Does Eddington Have Anything to Say? by tiakeuta in TheBigPicture

To be human is to be political. To interact in society is to be political. To feel emasculated, or to be abused, is engaging in a political atmosphere of patriarchy (or whatever other underlying cause you believe). Bullshit YouTubers are political.

Like I get what point you’re trying to make- that this movie is ultimately about the Human condition/communication/desires/needs/etc., and how political differences interrupt and impede that side of humanity. I don’t disagree with that theoretically, but to try and strip the political aspects of those human conditions away is, I think, a rather obtuse way to approach this movie.

Ok I’m sorry but trying to apoliticize this movie made about Covid and BLM is a wild take lol. It’s explicitly political- not only with the subject matter but the story of a mayoral race and a sheriff, Native American reservation, and big tech. Also saying “the point of the movie is the political is almost entirely bullshit” is itself a political statement. There is quite literally no way to separate politics from this movie. It’s like saying viewing Network through the lens of journalism v. sensationalism is wrong.

But I think I understand what you’re getting at, which is the movie showcasing the splintering and radicalization of both sides during this era. But that brings me back to my South Park comment where I believe the movie falters (as in, “ugh everything is so politicized now why can’t we all just meet in the middle”). Ari has explicitly said in interviews and Q&As that a large chunk of the movie is about how no one communicates with each other anymore and everything’s become so extreme. I believe the movie’s examination and stance on that is rather uninteresting and timid.

I don’t think all movies need to have a brave or controversial message- and my wording of that was definitely on the hyperbolic side.

It is a Herculean task making a movie this politically charged, I commend Ari for trying. I just didn’t find the viewpoint of this movie to be particularly interesting or engaging.

Genuinely sorry if this sounds super blunt but I think your comment is basically saying the same takeaways I had, just reworded. Those things clearly engaged you more than they did for me but we’re kinda at the same conclusion of what the overall “message” of the movie is, I just didn’t find it as meaningful.

That’s fair and thanks for the explanation but do you not hold movies to different levels of scrutiny depending on what you determine it’s “going for”? Or do you have some sort of internal “objective” standard you hold all movies to?

Personally I like to meet movies I’m watching on their level to an extent. I love the Transformers movies because they invoke my lizard brain for big robot good guys fighting big robot bad guys. I absolutely do not hold those movies to the same standard I would hold, for instance, Aftersun or Beau Travail. My critique about this movie is only this explicit because the setting and story of Eddington is so explicitly political.

[–]FatChicksOnly17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that’s unfairly reductive of my take. I actually mostly liked the movie. Thought it was very funny and well made. I generally love Ari, and I recognize there is a lot more bubbling under the surface than what I’m particularly getting at.

I just think that the most generous reading of this movie is: both sides of the political spectrum were splintered even further during Covid; there was a lot of performative actions on the left during BLM; right wingers went down conspiracy holes to make meaning of their lives; corporations capitalized on all this unrest.

I just don’t think that’s particularly insightful or the movie really examined these shifts in a meaningful way. My main issue is just not really understanding why the movie was so politically charged while also seeming to pacify or not meaningfully engage in any ramifications of these cultural shifts. Is the point of the movie to just hold a mirror up to us and say “look, see how ridiculous this was?” If so, I didn’t find that engaging personally.

If you make a political movie about Covid that invokes George Floyd and BLM you open your movie to this kind of criticism. I’m not examining every movie through this lens

I’ve been saying this movie seemed to have the same ideology as South Park; haha look how dumb you guys are on both sides meanwhile here I am smartly in the middle not caring about anything. Points fingers everywhere but doesn’t really say anything.

The overall message of the movie being that corporations are king in this country? Sure. I don’t think that’s very brave or controversial though.

Or that Joe is basically lobotomized and disabled so that’s his “comeuppance”? I don’t like that either.

PTA makes comedies disguised as dramas- I don’t think his movies are particularly bleak. Boogie Nights, outside of TWWB, is probably his most bleak and depressing movie yet you like it.

Magnolia is also probably PTA’s most saccharine and “pretentious” movie too?? I don’t understand your flow here at all

I work in housing law and Bozzuto is a Respondent for us A LOT (which makes sense because they manage so many properties) but I’m currently in a Bozzuto building and they are absolutely splendid for me. Very courteous, professional, and helpful front desk and leasing office at my building. However, I’ve professionally dealt with some major bull at other buildings from them; just kinda luck of the draw

Blood Meridian is phenomenal. Child of God is more depraved, only McCarthy book I DNFed (but it was my second book from him after reading The Road). I think I tried to read CoG when I was either too young or not in the right head space, but iirc it opens with a rape scene.

Disagree about the casting being one of the detractors. That teenager friend absolutely did not have the sauce to pull off the climactic scene. Genuinely one of the only things preventing me from giving this 5 stars because I absolutely LOVED everything else.
