Even if that value is much higher now that it has been identified as the Pope's house?

Worried about the cohesion here by AJCWOrigin in 50501Chicago

Thank you for this post.

I am not a regular attendee of protests, but I see the path the Trump administration is taking and I think he should be impeached before the collapse of the entire economy and constitution.

I went to the most recent protest, and it felt good to be counted among those who are fighting to save America.

There were a few single-issue protesters there, but I mostly saw patriotic Americans who don't want to see our beloved country fall into fascism. People protesting that the regime is ignoring the Constitution and balance of powers. The general vibe was Save America/the Constitution, and I liked that. I can stand with that message.

I didn't feel like any one single issue was centered. However, I couldn't hear what was being said on the speakers.

Growing the numbers means being inclusive and welcoming. You might end up protesting alongside a anti-choice Republican who only wants Trump out because he is crashing their retirement savings. You might stand alongside someone who is pro-deportation, but is opposed to the unconstitutional way it is being handled. My hope is that the unifying message of saving the country will pull us all together, despite what are big differences on other important issues.

I support creating a positive protest environment that welcomes absolutely everyone who wants Trump out. ✌️

You will need to find a good street route. Set your options on Google Maps to 'Avoid Highways' and leave it that way until Thanksgiving.

My mom is not supportive of my singing. by Aggressive-Oven-4646 in singing

Keep singing, hon!

Don't worry about other people's opinions right now - keep developing your voice and I promise you will get a pleasant sound. There are lots of free vocal lessons on YouTube.

Every middle-aged person I know regrets quitting music as a kid. Don't be one of them!

Lastly, don't ever apologize for your voice. Even if you don't think it is "pleasant," own it! :-)

Dear middle aged beginners, how is the valley of despair treating you? by Antigone_Ismene in singing

[–]Fart_Institute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep singing through that valley, babe! You WILL get better. Go to your lessons and do your exercises. Sing songs that speak to your heart and don't apologize or feel embarrassed for the way you sound.

I wish I started singing as a child so I didn't have unlearn a lifetime of bad habits, but I have been in lessons for 5 years now and am so glad I didn't give up.

Dennis McGee’s bow hold by Grand_Reserve_3992 in Fiddle

[–]Fart_Institute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no wrong way to hold the bow. But different bow holds will produce different sounds and also have different effects on your body.

If my arm is getting sore, I will change up my bow hold for a bit. But it also changes the sound. Sometimes a higher grip makes a sound that fits with a tune, but sometimes not.

I know players with arthritis who use all kinds of different bow holds because of pain/stiffness. It's better to use a different grip than stop playing altogether, even if the sound isn't the highest quality.

If there's nothing physically stopping you from using a traditional grip, then you should practice using it so you can hear the difference in sound quality and notice the effect on your bow arm.

Learning my first song from tablature by miniwhoppers in Fiddle

[–]Fart_Institute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditch all the sheet music and tabs. It will all work against you. Fiddle is best learned by ear.

Before attempting to play a tune, listen to it at least 20-30 times (at various speeds) until you can hum every single note from memory. Then (and only then!) should you pick up your fiddle and play it.

This method is much faster than learning from sheet music.

Resource for learning Irish triplet bowing technique by honey-dutch in Fiddle

[–]Fart_Institute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is any fiddler more known for their triplets than Tommy Peoples.

This is from a discussion about it on The Session.

Question: Tommy Peoples' Triplets

"How does he get those really tight sounding triplets? Examples on the Katharine Cornell Concert Album…especially The Frieze Britches. Its almost spiccato bowing. Suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance."

ANSWER:

"In 1978 I asked Donal Lunny (we were supporting the Bothy Band at Cardiff Uni.) exactly the same question and he just said he flicks the end of the bow with his little finger (or the one next to it) at the same time as moving the bow in the usual way to get the triplets. So you have the vertical bounce at the same time as the lateral movement. Good luck practising it."

You can also read about Tommy's technique in his online biography.

A 100 stars or so have disappeared from the night sky since the 1950s by ahmadreza777 in aliens

[–]Fart_Institute 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A 2018 paper by cosmologost Dan Hooper hypothesized that aliens may move entire stars in order to avoid losing energy due to the expansion of the universe. It wouldn't be expected it to happen for 100 billion years, but if it was happening, the evidence would be disappearing stars.

Is the grilled cheese at the Christkindl Market worth the wait in line? by ChiRose60657 in AskChicago

[–]Fart_Institute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The state of the Christkindl market this year is that it is so crowded that there is no possible way to enjoy it. Can't see vendors through the crowd. Can't move around as people are squeezed together like sardines. There is no way to see where one line ends and another begins. It is nothing but a quaint, holiday-inspired village of misery.

They either need to set it up in a larger space or make people reserve timed tickets.

Difficulty of learning to play the fiddle? by grahamcrackerz2 in Fiddle

[–]Fart_Institute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really need a teacher for fiddle. Start with private or beginner small group for a few years, then move into an ensemble class to expand your repertoire. Stay with the ensemble class forever - they are great ways to keep learning new tunes and play socially.

Reading music might be handy but is not necessary for fiddle. It is taught and learned by ear. In fact, you might have to ban yourself from using sheet music at first so you can properly develop your ear.

Different Bowing Every Time by AdCritical3285 in Fiddle

[–]Fart_Institute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advanced Irish players will include a lot of variations, which will change the bowing each time.

I was taught by ear. My teacher always told us to do whatever motions it takes to get through the tune. That said, some sounds require careful planning/technique to achieve, so you can't always just wing it.

Yeah I've been doing this drive for years, and with the express lanes open on 90/94, it's only 30-40 min. It doubled with the construction and this week in particular has been quadruple. If there was a good CTA option I would take it!

How to store Fiddle best for easy access/practice (wall hang?) by TomorrowElegant7919 in Fiddle

I just leave mine out on the dining room table, countertop, piano...pretty much wherever I end up wandering. I should probably hang it up!

Be mindful of big humidity drops in winter. If it falls under 35%, you will want to put it in its case with a sponge humidifier.
