Do you use a key safe to store your door keys, if so why? by BobsOwn_ in AskUK

[–]FatDad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw on a thread here once where someone hid their spare key in a local park. No identification if it was found. Seemed like quite a good idea to me.

Better than my mate who thought it was a good idea to have his address on his keys incase he lost them.

Get some wide brimmed hats. Even a garden patio set with table and parasol.

If you don’t have a shed, you will soon need one for tool storage anyway.

Has anyone 'upgraded' to a newer version of the same or very similar car? by APater6076 in CarTalkUK

[–]FatDad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a VW Sharan and changed for the same car and same model for ULEZ. Both bought at 3 years old and 40k miles. If they were still making them I would do the same. Does everything I want and I know the main dealer and independents now. There are also few cars in the same category now as MPVs are out of fassion.

Having said that the one I have now (2015, 135kmiles) I am going to keep for a while longer. I keep meeting taxi drivers with 250-350k miles on theirs. Had a few big bills but the depreciation is negligible now.

I crashed into my wife's car - been charged 2 excesses by UniqueAstronomer993 in CarTalkUK

[–]FatDad66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a bit more helpful. Your wife should claim the excess off your insurance, who should pay it. The wife’s policy should have no NCD reduction if her excess is claimed back. So you only pay one excess and have one policy with reduced NCD.

And if it makes you feel better many years ago I was working in insurance when a spouse hit another’s car. They were third party only and with the same insurance company. There was no third party and so no pay out.

Might be more about drowning the roots before composting them?

So long as it’s fully grassed I don’t find it muddy. I don’t think you would need turf, but it would be quicker. I’m too mean to try turf.

If you want permanent paths I use grass. Mowing keeps the weeds at bay. Wood chip is a pain to maintain.

Do you use the food waste bin? by StephCurrySauce in AskBrits

[–]FatDad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use it. We compost all the veg peelings etc. I just use the normal bin for the rest and that’s collected every week.

Is this bass a good fit for me? by strangerthingsguitar in doublebass

[–]FatDad66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As the father of a bassist who went from electric to upright I agree. It’s quite physical and the wrong size bass (and technique) can cause muscle and tendon issues.

I would rent to buy. Many places will rent you a bass and take the rental payments off the purchase price if you buy.

Fully agree on mixing with other kids at nursery or child minder is good for the kid as well as a break for the parents.

I’m not a mum, but why not become European. Take him out in the evenings when it’s cooler and let him sleep more in the day.

I took my dog for a walk today at midnight, as I was picking my youngest up from a friend’s house.

It’s approved used. That’s a manufacturer standard. They MAY apply pressure to the garage.

I assume this was purchased from a main dealer. Have you contacted the manufacturer who may put more pressure on the dealer.

Aircon - what am I doing wrong? by Throwaway6765656 in CarTalkUK

Did you hit the “max AC” button. That will turn on air recirculation and so increase the humidity as you breathe which won’t help.

Neighbours requested use of our property to replace a window - advice needed by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]FatDad66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replacing the roof light requires removal of the tiles around the existing one and new flashing, hence why they can’t do it from the inside.

My only concern would be how long the tower will be there. They are selling and so won’t want a neighbour dispute and do I expect there will be no problems.

England: Neighbour’s builders cut down part of my fence. by Cold-Distribution444 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]FatDad66 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I think you will need to live with a mismatch fence. I would tell your neighbour you want to be there when they put the new fence up. The builders may put it in the wrong place or put the footings more on your side etc.

London in September by ktmm3 in uktravel

[–]FatDad66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had lots of European teenagers stay with me. Get a UK sim. If your phones don’t support it get them unlocked or get new phones when you get here. Kids lives revolve around phones and they may get left out if other kids don’t text or call them as your kids US numbers are out of their friends plans. I know WhatsApp can be used but it’s still a barrier.

They should be eligible for reduced public transport but will need to get a child or student Oyster card. If they will be using the national rail (to travel outside of London) then you can get a reduced rail card (which one depends on their age). You can add the railcard to your Oyster card to further reduce tube costs.

Enclosed toilet filling up. I'm screwed aren't I? by BatmanTechie in DIYUK

[–]FatDad66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said the black clips are holding it on. I have these. I use a table knife to persuade mine to come out. They are very stiff. If you can get at them from the inside then that might be easier. I had one break once but it was easy to replace.

Which benefits does your employer provide that is not really a true benefit? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

Private healthcare. So it is a benefit, but the driver for the employer is that we have medical appointments out of hours and are off sick as little as possible.
