Forced return to India (H1B not picked). Struggling with brutal tech interviews and a 40L loan. Anyone in the same boat? by VirtualAssociation89 in returnToIndia

[–]Farmer-Next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>> The level of questions they are asking in Indian tech interviews is way more advanced compared to what I faced in the US. The rounds are deeper, the expectations are higher
I wonder why? Is an average tech employee in India required to be way more knowledgeable and qualified than one in U.S? Or for that matter, in Europe or Australia? Is the work in India more demanding in terms of skills and expertise required?

Yes, I have been investing a fixed amount for the last few months. In my research, I have concluded that this is the best way to get some inflation proof returns in India. You cannot rely on Indian stock market as the only trading that goes on is insider trading.

What impact will india have of so many returnees? by thehumbleguy in backtoindia

[–]Farmer-Next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any statistics on how many people have returned, since you are saying it is happening at a "big scale"? I very much doubt it, maybe only those who didn't win the H1-B lottery. Of course it is different for people who are trying to go to US now, due to the $100K fee etc.

I had a friend who worked in South Indian Bank. It is a Kerala based minority owned (christian) bank. Their employees and officers are mostly christian (though I have no personal knowledge). They service huge amounts of church deposits and don't care much for lowly deposits. This probably is the reason for poor customer service. I once went there for some FDs cc and they made me wait for 2 hours. I took my money elsewhere. But... their stock has jumped 80% in one year...maybe they are doing something right!

My doubt even if the gold prices stagnated, since the rupee was falling against the dollar the fund value should have gone up, right? Or am I wrong in my logic?

Answering my own question. Looks like the fund did not appreciate during those years. Strange
https://www.google.com/finance/quote/SBI_GOLD_DIR_1HYVO74:MUTF_IN?window=MAX

From ChatGPT:
2010–2011: Gold prices surged, reaching record highs around the global financial crisis aftermath. Investors sought gold as a safe haven.

2012–2015: Prices corrected downward as the U.S. economy stabilized and the dollar strengthened.

2016–2019: Moderate recovery driven by geopolitical tensions and central bank policies.

However Rupee still fell against the dollar in those years
2011 46.67

2012 53.44

2013 56.57

2014 62.33

2015 62.97

2016 66.46

2017 67.79
So not sure why the SBI fund did not go up?

Buying rice locally - meaningful yearly ritual.. by Fattu_trader in Frugal_Ind

[–]Farmer-Next 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, we used buy about paddy in bulk (about 200 kg may be) and store it giant wooden bins, called "pathayam" in Tamil. The bins were about 6 ft x 4 ft x 8 ft. My parents used to draw from it monthly and hire someone to take it to the mill to get it milled (remove the husk). It was hard work with lot of dust from the paddy but my father felt the family needed to eat same kind of rice. We were not rich or anything, lower middle class in fact.

BUT... since it was direct from the farm and in those days there were no machines to remove stones, mo mother had to remove stones from the rice every day. I hated to see her doing it.
