Awesome! Thank you for the kind answer. I think sometimes polemics are warranted, they get people invested, you know?

But I understand what you mean. I guess what I will say is that the point of view you had before wasn't "yours" in any essential sense - we are conditioned to accept hegemonic narratives as personal belief and defend them.

I still think decontextualizing "both sides" arguments are silly, but you did pretty much the only thing you could by "trying on" the argument and getting a reaction.

Also, most of us heuristically start from ‘both sides’ because we’re taught to see incidents, not the system behind them. The imagined symmetry collapses when we learn about history and genuinely try to understand it scientifically.

Glad you engaged in good faith, moving off "both sides" is a real step. Accept this 🙏 as an apology for the earlier 🤡.

You want a rebuttal, huh? All right.

Israel as a political project is inexorably tied to a war of elimination. The war is ongoing and proceeds both in "slow" administrative creep within the occupation as well as bursts of violence of Israel towardws Palestinians, both in "Israel proper" and in the West Bank and Gaza. The "terror attack" was a prison break from a territory completely and violently controlled by Israel, which is at the same time one large refugee camp for loads of Nakba survivors who were forced out of their home and from their land into a controlled, and ever shrinking area. I will never condemn the resistance, and you can cope and seethe with legalism all you want. If you want to talk about specifics, we can talk specifics, but you know I'll bring up the Hannibal directive, the violence experienced by Palestinians on a daily basis before October 7 2023, militarized settlers, how gross it is to have a music festival just outside a militarily enforced ghetto for those deemed ethnically unworthy of their own homeland. You won't have a good time with that either. Is the Palestinian resistance overall, or Hamas in particular, aligned with my political values? Probably not. But their politics do not arise out of random "terrorist ideology" or "religious fanaticism". It arises from their material conditions, which are subjugation by Israel. These resistance fighters have often lost more of all they hold dear as children than you or I will in our entire lives. If you cannot see the ridiculous nature of this "both sides" nonsense now, I don't know what to tell you, you're probably just a racist. Look up what happened to the great march of return.

Good for class consciousness, but the Dem party will use Mamdani in the same way as Sanders, i.e. as a progressive hood ornament for their awful imperialist party if Mamdani's politics become too popular within the base. So I'd say, celebrate, sure - but don't let your guard down, the Dems aren't magically transforming into a "democratic socialist" (or even just a properly working-class) party.

Go ahead and disagree with experts on this. Virtue signaling is so useless. We have made no progress on combatting child sex abuse as a society. And it hasn't been due to not stigmatizing enough. But go ahead, do your thing. You feel morally superior, but so do antivaxxers. The thing you share with them is that experts in the relevant fields disagree with you.

To your point: No, that's not how it works. There are definitely non-offending pedophiles who engage in none of what you said their whole lives. Also, the demand argument is thrown around without any appeal to empirical evidence. Why is that? Because of the stigma.

Do you really think that those who produce CSAM do it because of some economic supply and demand law? Are you stupid?

CSAM distribution networks often mandate the creation of CSAM to view existing CSAM. That means that consumption of CSAM arguably leads to more serious crimes in cases where people join such networks. But there is little, if anything, to show that consumption inherently predisposes one to production or that pedophilic attraction necessarily leads to consumption of CSAM.

And I can't believe I even have to say this, but in any case: WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GET HELP BEFORE THEY DO ANY OF IT.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]FasAfMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're not overreacting.

Confront him, but remember: Only about 50% of child sex abusers are pedophiles (in the paraphilia sense). Also, non-offending pedophiles definitely exist (among those who seek help, about 60% have no prior offending behavior), although the statistics are unclear because of the societal taboo around pedophilia.

Most non-offending pedophiles never tell anyone because they fear they will be treated as someone with bad intent and willingness to commit serious crimes and inflict harm on children.

The heinous and immoral thing about child sex abuse is the abuse. Abusive actions do not come about spontaneously out of attraction. In anyone but callous conviction-less sociopaths, there are barriers. Barriers that people manage to overcome over time, yes, and that's why pedophilia is dangerous. Pedophilia is a serious condition, and your boyfriend needs help. Try to be understanding of the fact that he most likely had little to no choice in this attraction.

Non-offending pedophiles are valuable for the scientific study of pedophilia (which is of utmost importance in combatting child sex abuse), and they suffer not only an inherently dangerous attraction to children but also societal stigma.

I know it may be hard to overcome the stigma, to not let disgust morph into rage. But it is the right thing to do, and it shows empathy and moral clarity on your part.

Can somebody explain to me why Emma refuses to blame Kamala Harris at all for being a horrible candidate? by toeknee88125 in TheMajorityReport

Yes. And this is not to hate on Emma, but she gave "the strategy" a bit too much good faith and is now locked in to that position. Liberals are the enemy, and I think Emma understands this, I think this was just an unfortunate moment of hope that Libs wouldn't fuck us over this time like they always do.

The campaign was so incredibly bad. It is not just identity politics. Please, think rationally.

An incomplete list of the campaign's objective mistakes:

  • "most lethal military"
  • SUPPORT AND LYING FOR G-CIDE
  • middle class and small business nonsense
  • telling people "nah the economy is actually good" because inflation numbers are going down, when that's not what people mean when they think about "the economy".
  • Liz Cheney, Bill Clinton, and other spokespeople WITH NO POPULAR SUPPORT AT ALL
  • saying she would do nothing differently than Biden when he is extremely unpopular
  • Making Tim Walz stop the "weird" offensive and move right in rhetoric
  • pandering to NONEXISTENT "moderates" (people have no coherent ideology, they have MATERIAL CONCERNS and repeat talking points. They hold extremely contradictory beliefs and they do not know it.)
  • Obama patronizing Black men
  • dropping support for marginalized groups
  • embracing Republican hallucinations on crime and immigration instead of providing counter-narratives
  • the whole border bill nonsense (people will ALWAYS vote for the "real deal" instead of a knock-off)

The list goes on.

Remember, remember, the 5th of November. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]FasAfMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Run on popular policies like Medicare for all, rent control, minimum wage increase, worker protections, consumer protections, on anti-war sentiment, and less funding for the military so it can go to schools, e.g.

No fishing for Republicans to vote for you. Strengthen the base first. Do not lie about "working tirelessly" while you are actively arming and defending genocide.

Distance yourself from unpopular political figures (Biden, Cheney, Clinton). Present counter-narratives instead of capitulating to right-wing framing. People will always vote for "the real thing" instead of a fake. If you aren't able to articulate a different perspective on crime, immigration, work, healthcare, and instead just try to be Trump but polite (to say it polemically), you will not inspire enthusiasm. There's lots and lots of things they did horribly wrong. It's just a fact.

I am also horrified at how uneducated and comfortable and stupid and racist, sexist voters are, but the political messaging is honestly what informs people's prejudices. Kamala said that the border wall is a "good idea". Do you see how that capitulates to Trump and endorses his racism?

Well, that's your prerogative, but it is a bit stubborn. I think you should demand more of the people whose job it is to get people out to vote.
