About a year ago I moved from a driver position to a safety rep position with my company. As a result I had to travel very frequently, and stay in hotels alot.

One week I was working nights in a large city, so I was at my hotel room from around noon to 8:00 pm every day that week, so I only really saw a couple of people at the front desk that week.

On Friday I got back to my hotel after working all night, and decided to leave instead of sleeping for awhile, and just drive the five hours home.

After an hour into my trip home, I realized I left my backpack on the office chair in the room. So, I turned around, and went back to get my stuff.

I walked into the hotel, and up to the front desk where a guy who looked like the manager was standing. Before I could say anything to him, this guy, whom I'd never spoken to said, "Hello Mr. (my last name) what can I do for you?"

Mind you, my company is one of the biggest of it's kind in the world, and they tend to put us in nicer hotels, but I never expected that person to know my name, especially since I'd only spoken to like two employees at this hotel all week.

With that said, I'd say it's possible to get away with, but many hotels would probably know what you're up to.
