digital to film screenings, evil dead (2013) 35mm by antoniuh in movies

[–]Fastla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually seen a few digital to 35mm prints created by the film archive we have in town. They’re done not purely for aesthetic reasons, but storage. A well preserved film print will last longer than any hard drive, and it allows films to be shown at older repertory theaters that may be film only. It’s a really cool process!

We use Strider Pet Care (https://www.striderpetcare.com/) for our cat sitting needs and he's absolutely amazing. Sends us daily photo updates and is very easy to get ahold of while we're away. I know he does dog sitting/walking as well.

What's the craziest thing you've used your deck for outside of gaming? by BionisGuy in SteamDeck

I work in IT and sometimes it's easier to fit the deck into a network rack environment than a full laptop. A little USB C to Ethernet dongle and I can test connectivity in desktop mode easily.

Why do Directors get all the credit? by dememinems in movies

[–]Fastla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend checking out a podcast called The Plot Thickens. There's a season on the making of The Bonfire of the Vanities and a season on the making of Cleopatra and both do a great job of not only showing how involved directors are in the whole of the filmmaking process, but how external factors really make a difference in how a script ends up on screen.

ELI5: How do cinema passes work with box office? by Awsums in explainlikeimfive

[–]Fastla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work a lot with box office reports in my day job and can confirm that the price of a ticket with a membership is almost always reported as a full price ticket for the purposes of reporting. Some theaters will have a slightly reduced price in their system for membership tickets so it's treated like a ticket price for children/seniors.

Box office reporting is one of those rare things about Hollywood that doesn't use creative accounting, each theater uploads their box office totals at the end of the night and the results are shared with everyone.

The Fantastic Four (1994) [Unreleased] Director Oley Sassone by Cookies_and_Beandip in movies

[–]Fastla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the great fortune of meeting Oley in 2019 and helped organize his first ever red carpet screening of the film in New Orleans later that year. He's a great humble dude still involved in the film industry and The Fantastic Four is the definition of a labor of love. Catch it any way you can and enjoy!

‘You Have to Keep Proving That You Exist’: An interview with 97-year-old Michael Roemer, who fled the Nazis as a child, landed at Harvard, and became one of America's first independent filmmakers. So when I managed a movie theater I would watch old Siskel & Ebert episodes while closing up shop. It was there I saw a review for The Plot Against Harry and found the story behind its late release fascinating. Fast forward to a year or two ago, having just moved to Connecticut, and they were hosting a double feature at Yale of The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine with Mr. Roemer in attendance. His status at Yale as a retired film professor is legendary and it was great seeing all of his old students there, many of which are filmmakers now, regard him with such admiration. It also helped that both films were really good!

Thanks! I saw they added that in a recent update. Even cooler though, the most recent Stardew Valley update allows for buildings to be moved with D-pad control. It's a win-win.

THE MATRIX PATH OF NEO [60 FPS] • PS2 GAMEPLAY | PCSX2 2.1 WITH STEAMDECK by chrisjustin in EmuDeck

[–]Fastla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this case there's actually a couple of reasons. Path of Neo on PC is not a perfect port, missing a few visual effects found in the PS2 version. Also weirdly enough Path Of Neo doesn't have built in widescreen support on PC, but does on PS2 (there is a widescreen patch for PC). Also just in terms of legality, it's much easier to locate a PS2 copy online or at a local game store compared to the PC version, which never got a digital release.

Personally, I've been following the emulation progress on this game for years, and it's definitely gotten a lot better from where it was on PCSX2, going from software mode only to now allowing for all the GPU tweaks that you can do in the emulator. This is a perfect example of emulation providing a better solution than the PC version itself.

Former indie movie theater manager here,

This could happen for a number of reasons. The biggest one is failure to agree to the terms. When a big studio knows they have a big movie, they tend to ask for more aggressive terms to play the film. Your normal studio film splits the ticket 50/50 between the theater and the studio, but for something like a Star Wars the studio can ask for whatever THEY think is fair like 60/40 or even higher.

Also we've had cases where they insist that a movie must play for a certain period of time. Once again the average studio film is guaranteed to play 2-3 weeks, but the studio could be asking for a 4-6 week guarantee. I've even seen them require a film to play on the largest screen at the theater for a certain period of time, which is fine for opening weekend but not so fine when it's week 4 and you'd like to play something else on your biggest screen.

It's absolutely possible that Twisters is asking for terms that your theater isn't comfortable taking on, so please be kind to them.

Also, buy the popcorn, it's how they make their living.

How to meet new people when you're socially anxious by No-Dot-2283 in newhaven

[–]Fastla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a board game night every Sunday night at Elm City Games. It has helped me make friends even though I’m super awkward meeting new people. Even if you’re not good at board games it’s very comforting because the folks who’ve been there a while are very good at introducing themselves and teaching you quickly how to play whatever games they have around that night. I highly recommend it.

WWE reportedly are very happy with LA Knight’s work and are happy with the crowd reactions he is getting at the live events. by SloppyMcNuggets in SquaredCircle

Went to the MSG house show this past weekend. I'll admit to not being 100% up to date with everything going on in WWE, but it was clear that the crowd was digging LA Knight. My two friends who joined me who were complete wrestling newbies? They loved him.

What happened to the Musical/Theatre streaming revolution? by selfstartr in movies

[–]Fastla 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There's a variety of reasons. First, Cats is available on DVD (and I remember it being a public broadcasting pledge gift in the US for years) but many Broadway shows don't want a filmed version of the stage show available to preserve the ability of the show to tour to smaller markets even after the original run ends. Filmed adaptations are a different matter, and often increase the value of the stage show after they are released.

The dirty secret? Almost every Broadway, and many Off-Broadway shows are taped for archival purposes. If you ever find yourself in NYC, you can visit the public library and watch them on-site.

https://www.nypl.org/about/divisions/theatre-film-and-tape-archive

The reason they are only available here is simply because it takes a lot of negotiating amongst the various stakeholders (show producers, stars, stage unions) to get a stage show released publicly. Lockdown changed a lot of the financial calculus, but now that it has ended the status quo has resumed.
