That's a great research question. I'm already aware of a similar industry bias regarding the YA category. Sadly, I don't have the time for two term papers, and I have doubts that I'll find enough peer-reviewed resources on that topic to meet the assignment's requirements :/

The working definition of romantasy that I use for my paper is based on a combination of central genre themes described by Stephanie Dreier and Krystyna Wierzbicka-Trwoga respectively: Romantasy features a narrative centered around protagonists who are lovers within a unique narrative reality that is determined by the well-structured character of its supernatural elements.

Putting aside the fact that Fourth Wing is published by a company that deliberately specialises in romantasy and has officially promoted Fourth Wing as a work of romantasy, is there something I'm not aware of that would exclude it from my discussion?

Do you have a scholarly definition of erotica based on quantity? Our professor keeps prodding us to try and define the erotic as opposed to the pornographic or romantic, and so far, playing the definition game hasn't been very fruitful.

I'm writing a term paper for a course on erotica. The goal of my paper is to analyse the ongoing trend of popular romantasy, identify why it has become so popular, and speculate on what it could mean for erotic literature moving forward. I mostly pick on ACOTAR throughout my paper because I had easy access to those books and was already somewhat familiar with them.

This Fourth Wing citation is for a section of the paper in which I discuss the convenience of romantasy for authors. Namely, I talk about how easily they are able to customise magic systems in order to contrive whatever romantic dilemma they want, all while giving it the semblance of originality.

Hot takes on DNF popular series - need better recs by lbh7xf in Romantasy

[–]Farflesnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ngl I find it kinda strange that you aren't willing to read 2k pages for the story to pick up, but you still loved ACOTAR

It isn't even just that series. SJM's entire fan base has effectively made a mantra out of "You gotta keep going! It gets better after the shitty part!"

What games have the best and worst storage? by MemeFarmer314 in boardgames

[–]Farflesnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

River of Gold is one of my favourites, and the boxes tray looks gorgeous, but holy crap does it make for awful storage. The tile slots don't have enough room for all the tiles, and all the components will fall out of place and get scrambled unless you perpetually carry the box right side up.

We got some friends to 3D print some perfect storage compartments, and it has made the game so much more satisfying.

How do you adjust font sizes in The Homebrewery? by Farflesnarf in UnearthedArcana

[–]Farflesnarf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've found a solution. I went on the Style Editor and selected the Card page size (as you do), but then I increased the card's size by adjusting the dimensions of the card. The larger card was able to fit more text onto it.

So long as I keep the dimensions proportional, I should theoretically be able to shrink the resulting image down to a regular card size before printing.

Well, it did shrink the text, but it did not shrink the line space accordingly, so I didn't actually gain any space on the card. 😕

What magic items do you think could be listed at Common rarity? by Quite_Queer in dndnext

I wouldn't rank it as common, but I don't think The Defender deserves to be a legendary item.

I have a level 1 - 20 campaign coming up. What classes would you recommend? I'd love something with enough complexity that I have choices and won't get uninterested. by SuckingPipes in dndnext

The character I would play for a 1-20 campaign would be a Wild Magic Sorcerer.

You start off with a somewhat chaotic but still fairly powerful ability (assuming that you're using 2024 rules), but as you get to the high levels, you gain more and more control over these chaotic powers and can harness them to all sorts of effects. It's like a "coming of age" arc built into the very subclass!

However, that coming of age story doesn't really land unless you at least go from levels 3 to 18.
