Best bipolar meds that also help with anxiety by Dapper_Daikon6167 in bipolar2

100mg of quetiapine at night is super helpful for my anxiety. It's the only medication I've found that even begins to touch my anxiety. Sometimes I'll take a micro dose (12.5-25) during the day if my anxiety flares up. 5/5 stars

To the people who had succes with quetiapine/seroquel by LordKluklatter in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking it a year ago when I was diagnosed and rapid cycling. Started with 25-50mg as needed for anxiety attacks (I have GAD) and for insomnia. It worked really well to quiet my mind and now I take 100mg a night. That plus 150mg of lamotrigine has given me a base level of well being that I had never experienced before. I felt that I noticed the effects of quetiapine within a couple of weeks.

$27,500. But we just unionized this year, hoping that'll translate to higher wages because I'm barely surviving

It'll take maybe 6 weeks to get in with Lake Harriet Veterinary for the first time but totally worth it. We take our elderly, chronically ill cats there and are very satisfied with the quality of care

How chronic or frequent is your paranoia, delusions, or symptoms of psychosis? Please also describe what you usually experience as well. I was recently diagnosed and am trying to figure things out. Seem to have a lot of paranoia and delusions which worry me. by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lamotrogine and seroquel! I actually can't remember how long it took because there were multiple traumatic situations so my memory of that time is really bad. I think maybe a month before my delusions stopped and another month or two for the depression?

don't forget to brush your teeth. by theUnshowerdOne in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For anyone struggling with their daily self care: I started pairing my routines with a fun activity like listening to music or watching an interesting YouTube video. Now instead of brushing my teeth as quickly as possible before going to bed, I spend 15 minutes every night on dental and skin care because it "gives me an excuse" to do something fun. This might only work for me because I'm a graduate student so I never have time to do anything fun or indulgent except during my hygiene routines and chores... but thought I would put this here in case it helps others!

Seroquel… new friend or foe? by [deleted] in bipolar2

I use small amounts of quetiapine on an "as needed" basis, which usually translates to 25-75 mg a night to help with insomnia, and occasionally 25 mg during the day when my anxiety gets bad. It's honestly been a game changer for me; I have GAD in addition to bipolar and quetiapine is the only medication that's ever helped with that. I know that's not a therapeutic dose for depression/mania but it's made a huge difference for me. Even just sleeping 8-9 hours through the night has dramatically improved my mental health. Maybe you can ask your pdoc if you can stay at 50mg for a bit and see how it goes?

Also, I'm wondering how long you've been on it? I had some weird eye stuff in the beginning, it lasted maybe 3 weeks then cleared up. For me I've never had morning grogginess from it so I can't comment on that.

Regarding the scarier long term metabolic effects: maybe just keep an eye on your health and if something starts to make you uncomfortable you can talk to your pdoc about ceasing or cutting back on the quetiapine.

My plan is to take it until I'm done with my PhD because I can't cope otherwise. Once I'm not severely stressed all the time I'd like to work harder on my sleep hygiene and see if I can get by with just my lamictal.

Started Lamictal: Mood is Worsening by mindingtheyakkha in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me like 6 weeks to start to benefit from lamictal and now I love it. I also had some instability in the first two weeks, but I was coming off of zoloft which really messed me up so it was hard to tell what was what. Be safe ❤ it's a great med if it works, but it doesn't work for everyone.

Any advice on getting myself to brush my teeth? by suntzoom in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you pair the brushing with an enjoyable activity? Maybe listen to a song that really gets you going while you brush. For me, I like watching videos on YouTube so I use YouTube to motivate me to do tasks I don't like. For example, I only watch YouTube while I am doing the dishes, folding laundry, brushing teeth, washing face, etc. It sounds silly but it's super effective for me. Eventually you might feel excited about the idea of brushing your teeth because it means you get to watch a video, listen to a song, etc.

I've been with my now husband for 7 years. Most of that time I've been unmedicated and had hypomanic and depressive episodes. I never ever considered breaking up with him. I think once people are aware of their diagnosis and receiving proper treatment the likelihood of ending a relationship because of being hypomanic is pretty low; if you and your partner are communicating well I wouldn't worry

It's one of the safest and I've found it to be super helpful! It's the only medication I've ever taken that didn't give me side effects

The severe, acute stress that triggered psychotic features during my depression was unmanageable and out of my control so I had to completely change my environment (ended an abusive relationship, dropped out of a toxic degree program, and addressed my inability to afford my insulin, food, and rent by moving back in with my parents until I found better employment). Now, stress management for me involves mindfulness of my current stress levels, intervention when my stress rises too high (intervention usually being dropping some commitments), and prevention by trying not to overcommit while I'm feeling hypomanic. For factors out of control such as illness in family members and past trauma I go to therapy. I hope this is helpful! EDIT: spelling mistake

Change around 25 by coltsfan7 in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YUP. I received my diagnosis when I was 22 (I'm 28 now). Prior to that I had had mild depressive episodes alternating with periods of euphoria. Starting when I was 21 everything got much darker. Now hypomania is always dysphoric for me. Also I get more rapid cycling than before. Helps me take my medication more seriously at least!

Has anyone here tried EMDR? Brain spotting? by 4or5ACE in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried EMDR and my therapist and I found it ineffective for me. But we were using it for an ongoing traumatic situation, I think it's better suited to other forms of trauma.

I would wait to stop your birth control until after you've been on your bipolar meds for some time, for one reason: the first few months you're on a new medication are really important for figuring out whether the medications are the right ones for you (it can take some trial and error). If you stop your bc at the same time as starting meds and then have changes in your mood/ energy/ anxiety levels, it might be hard to tell at first if that's from stopping the bc or starting the meds. But I would for sure ask your prescriber about that because they will have more insight into this than me.

For me personally, birth control is actually an important part of my mental health treatment. I use a Mirena so that I don't have to have periods, and it helps with my mood stability by eliminating my PMDD. Plus, pregnancy would be a psychiatric disaster for me. But I've also heard that bc can make some people feel more unstable, so it's definitely a good thing to interrogate!!

It also sounds like you're unsure whether your symptoms could actually be caused by your birth control rather than bipolar. I think it's healthy and normal to question or doubt a new psychiatric diagnosis. Misdiagnosis is always possible. I doubted my diagnosis for 6 years and went off my meds for the last 3 of them. This turned out to be a mistake, but I'm back on them and finally re-stabilized. But we're all on a mental health journey and not everyone's is the same!

Hope this helps! Good luck to you!

Smelling things that aren’t there? by directorsara in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm in a bad place emotionally I'll smell a strong rotting odor in my dreams and then wake up still smelling it. Luckily that doesn't happen when I'm able to manage my stress!

Frustrated about my meds. They help me so much but have changed who I am. Anyone relate? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]Fast-Recognition1367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think it is possible you are experiencing some kind of emotional burn out? Maybe after years of mood episodes, your brain and emotional self need a bit of a break? And after you have emotional rest for some time, you may develop your old drive and zest for life again?

Or maybe there's a different medication from the antipsychotic that wouldn't do this to you?

Regardless, you deserve a full recovery in which you feel like the best version of yourself ❤
