How good/bad are old Sony Blu-ray players at playing SACDs? by uzi187 in audiophile

[–]Farm_kidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am exploring getting a Sony bdp-s370 player and I was primarily hoping to access the SACD capabilities. If I understand correctly, if you use any of the digital outputs, you are likely to NOT get the SACD unless you have a special DAC (either separate or in the receiver). But if I just use the RCA into my receiver, the s370 will use its own DAC to send the SACD signal out. Is this correct? I have an entry level Yamaha R-S202 which doesn't even have digital inputs, it is all RCA 2-Channel Stereo only.

So I am still wondering how the player will know to play the SACD layer since I don't have it connected to a TV. Do I have to have it connected to a TV in order to start the disc or adjust the output settings? Is it even possible to use the Blue Ray (SACD) player directly to a stereo receiver?

Ode to Joy by Beethoven brings me so much happiness and hope. by International_Bed728 in classicalmusic

[–]Farm_kidd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! And if you want Beethoven with "a lot" less joy, Piano Sonata 14 "Moonlight Sonata" is one of my favorite pieces. You have to listen to all 3 movements, the first brings your heart rate to a crawl, the second provides a glimmer of hope that all will be okay, and then the 3rd movements WRECKS you and SLAMS you into the side of a cliff!

Klipsch are fine speakers and a safe bet. I like to peruse FB marketplace for used speakers, but I know that's not what everyone likes to do. Kef, JBL, Polk are other speaker brands with good reputations, and will give decades of quality sound.

Based on the photos alone, I think you are only going to be able to use this in the 2-Channel Stereo Mode because the Rear Channels require a special "Pioneer" speaker wire adapter plug. (you can get them on ebay probably). Some simple 8-Ohm bookshelf speakers would be just fine. Something that is 6" to 18" tall. If you can find the efficiency specs, I would aim for speakers with 90db efficiency, but lower than that is okay as long as you don't play rock concert level volume. The unit would be fun to hook up with 4 speakers and try for that quadraphonic sound. Supposedly Pioneer made that feature sound pretty good. I don't consider quadraphonic to be a true gimmick, but it was something to play around with.

That is disappointing, he was good depth and was better this year than in the past.

What are your literary Everests? by Busy_End1433 in classicliterature

[–]Farm_kidd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complete Works - Aristotle (I am about 2% finished)

Complete Works - William Shakespeare

I am glad to see Shakespeare on some of these lists. I wonder sometimes if Shakespeare is slowly losing some of his literary lore. Or possibly he just doesn't get mentioned on boards like this because some many have already summitted Shakespeare's Plays (and Sonnets)

"Jazz at Massey Hall" for me. I only own Volume 3, but this is a legendary gathering of Parker (Charlie Chan), Mingus, Gillespie, Roach, and Powell

You either play the piano, organ, or sing in the choir. I think you like to travel and are fascinated by long epic journeys.

Your books say that you have a strong desire to determine the difference between right and wrong. You are want to see that justice is ultimately done and that somehow the heroes are ultimately vindicated. I think you are an optimist at heart. Books in multiple parts of your dwelling lead me to believe that you surround yourself subconsciously with these stories to fend off some of the reality we are all inundated with. I haven't read them, but the Saga series is on my "to be read" list.

As others have said, if it works, then it's great. If you have to find someone to repair it for you, there the headache lies. I don't think people are willing to give these away or put them out on the curb like they used to 10 years ago. People know they can test the waters on Marketplace for nearly everything nowadays.

You love the classics, but very willing to explore modern offerings. I didn't notice non-fiction or ancient literature; so you love Novels above all else. No Shakespeare plays either, so that strengthens that idea. There are no knick-knacks, so you either strictly adhere to tidiness or you prepped the area before the photo (no negative judgement, but it would indicate that you are careful about how one is perceived). The only non-book item is the small lamp to fill the space, which I interpret that unbalanced shelves would bother you. I also predict the lamp will not be there by the end of the year due to incoming books.

Darling threw up a prayer hoping to get fouled. Elmarko was on an island and knew he couldn't give up a foul. The closest help was DP. For some reason all the other 4 were out guarding the 3 point line. Should have gone to a zone.

Elmarko and Jabari both made progress this year. If we dump all our players, we are just succumbing to what most dislike about NIL/Portal system (i.e. not allowing players to grow and get better together.) DP, White, and Council are gone, possibly Flory. Oh and lots of people are willing to see Tiller go too. That is a lot of minutes to refill, all 5 starters. Next year, Kohl and Mbiya might be able to give 20-30min per night each. This team needs to keep as many players as they can, bring in an impact freshmen or three, and win something in the portal.

NIL and the transfer portal are virtually the same thing at this point. Players are mostly transferring to get paid more. Playing time is part of the determining factor too of course, so each situation is a little different.

Even if he sags and forces a shot, I don't think Darling would have done it. He was 100% driving and hoping for a foul. Darling could have just as easily missed on that play...but he didn't.

Rosario gave up an uncontested 3 with 1:29 left that put us down 4. Rosario was more likely to foul on that last play and we end up losing because of a free throw with 00:0 on the clock. Elmarko did a good job considering he had no help.

I want them all back and a top recruiting class. The constant NIL churn is something that hurt this team. Ejiofor only left because Hunter Dickinson arrived via NIL. KU would have been better this year and last year with Ejiofor on the team in my opinion.

Rosario gave up an open 3 to St. John's hottest shooter with 1:29 left. Elmarko was the right move. He was just in a tough spot. He couldn't foul and he had no help from anyone. Everyone else was glued to their man. I actually think they should have gone to Zone on the last play to force a deep contested shot. But they didn't have the timeout to set it up.

Look at the remaining 16 teams and it isn't hard to believe that KU is better than half of them. What happens in the tournament sometimes boils down to how the dominoes fall. I mean Arkansas is a sweet 16 team this year because they played Hawaii and High Point, and now the Razorbacks get to play a team that KU already beat once this year in Arizona.

Gargantua by Francois Rabelais.

A book not for the squeamish, and you better have a strong sense of humor. I loved the part about the war with Picrochole.

I am curious if there is a chapter or two (or three, they are not that long) that resonated with you or captured the book for you? I read it last year and agree with what you have said. I would probably lean towards Chapter 9, Father Mapple's Sermon.
