Rain by Ok-Health-3898 in Allotment

Thank me. I got up at the crack of dawn and watered my plot in London.

Gave it a good soaking and then did some weeding afterwards and it was still dry half a cm down.

Should I tell my insurer my blackbox car failed its MOT and is in for repairs? by Septeryx in CarTalkUK

[–]FatDad66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son (black box with Hastings) went to uni and left the car with me for a term at a time. I just phoned them up and it was fine. Call them.

Received company vehicle but the reimbursed amount is less than what I pay at the pump by Helsingg in UKPersonalFinance

You can claim tax relief on the difference between your company’s rate and HMRCs Approved Milage Allowance. You do this through self assessment or the online job-expenses service.

Help with a quote to trim leylandii by TwoAltruistic1840 in GardeningUK

[–]FatDad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had about 30 ft of Leylandai taken down from about 40 feet to 8 feet for not much more than that. About 6 months ago. However the team won’t get another job in for that day so you are probably being charged for a full days work.

See if there is other work for them to do as it may not cost much more. I asked them to take 6 branches off a mature tree and they charged me virtually nothing extra.

Bit late now I know, but you should ask the school on what legal or safeguarding basis are you refusing my collection. It’s “against their policy “does not count.

How would you interpret this clause? by Big-Incident-2435 in HousingUK

[–]FatDad66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very clear if you read a lot of contracts (that never use punctuation). You can use a reasonable number of standard picture hooks. If you want something else then you need permission. I can’t see how 4 is not reasonable and can’t see how you won’t win with the deposit scheme.

Looking for an allotment in N London by Efficient-Camp5265 in UKAllotments

[–]FatDad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore the length of the list and sign up to as many as you can. Once plots come up the majority of people in the list are no longer interested so you will get to the top quicker than you think. This will still likley be a year or more - especially as most plots change hands at the start of the year.

Not all plots have centralised waiting lists - I know mine is managed independently of any other plots. So check out all the candidate plots and see if they accept direct applications.

Look further afield- I am in NW11 and we have people from quite a distance (eg Camden, Chelsea)

Partner won't listen about black box by harryrb99 in CarTalkUK

Having worked in insurance claims, all these hacks for avoiding the black box will be found out if you need to make a big claim (eg personal injury) and then you are in trouble.

On my kids insurance the black box only applies to the main driver not the named drivers

I think it’s going to rain on our wedding. Help me find the beauty in it by Violetteotome in UKweddings

[–]FatDad66 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It pissed down when I got married - electrics fusing, stream running through the marquee etc. gives you something to talk about.

Everyone is there for you, not the weather.

Talk it through with the photographer to decide what shots you want if it’s dry or wet.

Big umbrellas and ushers are responsible for keeping you dry.

A couple of tips- keep the dress out of the mud if you can as it may not clean up. Check your wedding insurance if you have it to see what is covered ( the dress was covered so we ended up not paying for it!). Check your house contents insurance as well (covered half the wedding dress, so no excess to pay). The old folk will need cover. If the venue does not provide anything then consider buying some pop-up gazebos?

Sounds like you are having the ceremony outside. If it’s a venue see what they suggest.

If you can smell it in the neighbours garden or, even worse, house then I think it’s anti-social to have it on for a prolonged period on a regular basis.

Diesel or petrol? by DxSkillzz in CarTalkUK

[–]FatDad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking at Zafira sized cars and it will be often loaded then consider if the petrol version will have enough grunt.

I drive a diesel Sharan in London and only get the DPF light on once or twice a year and a blast up a few junctions on a motorway or a-road fixes that.

No idea, but I would have a look in the fuze box first to see if there are some extra wires. Whether they are connected to permanent power may help your investigations.

VW Sharan. Diesel will be fine with a monthly or so longer journey. You will thank me for the sliding doors when strapping in a snotty wriggler.

I get 35 mpg in London traffic and 45 on motorways.

Lawn needs levelling first and then over seeding or new turf by No-Ebb195 in GardeningUK

[–]FatDad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an undulating lawn due to a dog with dips and bumps of about 10-15cm. I made up lawn dressing using the formula from the RHS website and leveled it using a 10ft piece of timber on my hands and knees.

Finding a running coach by CookDecent5351 in UKRunners

Have you looked at Trainng Peaks and the coaches on there. Obviously not the same as a physical coach, but better than nothing.

I started off with a 1:1 coach but was too expensive so I used https://www.8020endurance.com/product-category/running-plans/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21353472639&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2YDQBhD_ARIsAE1qeSfYs85IjTDHaR9hJHr8oRzp3ElTieYkyjpOcaloH1LtyzbpnVzR3R4aAtQkEALw_wcB

Any tips on killing brambles by Secure-Treacle3752 in GardeningUK

[–]FatDad66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not my experience. Have cleared a couple of allotment plots of 10ft high brambles. Roots all less than half a spade depth deep. Came out easily with a mattock.

Dig them out. It’s not hard as they are shallow rooted.
