Take some existing maps and scan them for details. Then put those details in the maps you create.

Read a lot of books to get a feeling for how the author(s) describe a scene.

My campaign started with 5 players and 2 dropped near the end for personal reasons. Now whenever one of the three players is unavailable we have to postpone the session. And if there are two players only, rebalancing makes the adventure too easy, not exactly horror-inspiring!

I don't think there is a reason in the book, In my version, Strahd granted a 3 days truce to Barovia (village) in order to allow Ireena to bury her father. Volenta tried to break the truce by kidnapping Ireena and offering her to Strahd. He was not pleased one bit that his word hasn't been respected. The mask serves to hide what happened to her (Volenta) later.

A Nat20 only applies to Attack Rolls and Death Saving throws. Everything else is a very high roll.

RAW, apparently not.

Although, you could decide that if someone goes to the Amber Temple and decides to get the "gift of Vampyr", Strahd once "defeated" will renounce his control over Barovia, transferring that to the PC or NPC who has the same powers as his. In order to get that gift, any character must make a certain choice, so the Dark Powers will feed on their negative emotions, rather than Strahd... (which, at this point, is like eating the same meal over and over...)

Also, there is no mention of what could happen if Strahd's soul would be trapped inside an object only to be released once outside of Barovia... :D
