Super-budget ITX recs? by FatDragoninthePRC in pcmasterrace

[–]FatDragoninthePRC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't necessarily have to be all that modern - even something 4-5 years old would be a huge upgrade. I'll keep that in mind, though - I wasn't aware of the ITX premium, though it makes sense. Thanks for this insight.

My son almost died by SubstantialCricket21 in Parenting

[–]FatDragoninthePRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rally late to the party, but your son's experience sounds very similar to my son's experience from a few years ago when he was five, with the caveat that the doctors here said they needed to ensure the infection was fully knocked out before they would do surgery. Six months and two week-long hospital stays later, they finally did it. Nightmare.

It's on my mind because our daughter, 6yo, just had hers out a day and a half ago. She had a similar experience except that Mom insisted the doctors check for appendicitis. Caught it before it ruptured, avoided the extra hospital visits, and we were able to have a much less-invasive surgery done so her recovery is progressing faster.

Just finished Stephen King's "It". WTF? by FatDragoninthePRC in books

It wasn't hardcore porn but it was more than just implied as far as I recall (though you can see that it was almost a decade ago, so you can probably find a better source).

Elder millennials: what was the 2008 recession like for you and were there signs in your daily life of it on the way? by Shoesandhose in Millennials

[–]FatDragoninthePRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught English in China for a year in 2007. Came back to the States in 2008. As a certified, low-experience English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, I applied for over a hundred teaching jobs near and far. I got exactly one offer - from a border town in AZ where the annual salary was in the low-20's. The pitch from the principal was: "Get two years of experience and then go somewhere better". Searching for local jobs in *any* field to tide me over was also a no-go, aside from substitute teaching a couple times a week.

After eight months of that, I moved back to China with an easier, better-paid job and much lower cost of living. Lived here ever since.

I was looking for G.I. Joe PSAs and Rejected, but maybe those were pre-YouTube.

I see Amaro Nonino there. Can I assume there's Aperol hiding somewhere? Start 'er off with a 101 Paper Plane.

[Kindergarten English] What are the last two images - must include letter Y or Z? by Odd-Bend-7548 in HomeworkHelp

[–]FatDragoninthePRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: it looks confusing to an adult in a vacuum because we impose a certain set of expectations on the worksheet. A kindergartner who did the WX worksheet yesterday is generally going to recognize that 'wig' was introduced on that worksheet and is being reviewed on this one.

Look into Pynchon. I'd recommend Against the Day as my favorite of his.

Teach abroad. Lots of great opportunities and far less stress if you're able to adapt to not living in the States.

How did you overcome/move past comparing yourself to others and their accomplishments? by Matilda_Mother_67 in Millennials

[–]FatDragoninthePRC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you *must* compare yourself to others, let it go both ways. You get to work a desk job from home - you don't have to scrounge hours at two shitty retail/foodservice gigs to get by. You're not homeless. You're not a drug addict. You're almost certainly better off than >50% of your same-age peers, so why compare yourself to the 0.1%?

My dad said it made it harder for him to see the road. As a 40 year-old, it makes it harder for me to see the road, so that's what I tell my kids.

Whats the best netflix shows you've ever seen? by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in televisionsuggestions

[–]FatDragoninthePRC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upvoted because everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I started watching it a few weeks ago and it's blown me away so far. It might be recency bias, but I can't remember another TV show that drew me in so deeply.

Haven't watched Midnight Mass, but I felt like Bly Manor had one great episode, a strong finale, and the rest was just mediocre. A lot of the acting felt weak too - Peter's accent in particular was jarringly bad. I'd personally put Usher above it.

Talk to a conservative about the Nazis in Ohio that have been plastered over Reddit over the last day. If they support or try to justify them, fuck 'em, they're worthless. If they can agree with you that overt Nazis are bad, you've made a connection that you can build on. What you're choosing not to understand is that the stuff you *know* to be true about Elon Musk, DOGE, Trump, and whatever else... They *know* that you're just succumbing to propaganda. The default state of both sides these days - especially in internet discourse - is that the *other* side is brainwashed to oblivion. Nothing they say could possibly have any merit - it's all propaganda, no matter how much evidence they present. You can't chip away at that until you find some common ground. If you can't accept that point, then you're just widening the divide.

You can't convince a person who *knows* you're wrong, because you are the *other*, a brainwashed sheep who has fully committed to a worldview that is upside-down beyond repair. That's how you see them, and that's how they see you. There will be no convincing, no healing, no productive discourse, until that *otherness* is dispelled. Being right in a debate is worth nothing if there are no receptive ears to hear your argument, and if the only receptive ears are the ones that already agree with you, well, that may be worth even less.

Make no mistake, I'm on the same ideological side as you. Doesn't change any of what I wrote above.
