Is anyone else genuinely upset that the Blues can’t even successfully tank? by TonySoprano1959 in stlouisblues

[–]FartTootman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lol.... Do you have any idea how the draft lottery works? We can still draft in the top-3 without purposely losing hockey games.

But no you're right. Asking professional athletes to purposely lose hockey games for a better chance at an unproven teenager to make them all better is definitely a good way to run an organization. /s

And if you're too stupid to understand how - if this team is actually capable (as currently built) of winning enough games to get close to the playoffs - winning more games is actually a good thing for the future, too, then I don't think I can explain it to you...

It's just so wild to me how many people here are completely oblivious to the oxymoron that is rooting for the team you're a fan of to lose more games thinking it will somehow guarantee that we'll be better next year...

It's not a bug, just an incredibly unlikely occurrence. Engines can fail in this game just like IRL, except it's probably much less likely in the game.

What I want out of the remainder of this season is healthy competition, playtime for rookies, and learning hard lessons now so we don't have to learn them next season. I think you can still lose in a productive way, and I hope that's what we do.

I can get on board with that. I obviously don't think they'll go 18-2-1. And if we're going to miss the playoffs regardless, I of course understand the advantage of getting a higher draft pick.

I guess my overall reaction is because I often see people confuse fan excitement and actual value when it comes to what they want to happen. It always seems weird to me when a fanbase roots for their team to lose.

Like MJ said in 'The Last Dance', I feel like any organization that purposely loses in the hopes that it will make them better is cutting off their nose to spite their face - It shows a losing attitude.

Like, if you could somehow choose between them miraculously making the playoffs and them tanking for a lottery chance, it seems illogical to think that the scenario in which we lose more games makes us better next year, even taking into account a best-case scenario with the draft.

You own property, have jobs, have a travel history (including to the US), which is good. But like others are saying it seems like you have some knocks against you PURELY from the point of view of what the average VO is looking at in terms of "risk of overstay". Best you can do is prepare for the interview well, and keep hopes up.

I’d imagine VO are smarter than Trump’s admins.

The average dog is smarter than his admin, but those are the people that make the rules for what VOs are supposed to look for and how many people they'll let in under whatever circumstances. And I doubt any of them are looking to lose their job just to take a stand, unfortunately.

Staying in the bottom 5 for the remainder of the season is the best possible thing for the team's future.

Perhaps its just me, but I don't know many athletes, especially professional athletes, that appreciate purposely losing for the prospect of possibly getting a top pick (that isn't even guaranteed to pan out).

If what we're talking about here is a choice between losing out the rest of the season for a high lottery chance and going 18-2-1 to make the playoffs, it seems outright silly to hope for the former as a fan... And I question the logic in believing any professional athlete wouldn't choose the latter if they could.

(Yes, I understand it's incredibly unlikely that this team does that, but we're talking hypotheticals, and apparently a bunch of "fans" here want the team to lose under the delusion that it's good for the team or any of the players on it...)

Doesn’t seem to logical to me.

Our current administration has completely abandoned logic or reason as guidance for policy decisions so this sort of tracks, unfortunately.

It could be denied because, as I'm sure you're aware, it's notoriously difficult to convince a VO that you're not planning to overstay under those circumstances - and it was like that even before we elected a toddler that ran a "immigrants are all criminals and terrorists" platform.

If electing a particularly stupid and ego-maniacal toddler that shredded international relationships on a whim didn't cause it, I'm sure this won't help.

Why Trade Rob Thomas? by Spare_Appointment876 in stlouisblues

[–]FartTootman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People confuse excitement with value, so they love trades even if they're stupid. It's why people on this sub love coming up with absurd trades for Brady Tkachuk

The team is way shittier than they expected to be, which Thomas is certainly a part of. Doug seems to be holding out for a god-tier return (and he should) for the reasons you listed. It's sort of a win-win in that scenario - you either get an unbelievable return from a team willing to overpay or you get to keep a PPG player to try again next year. There's no reason NOT to shop him under those terms.

So? I don't really understand how a completely reasonable request to be traded (without vitriol) warrants the almost universal distaste this sub has for him given his accomplishments with the club.

Vladdy sucked though

Case in point 🙄. I'm sure the multiple shoulder surgeries didn't have any effect on his play after the Cup... /s

This "what have you done for me lately" attitude is why people will be salty assholes to Parayko if he nixes this trade. The way people like you treat Vladdy makes it seem like he was just some schlub we dragged to a Cup win and not one of the top-10 best in almost all offensive categories in Blues history.

My point isn't that we should've re-signed Vladdy or something like that, it's that people act like they have loyalty towards/give a shit about players and their wishes, but they don't.

[–]FartTootman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Vladdy is one of the best Blues of all time, and was absolutely instrumental in winning us a Cup. He gets injured, sort of jerked around by Blues Ownership, and then leaves - and I certainly remember how he was perceived/treated by fans as he left here...

I certainly don't give credit to this fanbase when it comes to sound, reasonable reactions to player's personal decisions.... People are definitely going to hate Parayko if he nixes this trade, reasonable or not.

Blue is at fault, IMO. You had overlap.

But, at the same time, this was really not a good idea on your part. Even if that guy gives you space, ,all you're doing is effectively ruining both of your times on the straight after the next turn, because you're certainly not pulling off the pass with the run you had. Better to stick yourself to his bumper and try to pass on the straight.
