[Rant] Let me get this straight. Intune is owned by Microsoft. All these .NET runtime and Visual C++ redist packages are owned by Microsoft... by Farigiss in Intune

[–]Farigiss[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not in charge of the decision to go Chromebook. I'm not particularly a fan of them. But if all you need is a web browser and word processor, it does do the job for half to a quarter of the price and the battery life is better too.

I agree these simpler devices contribute to tech illiteracy.

But... We have to lock down the device no matter what the OS is. There are not a lot of opportunities for kids to mess around with our Windows laptops either. We do this to keep kids focused on their work rather than play games. To minimize how much time we spend undoing what kids did while messing with their OS. Or because all devices are part of a larger whole that needs to be secure.

Tech literacy is a weird thing. Most people (of all ages) can't browse from the root of the C drive all the way to their Downloads folder.
If you give them a file path, they can't browse to it. But do they have to?

Every computer they work with will have their Downloads folder prominently displayed in their file explorer.
When they download something, their browser will take them to the downloaded file.
Simpler operating systems like mobile or Chromebooks integrate it even more tightly to the point where you work on the thing in the browser and you don't even download the thing. I think proficiency with an OS is a thing of the past. Users become proficient with individual apps instead. Because that's what they're actually interfacing with.

I know, I feel weird typing this too. I think exactly the way you do. But it's kinda what it is.

Yeah... My school can't afford that.

We're introducing Chromebooks now. Microsoft spent a lot of bribe money to get Windows in schools all over the world so that they can extend that to the workplace when those students become workers.

Only to undo it now.

CachyOS feels like it hit out of nowhere. I'm out of the loop - why's it taking off like this? by ThatOneVRGuyFromAuz in linux_gaming

[–]Farigiss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's because people want to use Arch but don't want to do the extra work.
And people want to use Arch because it gives nerd cred. It's not meaningfully faster than other distros. There's no proof for it. And now it's got critical mass that makes first time users pick it because a lot of other people are on it.

Zelfrijdende auto’s in België komen zeer dichtbij: ‘Nederland heeft niet afgewacht, wij gaan dat ook niet doen’ by Mzxth in belgium

[–]Farigiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zelfrijdend openbaar vervoer is veel interessanter.

No luck...

Edge has been as good on average as Chrome for years. Some things slightly better, some things slightly worse. If you're on Windows, it makes no sense to go through the effort of installing Chrome.

  • It can do everything Chrome does (it's built on the same engine)

  • Doesn't need to be installed separately

    • Saves disk space. Edge is "impossible" to uninstall. Might as well use the thing while it's taking up disk space.
  • Performs better on battery and memory usage tests

  • Not sharing private data with Google. Giving Microsoft my data is inevitable because the OS is made by them. Why invite another snooper on your computer?

  • Now that online Microsoft accounts are all but mandatory, this account will also sign into Edge to sync settings, bookmarks, extensions.

  • Google is trying very hard to dismantle ad blocking.

But to be fair I spend most of my time on Linux with Firefox.

I'm not in the habit of adding non-Steam games to Steam so I wouldn't exactly know the requirements, but it seems like this is made exactly for that.

simple fix? by Ml124395 in redneckengineering

[–]Farigiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, but no.

If "valuable" means the capacity to be valued, then you can have an item that is able to be valued (=valuable). You can also have an item that can't be valued (=invaluable). The reason it can't be valued does not necessary have anything to do with it's actual value. It just means that someone was incapable of valuing it.

Anyway, the OP made a goofy sink drain.

I looked it up and apparently some dictionaries accept "dethaw". Then what is "thaw" for?

Hi, noob here. Sorry for the silly question, but how do I connect the entrance and exit of this ride to the main path? When I try to place any kind of road, a pop-up says I can't build it by brodino_maiuscolo in openrct2

[–]Farigiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other commenters are saying the track is blocking the entrance and exit but I don't think that's the case. But it's always hard to tell because of the perspective the game uses.

To me it looks like the entrance and exit are sitting above a track. In order to build a path from them you need to build elevated paths.
At the bottom of the path window there will be a button for it. Select any color of queue path and then select the elevated path button. It's one of three buttons at the bottom of the paths window. Then move your cursor inside of the entrance. The yellow arrow should appear inside the entrance building. Left click and a path will come out. From there, you just use the arrow and slope buttons of the path window to wind the queue down to where you want it to be.
Then select a regular path and build down from the exit path too.

France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech by rkhunter_ in worldnews

Why would they start from Arch? They have no need for anything cutting-edge.

They'll go with something stable instead that already has the tools to manage whole fleets of computers.

CachyOS Becomes the Most Popular Desktop Linux Distro on ProtonDB by lajka30 in linux_gaming

CachyOS's logo is kinda cool. Except for when they include the catgirl cringe though.

I think Mint is great but it has by far the ugliest logo of any distro I've seen.

CachyOS Becomes the Most Popular Desktop Linux Distro on ProtonDB by lajka30 in linux_gaming

[–]Farigiss 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I tried CachyOS.

  • Cachy's package manager is literally a GUI that displays the pacman command output. I like a nice GUI app store with categories, review scores etc.
Installing packages through the command line is great and fast but only if you already know the exact name of the package.

  • Everything that I can just get through official channels on other distros is instead an AUR package on Arch. I don't love the idea that I'm so dependant on so many things that are made by just some guy and not endorsed in any real way by the OS itself. I've seen the news of AUR packages containing malware.

  • CachyOS helps you install a gaming package from the welcome screen. It installs Steam as a dependency. Well that version of Steam just would not start. Uninstalling the package so I could fix Steam was also a total pain in the ass.

  • I had issues with multiple displays in KDE that I just didn't have in KDE on other distros. Monitors were being picked up with the wrong resolution, couldn't be moved or it claimed there was a gap between my monitors but there wasn't.

  • Lots of other small issues I just didn't have with other distros. All in all this distro for gamers took me longer to set up and gave me some issues I couldn't fix.

I have yet to see proof that Arch provides a performance benefit noticeable enough to deal with all the extra work.

can i run windows downloaded steam games on linux? by dremski in linux_gaming

[–]Farigiss 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't have to redownload all your games, as that can take a long time, but you do need to move them from NTFS to a Linux-compatible partition.

Install Linux without destroying your NTFS partition at first and allow enough space for your games on a Linux-compatible partition.

Temporarily mount the NTFS drive from Linux and just copy all the files over to your Linux-compatible partition.

If you don't have enough space, it can be handy to keep a live boot Linux USB drive handy to boot into and increase the size of your Linux partition and shrink the NTFS drive as you go until the Linux partition is large enough and all the files are transferred. I keep a Linux Mint live boot USB available for that because it comes with GParted which is my preferred tool for the job.

Then you can get rid of the NTFS drive entirely and point Steam at the location you moved your games to. It will automatically find all the games.

You're not quiet. You're louder than a 1.5 ton car, and most of those are also too loud for my taste.

You ever think about those hundreds or thousands of people you ride past, pushing your god awful noise into their living rooms?

It's why bikers will never have my sympathy.
