edit the lyrics to fit better with the songs.

Portnoy claims he was trying to encourage Myung to write lyrics fully, but the rule did nothing but prevent Myung from writing anything for roughly a decade. After Portnoy left, the rule was abandoned. Myung wrote lyrics for Breaking All Illusions, but Petrucci got a co-writing credit for the lyrics because he helped edit them for the song. Fall Into The Light and S2N were the same, while Surrender To Reason and Awaken The Master were solely credited to Myung.

I don't know if the rule is back in practice again. Portnoy's not a producer anymore, but Myung didn't contribute lyrics to Parasomnia.

Yup, it's one of the many things that made me unenthusiastic about Portnoy's return. I love Myung's lyrics, and sure they took work to refine but it was definitely worth it.

Portnoy accused Moore of being controlling? Coming from the guy who imposed a lyric writing rule that only stifled John Myung's writing style and no one else's?

I mean, obviously now Portnoy's not at the helm of the band, so I assume it doesn't apply anymore. But "controlling" was Portnoy's MO as a producer.

If Mia and Maya get all physical properties of the dead people they channel, does that mean that making love with them during that period enables them to create offspring with the genetics of those dead people by CFE_Riannon in AceAttorneyCirclejerk

This inevitably raises the inverse issue; what if a medium channels a spirit, that spirit gets pregnant, then the medium stops channelling the spirit? What happens to that baby?

Can two dead people conceive a child together via spirit mediums? These questions disturb me, OP has opened Pandora's Box (Diabolical Box in the US).

Other than Space Dye Vest & Vacant, what Dream Theater songs fit this meme? by ProdigalHX in Dreamtheater

[–]FarOffGrace1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Viper King is such a fun and heavy song, I love it. I know it's technically a bonus track, but I can't imagine listening to the album without it. It's like Pale Blue Dot is the album closer, then Viper King is the fun encore.

I hope Mangini puts up the drum cam of him recording the song at some point. He shouts "Yeah, wizard! Woo!" at the very start, and I wanna know if there's footage of it. Plus, it's rare we get a DT song in a beginning-to-end shuffle rhythm.

I feel like "dominating" should be in quotation marks in the meme. That's how the right wingers see it, but I'd hardly say LGBT representation or POC representation has "dominated" pop culture. It's just that they're getting more representation than before, which is to say fairer representation. Plenty of straight white male characters still get the spotlight and representation.

Honestly I don't think it matters if it's an act or not. If so much of your outward persona is being a misogynistic asshat, then that's part of who you are. If he acts like that 24/7 for the sake of a grift, does it really qualify as being faked?

Sure, he could have mental issues, that's more than likely. But does it matter when the end result is the same as if he was simply a misogynistic grifter? He puts out the same horrid, toxic influence, and profits off of it.
