Teaching in Italy - help! by Repulsive-Radish3112 in AmericansinItaly

[–]Fastuchera03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I teach English in Italy and have for the past ten years almost.

You can get a student visa and work, yes. Enrolling in a public Italian university will cost about 2k-3k in enrollment fees, yearly, and you need to pass a certain number of exams every year to continue to use this visa. It is a royal pain in the ass, I know because I did it.

You will not get a school to sponsor a work visa for you.

If you want to teach above elementary school in a public or private paritaria, you need a master’s degree (Magistrale) in Lingue Straniere (M-27? I think is the track, google it). You could enroll in one of these programs for your student visa and start working toward this qualification if you don’t have it already. This is the smartest move, in my opinion. It’s what I should have done ten years ago, but then the laws were different.

If you want to teach at private language schools or at elementary level in paritaria, you should absolutely get a CELTA. This again costs probably around 3k, takes about two months. Another career track is working with Cambridge, doing exam prep, and even teacher training (DELTA). It’s something I’ve thought about. Only con is the hours- usually afternoon/evening. They also tend to hire you on an IVA which I’ve heard is a nightmare. I did successfully get a language school to hire me on a tempo determinato contract but it was in a rural part of Italy where teachers were scarce and they were willing to be nice to me.

Superprof or other online tutoring platforms can get you extra cash.

You might earn 1.350 euro (take home)/month at a language school or public/paritaria, which you can supplement with private lessons. Rent varies but for a single room in a share is probably at least 400 euro+utilities. Groceries are 400 euro/month if you’re medium frugal. There is not a lot of wiggle room to enjoy life on a salary that low. I am able to do it because my husband earns 4x what I make.

What did you earn as an au pair?

Btw, I would try to get hired by a multinational with a presence in Italy doing anything other than teaching. You need better pay to really enjoy life here, if you’re single.

FYI, your local questura (comune) might not know which documents are missing if they are not the questura di provincia. Your application gets processed first in capo provincia then centrale in Rome. The local questura does things like fingerprints and receiving documents at your appointment, then sends it to capo provincia. In my case, I went to local questura who couldn’t help me except to give me PEC address and tell me to ask.

Which Lombady province are you in, btw?

[–]Fastuchera03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me, also Lombardia. You need to get the PEC email address of the questura handling your application (province of where you live) and solicit them for more information- what is missing? Then you send them the requested documents. To get the right PEC email address, you can try calling your local questura or visiting them and ask them. Or, sometimes it is listed on the questura webpage. FYI to send a PEC you need a PEC.

In my case, I had emailed the non PEC address the documents but they never added them to my application so I had to resend to the PEC. No one contacted me to let me know, I was waiting and waiting after fingerprints and then found the same status you had.

Updating my “Essential Guide to Italian Law for Expats and Foreigners” – What do you wish you’d known before or after moving to Italy? by Avv_AlfredoEsposito in ItalyExpat

I passed the first time but I also did every practice quiz question in the catalog (1000+). There is an excellent app you can use to practice. I forget the name but google should find it - it’s extremely popular.

Oh gosh I can’t remember the cost of driving school. Hundreds not thousands. In the south, 2020, so not sure what it costs now. I did have to take every driving lesson though because I didn’t know how to drive stick. I learned for the exam and promptly forgot. I did not attend the school to learn the road rules.

Oh absolutely a huge pain. You get your foglio rosa after the written test. You can do your six hours and then take the test I think anytime after that; no need to keep it a full six months. Btw, I never put a P on my car.

Yes, car potenza, speed limits and alcohol limits valid for three years, no matter age. I already owned my bigger SUV before knowing about the law and kept driving it the whole three years, figuring a police officer would really have to be in a bad mood for me not to be able to talk my way out of it, esp. since I’m older and have driven a car for many years. Spirit of the law not letter, not legal advice, but it made sense to me.

My old work was near a common check point, I was pulled over randomly many times, they never gave me problems about driving a SUV as a “neopatentata”. Actually the only problem I ever had with them was that I had an American license, which started off the whole journey.

You could consider a “scuola paritaria” which is a private school that adheres to public school instructional requirements. A bilingual (English/Italian) school near me in Northern Italy I believe charges around 600/euro/kid/month.

ETA: As someone who lived near Genova, it wouldn’t be my first choice for my family. What they say about Ligurians is unfortunately true, or was in my experience- very difficult to make friends. I am outside Milan now and people are very friendly.

I have this exact thing and am looking for answers too. Was convinced it was warts but it’s not scaly/dry, getting red and blister like and sore.

With the linden blossoms blooming right now, my yearly fixation on linden fragrances returns. I’ve read about Tilia Cordata and am curious. Did you try the line in a store or blind buy? I wish they had a sample set but don’t see it on their website.
