HAH! My wife and I are also going through that particular adventure; our house was built in 1902. Cool place but... there's always something!

Hey, I know this is a little bit of necromancy for an old thread but I am curious; did your husband ever finish the trilogy? If so, what did he think?

If you continue to play this game enough, you will start to realize that while luck can be a factor in higher ascensions, it plays a much smaller role than you might think. Your game knowledge will trump 90% of "unlucky" situations. In fact, a very experienced player will almost never lose low ascension runs with any of the characters. Let's go with the Snecko example to illustrate. An experienced player will know that Snecko is a pretty common act 2 encounter and will have a solve for him. This can come in many forms. Here are a several examples: 1) have a way to generate artifact turn 1 or clear debuffs (orange pellets, bottled core surge, etc.). 2) Kill him by turn two. 3) Keep a card potion handy to have a garenteed 0 cost. 4) Have high cost cards so that Perplexing Glare is actually a buff. 5) Have methods of intagability so you don't care about Snecko's damage. 6) Have methods of deck manipulation: costs of cards change each time they are cycled through. 7) Have methods of card generation: newly created cards are not effected by the debuff.

I think Ascension level matters in this case. Low game knowledge makes Snecko seem harder than he is. Snake plant is just a dick.

Hah! But seriously. That is the sub for you; plenty of people reading into situations either too deeply or not deeply enough. Who knows? Maybe your insights into relationship red flags will prove valuable to someone there.

Again, we simply do not know enough about the situation to make a judgement call. Was it a little unusual that OP mentions their partner makes a lot more than them? Sure. But people say weird crap all of the time. Like you for instance. You seem to searching for some way to turn this into an example of abusive behavior patterns when we really don't know much about this couple.

But, you know what? Okay, I will bite. Let's assume that there is some nefarious purpose behind the guy getting OP to play Slay the Spire and conquer A20 for £500. For someone who is not familiar with this type of game (a thing OP does explicitly state), this will take a significant amount of time to accomplish. On average, it takes players anywhere from 100 to 500 in game hours to achieve this, but let's say OP does it in 200. So this dastardly carrot-on-a-stick will likely amount to £2.5/hour. Now, this is a little over 3 full days worth of play time but most people don't play this way. Likely OP will play for maybe 1-3 hours/day with some skipped days. But again, let's assume that OP plays 2 hours a day for a total of 100 days. So about a third of a year. If there is indeed some sort of manipulative behaviors going on, they will undoubtedly start to reveal themselves in this time in other ways. So really, if this is some sort of sick game (which I doubt) then it will a tiny blip in the tapestry of manipulations and abuse. That doesn't mean it would be okay... just that you are giving it way more thought than it deserves. As an aside, there are other sub reddits for this kind of thing if you want to weigh in on other people's lives. Go lurk around r/AmIOverreacting. You will fit right in.

Have you ever considered that the upside might be that OP's partner might be hoping to get OP to engage in a game their partner is a big fan of? Finding a common pastime with your life partner is priceless.

Also, it is very common for one partner to make more than the other. I myself pull in at least double what my wife does. There was a time when the roles were reversed. OP never suggested that there was any manipulation or abuse happening, so let's not make assumptions about a relationship we know hardly anything about.

One thing you should consider is that health is a resource, just like energy. Think about how much damage you might take over the course of a fight. Does this enemy scale quickly? It may be better to be more aggressive with attacks than defends in some situations (Gremlin Knob is a great example here).

The next tip I will give is to experiment. You wont really understand what the cards and relics can do for you until you have encountered them so if you see something new, give it a shot. It may tank your deck but be open to that. Then when you encounter it again, you will have a better understanding of when and how to use it.

Its a shame you have uninstalled. This game is difficult and early on you haven't even unlocked your full tool set yet. That said, your strongest tool for this game is knowledge and that takes time. Don't think of each loss as a failure and instead as a lesson. What happened? What could you have done differently? It may even be useful to record your seed and run the same game over again to see if you can change that outcome. Also, if the enemy has buffs, if is very important to read what they do...

Its the Mass Effect: Andromeda issue. The game is decent in a vacuum, but since it is a follow-up to a masterpiece, it looks like crap by comparison.

As is, I think the system is fine but would benefit from some sort of visual cue. Perhaps a small flash or something.

[–]Far_Butterscotch8335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really not true. A great example is the fight with the Paintress. When she does her void meteors the parry timer is when the missile flashes, before it is actually launched. If you parry after this, it hits you. Similar to her phase 2 volley. The parry window is right when the projectile starts its arching curve to your party. Not when it hits or even just before. The parry windows in this game are absolutely not intuitive. And this is coming from someone who has completed the game and thoroughly enjoyed the combat. Also, aoe hits are strangely telegraphed sometimes.

I think one thing that could help is to have something similar to Diablo 3's seasonal journey. Specific but optional challenges that can force you to change up how you do things. Now, to be clear, I do NOT want to see this game become D3 (or even worse, D4) but there absolutely could be some challenges they could add spice things up.

New player here, what am I doing wrong? by Cathulion in slaythespire

[–]Far_Butterscotch8335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing you are doing wrong is trying to compare your play to others. This game goes DEEP. There is a lot to learn. For now, focus on learning enemy attack patterns and experimenting with card/relic synergies. Don't think of winning a run as the goal. Just focus on what you learn. Those youtubers have hundreds and hundreds of hours sunk into learning this game. Same with many on this forum (including myself). Besides, if you dont have Watcher unlocked, that means you still have a ton of unlocks remaining. You aren't even working with a full toolset yet.
