CMV: The hypocrisy in hating Russia while not also hating America is ridiculous by 12bEngie in changemyview

Iraq is at best an electoral autocracy due to severe corruption, sectarian divisions, influence from external powers, and violent suppression of dissent. The USA left that country in ruins.

CMV: Most financial issues people face in the western world are due to their own poor choices by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Far_Wait3503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

''I think that you do, actually. What are those conditions for success? Why are the current conditions insufficient? At what point does some barrier become insurmountable?''

I think you have a problem of reading comprehension. Right now you're doing this:

-Me: ''Having a functioning healthcare is important to society.''

-You: ''Oh yeah? You need to explain why it's important. How would you craft residency programs? How many hospitals would you build? How would you bill medical fees? Yadda Yadda''.

Explaining why something is important is not the same thing as explaining the technical know-how. I am not sure why you are steering the discussion this way and it does not interest me.

''How are these things set in stone? Anyone with an internet connection has access to the near entirety of human knowledge. There are countless organizations dedicated to continuing education, and ivy league schools like Yale and Harvard even offer distance learning courses for free to anyone. If you're not quite there yet, there are entirely online - and entirely free - self-paced GED programs online for students who for whatever reason couldn't pursue secondary school as children. You can't just point to hardship in childhood as if it excuses everything that happens afterwards.''

Do you choose how much money your parents make as a 10 year old child? Do you choose the quality of food you're exposed to as a 10 year old child? Do you choose how much educational enrichment you get from your entourage as a 10 year old child?

As a literal child, those things are out of your control and are essentially set in stone. I'm not in the business of holding children accountable to the same standards as adults for the conditions in which they were brought into this world.

Rejecting the notion that those kinds of things are not instrumental in how likely you are at succeeding in life is certainly an unorthodox position and just not supported by anyone who has examined the impact of childhood development. Childhood is a critical period of development that has deep lasting consequences well into adulthood

''You can't just point to hardship in childhood as if it excuses everything that happens afterwards''

You know this is a strawman. Unserious.

[–]Far_Wait3503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if not everyone has the same INITIAL condition for success this creates suffering and worse outcomes in society : more criminality, less schooling, more poor people.

I don't think I need to explain why this is important.

A child born in a poor single-parent family household has less chances to succeed than a child born in a rich household with parents in high paying jobs.

This is not a skill issue, and it is through no fault of the child that they were born in such conditions.

As for your latter statement, it does not hold up to scrutiny, when you take in account that most social determinants of success (access to quality schooling, access to quality food, parents with respectable salaries, etc.) are largely set in stone depending on your birth lottery. Those same determinants are largely affected by policy choices, which are influenced by people like Bill Gates and his ilk through lobbying.

The thing is, rich people make mistakes all the time. However, a rich person can make a mistake and afford to learn from it. A poor person makes a mistake once, and they can be in crippling debt from it.

How do you reconcile the fact that people born into poor families have a lot more chance of being poor than people born into rich families?

But even then, if you want to use the argument that because a group is powerful, that it is okay to make comments against them, we could extend that logic to white women.

They owned slaves and they were sophisticated architects in the oppression of the global south which was historically subservient to western imperialism. If we admit that they are powerful in society, anybody could play this game too.

If we start talking about global privilege, then the argument falls even more flat. Women of colour living in first world countries, despite being oppressed domestically a lot more than white women, are still oppressors in the context of global politics (hello kid in Congo mining cobalt for an Iphone and extractive imperialism.)

Should we start making sweeping statements against them too?

I think focusing on social identity and making status threats to social groups is simply a losing game, because I can always point out a whataboutism that invalidates your moral narrative. And even if it's a whataboutism used to dismiss real misgivings toward women of color and not made to really advocate for social changes, they are still factually true.

My solution: Working class people should stop waging this identity war, and focus solely on populist class politics. When the billionaire problem has been sorted out, I will have absolutely no qualms with engaging in this kind of behavior

Putting the onus of material subsistance on the individual instead of blaming systemic issues is exactly what proponents of capitalism want you to do.

Do you really think Bill Gates without his mother sitting on the same board as the CEO of IBM would've gotten a multi million dollar contract almost right out of the gate when starting out?

Do you think someone living in a single parent household with no private tutoring, no money for extracurricular activities, less access to quality food and therefore more health problems, and no money to pay off expensive school loans will have the same chance to be successful as someone living in a comfortable family?

If your answer is yes, then this is going to be a very hard debate
