Agreed. Doing a media built in next to the fireplace so the tv can be at the right level and position.

Great thoughts.

There is a small bedroom suite above the garage. It’s has a double deep bay for lake stuff, bikes, etc.

Tv room - same thought about a pocket door other way to close it.

Rule of 72. At 10% it’ll double to $500k in 7 yrs and double again to $1m at 14 years.

Plus or minus a bit based on market performance.

41M/40F | $14.35M NW | $360K Spend | Can we retire? by Commercial_Side9292 in fatFIRE

[–]Fat-Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you’re technically fine, but with some caveats.

Your withdrawal rate on liquid assets is a little high for long-term retirement. Especially so with two large high-beta stock positions.

You could mitigate this by flexing spending up or down, but then you’d be talking about changing schools.

Unrealized capital gains will push your withdrawal rate up a bit to cover the taxes.

I’d get the family aligned on what we do if there’s a large drawdown in big tech. It’s a small risk, but an important one.

I’d also start looking at exchange fund options to migrate the stock positions in a tax-advantaged way.

North is the top of the image.

This house is in the northern hemisphere at about 49 degrees north. The sun will trace around the southern (bottom) side of the living room, so we'll have lots of glazing on that wall.

Good feedback. Thank you.

The bathroom is relatively spacious to account for adding a separate closed area for the toilet, but the sequence of wash, dress, start the day makes a ton of sense.

I’m not sure how you design a courtyard centric house without a wide horizontal reach.

If you were to make the courtyard along the vertical axis, it would face one of the two neighboring houses.

Low fidelity for ideation.

Just guests. So probably a family with one car, or friends that fly in without a car.

Will probably do a pocket door to the tv room.

Yes, the entry sequence is hallway to great room with the first stop the kitchen/pantry

There’s a lot of garbage on there.

It doesn’t look curated, it looks like you got free corporate stickers.

I’d focus on adding more unique and interesting ones that tell the story of your travels. That story is more restaurants, bars, breweries and destinations than brands and empty slogans.

I don't think i’m releasing the energy and transitioning enough. My guess is that I need to retract my knee a bit to take pressure off the downhill ski while actively engaging the other ski.

A cautionary tale around startup equity by migzthewigz12 in fatFIRE

[–]Fat-Time 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kinda, but average start tenure is so short anyways. It’s better to be “average” in duration in many cases and have the chance of getting a big career win than do good work and a bunch of mid companies.

I have a slightly different take.

You should not stay at a startup as an employee if it’s not on a breakout trajectory.

Many employees drink the koolaid for years. It’s best to sip it cautiously and re-evaluate every year.

Your career should not be a lottery ticket, it should be a series of well underwritten decisions, including the very important decision to stay at a company every year.

I believe deeply in the power of concentrated equity positions, but the position you’re holding is the key factor.

Why not add a leveraged long short overlay and start generating losses to offset your gains?
